Is a stable the name of another type of animal i.e 10 horses and 9 of another animal? Probably wrong but worth a try!
i think u may also answer it as:
there are 10 horses and each has his own stable but there are 9 stables. this is because the other horses stable is else where. i.e you didn't specify where the 9 stables were.
or, two of the horses is a siamese twin??
