Password riddle

A man wanted to enter an exclusive place but did not know the password that was required.

He waited by the door and listened.

A member knocked on the door and the doorman said, "twelve."

The member replied, "six " and was let in.

A second member came to the door and the doorman said, "six."

The member replied, "three" and was let in.

The man thought he had heard enough and walked up to the door.

The doorman said ,"ten" and the man replied, "five."

But he was not let in. What should have he said?

He should have said "three"

Why?

well the man wanting to get in, heard "twelve" and then "six" as the password. 1/2 of twelve is six. Then he heard "six" and the pasword was said to be: "three." Becuase 1/2 of six is three. Now he figures "Oh well so he gives me a number an di give 1/2 of it, easy enough." he goes to the doorman and hears "ten" and the man replies with "five" BUT he is wrong... Why

True 1/2 of 12=6, 1/2 of 6=3 and 1/2 of 10=5..But thats not the solution. the solution lies within the LETTERS in the 1st number given to the person currently at the door :

1) T W E L V E = SIX LETTERS

2) S I X= THREE LETTERS

3) TEN= THREE LETTERS.. NOT 5

Therefore he should have said "three"
