Once you've activated the feature via abu Mohammeds screen shots, on your keyboard you will have an Mic icon under the letter 'm' try the icon and see what happens, I've tried it out and it'sa pretty cool feature. ماشاء الله

That's speech to text, the screen shot shows "Text to speech"

I'm assuming that means a certain text can be highlighted and the phone will read it out.

I know there are apps that read pdfs, but I'm trying to do it without the app.

I think that's what the brother is trying to do.

Ok, if you see this link of the app already on the phone, it will explain how you can use the facility.

play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tts

There are other apps on the play store, so just a few searches for " Text to Speech", you may find something that is more suitable for what you want to do.

Hope that helps.

Description

Google Text-to-speech Engine powers applications to read the text on your screen aloud. For example, it can be used by:
Google Play Books to "Read Aloud" your favourite book
Google Translate to speak translations aloud so you can hear the pronunciation of a word
TalkBack and accessibility applications for spoken feedback across your device
... and many other applications in Play Store
To use Google Text-to-speech Engine on your Android device, go to Settings > Language & Input > Text-to-speech output. Select Google Text-to-speech Engine as your preferred engine.

Languages supported: English (United Kingdom), English (United States), French, German, Italian, Korean, Spanish.

Brother Sulaiman, with regards to the phone giving you the task manager, just a little update as I just remembered something.

The home button can be set the way you want it to work with the two/three options available.

I have mine set as:

Double touch = task manager
Long press = Menu (when available)
Swipe up = Google search

For an in-depth task manager that switches all apps of is switches off selected apps, then I use an app called advanced task manager, thus will kill all apps in one go. There are others that you may prefer, but since I hardly use it, I'm not to bothered about it because I don't really see how it affects me in terms of battery life.

Of course the more surfing and usage of the phone means quicker battery loss. That's inevitable!

Yes, for me, when I double tap the the home button, I can clear those 9 web pages/apps in the background.

I activated everything in the settings but still, when I highlight text the option to speak doesn't come about. Maybe if I download another app it'll work.

I have the app advanced task manager (app killer) as well as other essential apps from the non islamic apps thread. It saves me battery life.

Actually, what really happens is that it just clears it from the "co-called" open apps so you can have quick navigation to pass through. To close web pages, you will need to close the page from the internet page by touching the Page symbol (top right corner) and then closing the web pages from there. Remember the phone can have 16 Tabs/pages open simultaneously. That would be better to keep track of and closed.

With regards to the Text to Voice, I've seen a few on the Play store, but these arenot very good, as in you need to copy the text and paste it before it can be read.

I'll try and explore the built-in one and possibly update you.

Brother Sulaiman, as you are aware, this is not something everyone uses or will ever need. However here is 1 app that may do what you are asking for. I'm assuming you want PDFs to be read out to you.

Please read the description, comments and ratings for a better understanding of what the app is capable of doing.

play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hyperionics.avar (Video seems like its what you want)

play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.inoveriasoft.pdf... (Looks rubbish)

Sorry, cant be of further assistance. But I'm glad you like your new toy!

You would need to find best network coverage for your area, before deciding on who to go with....found 'three' to be offering the best deal around the time I was looking.

Brother xs11ax,

Cancel your contract asap. That's way too much.

By a monthly SIM only contract, like Virgin Mobile. They have 12/month, with plenty of minutes, texts and 1gb data, or 15 VIP package (better than full monty) including 0870 numbers. No annual contract. You're already saving money.

Now either continue to use your old phone or buy a budget handset from carphonewarehouse (because it's unlocked to all networks).

Depending on what you are currently using or what you are looking for, you can pick up the nee budget HTC desire 310 from cpwh for 119, 4.7 inch screen or desire 500, bit more dearer. Alternatively, buy an expensive second hand handset with 1 year warranty from "Computer Exchange"

You can get a decent phone for less than 250 and I mean decent.

What is the plan for 18.99?

If you don't need a new phone you may be better off getting a SIM only deal, which works out really cheap especially with you only requiring limited minutes and data.

unimited text
1.5gb data on 4g
18.99 a month. 5 off for the first 6 months

i do need a new phone, but i wont be keeping the s4. i will probably sell it and buy a cheaper phone. i damage phones too easily.

Instead of selling it, you may be worthwhile buying a cheaper handset and going for a SIM only deal?

I think I'm only paying about 13 for one of the SIM only deals....and it's got unlimited data. That's with three though.

It does work out cheaper just buying a phone out right.
