Alhamdulillah, the only guess you've got right so far was, yupp, i'd gone to sleep, anyway your guesses have had me in hysterics, going to give you the giveaway clue:
a devise was used, sorry no invisible inks, or code words or an illiterate guardsman etc.

p.s. i think the next riddle should be who really is GUEST??

How many years ago ?
Couldn't he just have emailed her ? *grins*

No, but seriously... anyway

ok, I have an idea ... He'd stitch it into the inside of the guard's shirt, which obviously would not be removed until he reached his destination ... but then the prince must've trusted his princess sincerely ! *grins super-wide* - wouldn't want another Yusuf(AS)/Zulaikha situation now would we? [somebody tell me off ! I promise I'll edit it if I receive a reprisal]

The theory is that the letter be hidden in something which will be in constant use until the guard reaches the princess - maybe I've got the wrong item (i.e. the shirt)

sorry, no computers or tickling devices.

clue:put it this way by using this method of communication, the princess would not be able to read her letters on the first time of receiving them, only the second time.

the first time there would be no letter in the envelope...this would be to make the guard think that nothing is really being sent so the second time he would actually send a letter...(sounds stupid i know!)...or something like this

it's quite a good guess, but its no where near. ok another clue:

device meaning some sort of equipment, besides the letter being in an envelope, the envelope is again placed in something?

ok, ive just read all this now. here is my stupid guess;

the kingdoms were adjacent (maybe extremely close), so maybe the prince would aim it directly from his room to her room like we fold paper into concord. and send an empty enevlope with the guard to test him.

ok, ban me from this riddle.

sorry, didnt read it all, just skimmed (as usual)
Quote:

This problem was overcome when the prince devised a way of securing the letters that made it impossible for the guard to read the letters before they were delivered.
HOW DID HE DO IT?

maybe he stiched the enevelope? coz then the guard is able to open but not reseal??

sounds good Queenie, but not correct, all the guesses have been quite good considering the lack of information i've given.

so here goes i'm going to give away part of the answer: a lock and key was used, but how bearing in mind the following clue...

first time round the letter was padlocked ,

as in the letter was put in a box and locked.

and the second time the key was delivered?
