SIMPLE SCIENCE

We all know a balloon floats up into the sky because it is full of hot air, and because heat rises, yes,( i will pretend you all agreeing with me).

And we all know the hottest place in a room would be the ceiling and the area nearer to the floor is cooler, why? because heat rises, yes.

If we were to fill some sort of vessel, (besides our stomach) the hottest place would be at the top and the water below would be cooler, why? because heat rises, yes.

question :

'WHY THEN DO FISH POND'S FREEZE AT THE TOP AND NOT AT THE BOTTOM,
IF THE BOTTOM IS MEANT TO BE THE COLDEST PLACE?'

For the same reason that a glass of water, when placed in the freezer, freezes from the top first.
The source of cold is the outside. The actual water is warmer than its surroundings, so the front at which it meets the cold, becomes coldest first and thus freezes even before it gets a chance to move according to the natural convection currents of all liquids and gases.
? am I making sense or just waffling ?

my mum's much smarter ! Alhamdulillah

She reminded me that the top of mountains are ice-capped and that the centre of the earth is the hottest. Which proves that even though convection currents move gases and liquids 'hot up, cold down', changes in pressure can counteract this.

Simply, the further down you go into the earth, the hotter it gets and the higher you go up into the earth's atmosphere, the colder it gets.

The earth is not a 'container' as are all the instances initially quoted in the riddle. The atmosphere has a somewhat 'porous' nature, which is why we jump up and down about the polluting gases which create a 'blanket' in the atmosphere thus causing global warming.

I'm definitely typing more than is necessary, I still feel that my first explanation was satisfactory. But I'm curious to know the 'simple' answer.

Maybe some lateral thinking, simple mind will put me out of my complex misery ! ;P Insha Allah

definitely more typing then required and nothing that answers the riddle, however a very good attempt.

p.s. leave your mum alone!!

As Salamu Alaikum,

Is it because the water on the surface has more contact with the outside air temperatures which are cooloer and therefore form ice faster? or.....

is there magma beneath the sea bed which causes warmer temperatures or....

ice floats so if it does form at the bottom will it not rise to the top and settle there nmaking further cooloer temperatures and so increase the formation of ice??

Many guesses here but there probably all wrong!!!

WELL DONE! to user noor, i did say it was a simple riddle shahly:

as water cools it becomes heavier and sinks to the bottom of the pond, when it reaches the temperature of 4 C it is at its heaviest. As the temperature drops below this, the water becomes lighter and slowly rises to the surface. When it reaches a temperature of zero C it is lighter than the water at the bottom of the pond so as it slowly rises to the surface it freezes.

THATS WHAT YOU CALL SIMPLE SCIENCE !
