Ramadhan Handbook

Welcome Ramadan

On the last day of one Sha'ban, Rasulullah gave a sermon about the upcoming month of Ramdhan. It is a very important sermon that we should carefully read before every Ramadhan to prepare ourselves mentally for the sacred month. It begins:

"Oh people! A great month is coming to you. A blessed month. A month in which there is one night that is better than a thousand months. A month in which Allah
has made it compulsory upon you to fast day by day, and voluntary to pray by night.
Whoever drawn nearer to Allah by performijng any of the volutnary good deeds in this month shall recieve the same reward as is there an obligatory deed at any other time. nd whoever discharges an obligatory deed in this month shall recieve the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time. t is the month o Sabr (patience), and the reward for sabr is Paradise. It is the month of Kindness and charity. It is a month in which a believer's sustanence is increased. Whoever gives food to a fasting person to break his fast, shall have his sins forgiven, and he will be saved from the fire of hell, and he shall have the same reward as the fasting person, without the latter' reward being diminished at all."

Please always post in the correct section. Categories are there for a reason and posting too many times in the wrong section increases our work to move it to the correct section. Doing this often could enable temporary restrictions on starting new topics.

Fasting in the Ramadhan

The Obligation:
Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a act of obedience and sumbission to Allah's command throught the highest degree of commitment, sincerity and faithfulness to seek Allah's mercy, to atone for sins, errors, and mistakes and to avoid condemnation to Hell. The fasting during Ramadhan is obligatory on every adul, sane, and able muslim.

Time:When to fast
Fasting involves abstinence from food, drink =, and sexual intercourse from dawn
(approximately one and a half hours before sunrise) to sunset during the entire month of Ramadhan.

Who is exempted from fasting

1. Children and insane people
2. Men and women who are too old and feeble but they should offer one poor Muslim a full meal or its value per day
3. Sick people whose health is likely to be severely affected, people during
the hardship in travel, expectant or nursing women their children, women in
periods of menustration. But they must make up for it in latr days, a day for
a day.

Niyyah or INTENENTION OF Fast
To ovserve the fast, the intention of fasting is essential (Wajib)

Suhoor
Suhoor is alight, predawn meal, reccomended before actually fasting. It is a
blessing and hence recommended but not essential. Any consumption of food
or drink should cease at least five to ten minutes before onset of dawn.

Iftar
Iftar is an Arabic term meaning breakig the fast immediatly after the sunset.
Iftar is a light snack consisting of dates or desserts, alog with liquids, such as
water, juice or milk.

What breaks the Fast
1. Intentional consumption of food, drink, medicine, or smoking during during the fasting.
2.Any injection which has some nutritional value.
3. Beginning of menustration or post natal birth bleeding.

Kaffara
During the fasting period, if one delibrately breaks his or her fast, s/he must
fast for sixty continuos day, or feed sixty neddy persons, or spend in chariy an ampunt eqal to feeding sixty persons.

Breakin of the fast under exeptional conditions
there are some exceptional permissions, to break their fast of Ramadhaan when
there is a danger to their health. Te missed fast(s) can be made up at pther times of the year.

Taraweeh
These are special sunnah prayers in the month of ramadhaan. They follow the
Isha prayers. A minimum of eight and a maximimum of twenty Rakat are offered
in pairs of two

Your Famly, Ramadhaan and the Quran
Ramadhaan has been called the month of the Quran, since it was during this moth that Allahسبحانه وتعالى began revealing the Holy book to Rasulullah . Most Muslims try to finish one reading of the whole Quran during this month individually. But it's also a good idea to get the whole family in on this effort.
To get the whole family involved in reading more Quran this year during the blessed month, here are some tips:

Decide how much of the Quran to read daily
One of the key to reading the Quran for completion is to establish small,
attainable, daily goals. For instance, have everyone aim to read one quarter,
or ten lines of the Quran daily.

Read part of the Quran together every day
An ideal time is before bed, when everyone is in a calmer mood and food,
chore s, and homework are out of the way. Sit together and recite part of the
Quran.

Have a Quran family meeting every week
Make this a party. After Iftar on say, a Saturday or Sunday, following a deli-
cious meal in a Muslim resturant or at home, have everyone share how
much of the Quran they have covered.

Come up with a Quran reading chart
Get the younger kids to decorate theirs with stickers etc. Then hang it up on
the fridge or family bulletin board where everyone can see. Have one person
in charge of keeping track of everyone's progress and noting on the chart.

Listen to the Quran in the car
If your family drives together to school and work, use this an oppurtunity to listen to the Quran on cassete or Cd together

Encourage everyone to start a Quranic Journal
This will encourage everyone to not just read the Quran, but to also attempt
to understand atleast some of what they are reading. Encourage family
member to share entries if they feel comfortable during the Quran family
meetings.

Other incentives
These need to be in accordance with the ages and intrest of everyone
involved. For kids, this can be a toy or candy. For teenagers, permission to use
the family car or a slight increase in their weekly allowance may be helpful.
For mum and dad, a night out alone together. The purpose is to make the
process enjoyable and to help out family members look forward to a short-term
reward for their Quran reading.

Help each other memorize too
While your readong more of the Quran this month, try to get everyone in-
volved in at least some memorization of the Blessed book while your at it.
