Regarding the issue about picking and choosing, I have seen it on multiple fronts, and not just the deobandi/barelvi issue. However, the ulema e kiraam in the UK are much more aware of the challenges faced by the ummah, then I am. So I see no issue with your stance. Yes you should follow your local scholars, who are more aware of their surroundings.

I am a Jahil in deeni knowledge but being in my 40's and having grown up in this country, I have seen how the muslim community has evolved over the last few decades and the various stages it has gone through. To give you an amusing example I remember as a small child close to 40 years ago, a neighbour of ours got married and it was a big scandle for the Auntie jees on our road because the new bride used to sit in the front passenger seat next to her husband, whilst for that generation sense of Hayah was such that all the Aunties used to sit only in the back seats even when their husband was the driver, so it was "Bohat Behayah Larki Hai" "Koi Sharam nahi,"

As far as the intensity of Attacks on Islam what we facing right now it is unprecedented from every type of group and every angle...
