You are at a train station, and you need to find out from which direction your train will come from, whether from the left side or the right side.

There are two brothers, completely identical twins. However, there is one thing that sets them apart. One always tells the truth, and the other one always lies. They are never seen together, and when one is awake, the other is asleep. One of the brothers is at this train station, and this is the deal...

You need to find out from what direction your train will come from, whether from the left side or the right side, but you have no idea which one of the brothers this guy is, whether it is the one who always lies or the one who always tells the truth. The question is..

Which question must you ask this guy in order to find out from which direction the train will arrive? You can only ask one single question.

What is the question?

As salamu alaikum,

You can ask the brother:

"I heard your twin is meeting you here on the next train from the left - is that true?"

In that case you'd be getting opposite answers.

If the guy is:
Truthful - yes would mean yes, no would mean no
Liar - yes would mean no, no would mean yes

Either way you still wouldn't know what to do coz you don't know which man you're speaking to!

The question has to be one where you get only one type of answer with either men.

Get it??

Ahhh BUT the ques is sly because as u wrote, they NEVER MEET in the same place, so the truthful answer to the question MUST be no.

thus:

LIAR SAYS: Yes - and being a liar would also change the direction of the train's approach if in fact it wasn't from the left.

TRUTHFUL SAYS: No - and being truthful if the train wasn't coming from left he would correct it saying it comes from the right!

I understand what you mean but when the brother answers to "I heard your twin is meeting you here on the next train from the left - is that true?" he might be on about the meeting bit and not the direction...

that is trueish - but if one guy is an 'absolute' liar and the other an 'absolute' truthful person they will refer to both statements. i.e. the liar MUST lie about him meeting his brother and he MUST lie about the direction of the train - if he only lies about the meeting and ignores the direction, then he has become truthful (if it is actually from the left) and hence the whole riddle is messed up!!

I don't know you can try that one... it might work.

But the question itself is wrong and since it's a riddle there can be only one correct answer right?

is it.......

"From which way will your brother say that the train will come?"

so if the answer you get is Left, that means that the train will be coming from the right.

Suppose the brother you asked is the liar. That means the other brother tells the truth. The brother you asked said, "Left." And that's a lie. So the other brother would really have said, "Right." And that's the truth.

It also works the other way. If the brother you asked tells the truth, that means that the other brother would really have said, "Left." But that other brother is the liar, so the direction of the train must be Right.
