I CANNOT stand Ruh hufza (Rose water)

Oh my days, that makes me feel so sick. It is soooo sweet.

I don't know why I don't like it, maybe because as a kid, Barelwis used to give us rose petals to eat from Dargahs (Tombs of pious dead people) yuk!

Then again, a tiny piece of rose Turkish delight might be okay and I stress, MIGHT! :(

I really like chikoo as well, but expensive and hard to come by in the UK.

I bought a big bag of chikoo in Pakistan and ate them all the same day. (I was young and could eat anything put before me.) That night and the next couple of days I spent most of my time in the bathroom. I learnt a life lesson that day lol.

It's not a flavour enjoyed by western palates, but it's not too bad with milk.

First time I tried it was in Raiwind markaz. They had a cooler with ruh hafza mixed with water in the foreigners section. After a long dry journey it was ok.

Mirza Ghalib and Mangoes

Mirza Ghalib was the famous poet of India, Bahadur Shah Zafar was the last (Muslim) King of India. Mirza Ghalib loved Mangoes and Bahadur Shah Zafar hated Mangoes.

One day, both were walking in Delhi on a hot late afternoon when a donkey passed by , it smelled some Mango peels and then moved on (without eating).

Bahadur Shah Zafar was also a poet and well versed in sarcasm so he said

Bahadur Shah Zafar: See Mirza, even donkeys don't like Mangoes

Mirza Ghalib (instantly replied): Indeed Sir, donkeys don't like Mangoes!

Bahadur Shah Zafar enjoyed the retort so much that he sent a carton of Fresh Mangoes to Mirza's house as a gift.

Its hilarious in Urdu but may be not so funny in English and yes it has been thrown back at me so many times in life...

Only the Non-Pushtuns of Afghanistan are stupid enough to spend half a day cooking Pilau with spices and then sprinkle almonds, raisins and pistachios on top to ruin the taste

Raisins? But why o why???
