first time round the letter was padlocked ,
as in the letter was put in a box and locked.
and the second time the key was delivered?
the reverse of this method?
1) key was sent
then
2) the letter was sent in a box???

The prince bought a casket with a padlock, the guard took it to the princess.
so the first bit was right
upon receiving the casket the princess did something to the casket without opening it and returned it to the prince, however when she received it for the second time, she could open it, HOW?

ok taalibah, i kindly request you to tell us.
WHEN THE PRINCE SENT THE PADLOCKED CASKET WITH THE GUARD TO THE PRINCESS, IN RETURN THE PRINCESS FASTENED A PADLOCK OF HER OWN ONTO THE CASKET AND TOLD THE GUARD TO RETURN IT TO THE PRINCE. THE PRINCE REMOVED HIS OWN PADLOCK AND HAD THE CASKET SENT BACK TO THE PRINCESS WHO REMOVED HER PADLOCK TO RETRIEVE HER LETTERS.
THIS MODE OF COMMUNICATION CONTINUED UNTIL THE WAR WAS OVER, VERY ROMANTIC EH!!

taalibah, i guessed that the first time round, but felt shy to mention it!! no seriously speaking, that is mind bogling!!!!!!!!!!!!

okay folks this is probably to confuse you even more, i think i rushed the answer:
the prince sent a padlocked casket containing the private letters, but due to mistrusting the guard he couldnt send a key, on the princess receiving the casket placed another padlock of her own and returned it to the prince without a key. hence two padlocks without each other having keys for the others padlock. when the prince received the casket he took his own padlock off and sent back the casket with the princesses padlock still on it, which only she could remove aiding her to retrieve the letters, THEN she placed her replies in the casket placed her padlock on it and sent it to the prince, in return he placed another padlock and returned it to the princess etc. and this method continued.
hope you get it, coz that was hardwork.

This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
