NEED HELP WITH THIS MATHS RIDDLE PLZ!

i dont know if this riddle has already been done, but sum1 asked to do it and im completly hopeless. its the one where Sayyidina Ali RA makes the decision at the end. if you know in which kitaab it appears, coz it might be in one of the Sahih, plz let me know. i have today night or push it till 2moro to get the ansa (by arguing that i was given 2 days -and day is meant to be when the sun is out ;) )

ok, so 2 men are going to eat. first man has 5 rotis (bread) and the second man has 3 rotis. a third man cums along and asks if he can join them. the 2 men agree and they eat altogether. wen they all finish, the 3rd man gives them 8 dinaars/dirhams (wich one is correct?) and then leaves.

now, the first man hu had 5 rotis says to the second man : i get 5 dirhams and u get 3 dirhams coz i had 5 rotis and u had 3.

so the second man says: no. we both shared the food, so we should go halves. meaning we both get 4 dirhams each.

so they decide to take the case to Sayyidina Ali karramallaahu wajhuh, and he takes the 8 dirhams, and decides to give the man hu had 5 rotis, 7 dirhams. and then he gives the man hu had 3 rotis, 1 dirham.

so how was this calculation done?

Each man ate 1/3 of 8 rotis

So,

5/8 - 1/3 = the amount of man A's roti given to the guest and

3/8 - 1/3 = the amount of man B's roti given to the guest

Calculating:

5/8 - 1/3 = 15/24* - 8/24* = 7/24

3/8 - 1/3 = 9/24* - 8/24* = 1/24

* Because the two fractions being subtracted have different demoniators (bottom numbers), we have to multiply them to make the denominators the same. It's like saying that 5 pieces of a cake which has been cut into 8 pieces is the same as 15 pieces of a cake which has been cut into 24 pieces. Equivalent fractions.

Thus, the 8 coins were to be shared in the ratio 7:1 between man A and man B, because that is the proportion of the roti each man shared with the guest.

So each bread is eaten by 3 ppl. Hence, each bread divided into 3 pieces

8 Breads x 3 pieces = 24 pieces

Person 1 has 5 breads - 5 breads x 3 pieces = 15 pieces

Person 2 has 3 breads - 3 breads x 3 pieces = 9 pieces (15 pieces + 9 pieces = 24 pieces)

From the 15 pieces (5 breads), Person 1 himself had 8 pieces :: 15 - 8 = 7
From the 9 pieces (3 breads), Person 2 himself had 8 pieces :: 9 - 8 = 1

Person 3 had the remaining 1 piece + 7 pieces = 8 pieces

So the person with 5 breads gets 7 dirhams and the one with 3 breads gets 1 dirham

o my dayz, you brain boxes are extremly fast. i dont think that was a simple riddle, but i guess alhumdulillah thuma alhumdulillah, to Allah The Almighty for creating such cleaver minds.

anyway, so is this riddle quoted in any of the Sahih Sitta-meanin, it must be a hadith or from sumwer for us to know it, and for the person to ask me it. so wer does it come from?
