Samsung and Apple may soon unleash sun-stealing smartphones - Solar power could be the next big thing in phones

Both Apple and Samsung look to be beavering away on solar powered smartphones in a bid to stand out from the competition.

That's according to a report from ZDNet Korea, which claims that while Samsung is currently focused on displays, it is 'deeply considering' shifting its focus to developing solar power technology for its smartphones.

Samsung isn't alone in its sun-powered plans either, as the report also states that Apple has recently applied for additional solar charging patents - there's not much more to go on than 'solar panels for iPhones', but that's a pretty big clue.

That would make sense as battery life is the biggest stumbling block still faced by handsets and given Samsung and Apple's current popularity in the phone world they're ideally positioned to make solar power popular.

Second time lucky

Solar powered smartphones aren't a new idea though. Apple filed a patent for just such a technology back in early 2011 and Samsung even released a phone with solar panels on it back in 2009, but so far the technology hasn't really caught on.

It's unlikely that either company is close to bringing the technology to market, but with two of the biggest smartphone companies in the world looking into it solar power could be a common feature of handsets a few years from now, and could really step up battery life, especially when left on standby.

Good Point and very interesting.

BlackBerry at one time were the best for Data downloading as it was safe and did very little. However, the newer BlackBerries are a killer data eater.

As far as I understand, iOS, Windows and Android are all equal in Data traffic.

The apps all use data in the background, and unless your phone is not smart enough to give you the option to stop background data, then you will be a little stuck (mind you, it is very little)

Streaming Videos is where all the Data gets eaten up, so try and use Wifi at all times. Web pages with minimal images etc will take less of your data.

There are plenty of settings you can put into place on certain handsets. (I can olny speak of my own) I can stop YouTube videos from streaming in the background, I can stop apps from doing anything in the background, I have set my app updates to only happen over Wifi (via the app store) etc etc.

So the conclusion is to use WiFi or downgrade to a phone that will not support HTML. :-P

So even Carphonewarehouse are on my side ;-P

Apple's iOS is very limited to what you can do.

Don't forget, you can download other internet search engines which will "supposedly" reduce your data consumption, but its a matter of trial and error.

Europe reaches deal on common mobile phone battery charger

Reuters
19 December 2013 14:34 GMT

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Mobile phone makers will have to provide a standard battery charger that can fit any device, including smart phones, under a provisional deal on a new EU law reached on Thursday.

Provided the outline agreement gets endorsement from the European Parliament and EU member states, it would be implemented in around 2017, EU officials said.

The draft law on radio equipment lays down harmonised rules for radio equipment, including cell phones and modems.

EU lawmakers also agreed on tougher market supervision and to ensure certain products have to be registered before they can be put on the market, in line with a database system already in existence in the United States.

Once finalised, member states will have two years to transpose the regulation into their national law and manufacturers - including Apple Inc and Samsung - will be given an additional year to comply.

A full session of the European Parliament is expected to sign off the law in March, meaning that a standard battery charger should be available some time in 2017.

i think bro i have not made the point clear. I was talking about illegal collection of user data like phone numbers, emails, contacts, tracking people locations, tapping their phones, etc. Recently you must have heard about nsa spying on mobile phones across the world, google, apple, Microsoft confessed of giving them access to their database.

So was asking about the safest OS of the lot in relation to spying??

Then I'm afraid there's no way out.

We are all being tracked.

Every email, every what's app, every text is sent with a location (pin point)

Every call you make, your imei number goes with the phone call.

An example, Qiblah direction! How does the phone know where we are? It knows via the data or GPS. It locates us precisely.

Also, Android users are all followed by Google. Apple is the same. Did you know that the iPhone tracks your precise location every few minutes to make sure your time is correct!

There is no escape from these smartphones.

As long as we are practicing Islam the way we should, then there's nothing to worry about inshaAllah.

Even with a basic phone like a Nokia 1100, the service provider knows exactly where you are when you make or receive a call.

The SIM communicates with the network more than every second asking them if they are receiving a call or not and when they do receive a call, the network tells the SIM that it's about to receive a call (once it's been located) and then the call comes through.

So you aren't safe at all.

Test! put your phone near a speaker and call it, you will find my description of the network and sim in progress, the speaker will sound like it has interference, this is the network locating the SIM and asking it if it's ready to receive a call.

Has any iPhone user noticed that the GPS signal is on, near the clock for no apparent reason. Well that's because it's located where you are and is making sure the time is correct. Yeah right!

Also this drains your battery. There is a way of stopping that, but it doesn't mean you aren't being tracked.

InshaAllah I'll post a link of how to disable the GPS from coming on just to set the time on the iPhone.
