The three states of nafs as summarised by Imam Tabari in his Tafsir of Surah Yusuf verse 53: are:

1. Nafs al-Ammara Bissu' (The Soul which Commands)

2. Nafs al-Lawwama (the Soul that Blames)

3. Nafs al-Mutma`inna (the Soul at Peace)

The three states of soul are arranged in rank from the worst to the best.

May we be blessed with a tranquil soul, a believing soul, a soul that is drowned in the love of Allah Ta'ala and His habibullah. Ameen.
