Had to give it a go cos' i can't resist a riddle.

Liquidise the assets into gold bars. Enclose them in a chest or suchlike.
Drop them down on a very very long chain. Haul them back up and distribute between the heirs.

Or even ... liquidise the assets into standard note currency. Seal in a light watertight container with lots of air in it. Drop it in as requested: it's not the judge's fault that it'll float.

Lastly, if we go on the wordplay angle, the heir is the one who inherits, in this case, that'd be the fish of the sea... in which case, as the judge ruled, the heirs received their share. (slight adaptation of noor's response)

the judge ordered the lawyers to liquidate all assets and to place all the money in a separate bank a/c. He was then told to write a cheque for the full amount addressed to the deceased (the old lady) then have the cheque dropped in the deepest part of the sea's.

however the judge said something more that pleased the inheritors, what is this extra piece of judgment the judge gave that pleased the inheritors?

i'm going to give you the answer, because site admin was more or less the closest with the correct answer:

if the cheque had not been cashed within 30 days, the money would then be divided imediately accordingly between the heirs!
