Today my son learnt about Prophet Yusuf (as) and he asked me about his burial because he was confused about the situation. When he told me what he had learnt I was honestly surprised too.
I always thought that the Prophets (as) were buried in their place of death. Or buried in the same manner as Adam (as)
Joseph (pbuh), at the moment of his death, asked his brothers to bury him beside his forefathers if they were to leave Egypt. So when Joseph (pbuh) passed away, he was mummified and placed in a coffin until such a time as he could be taken out of Egypt and buried beside his forefathers, as he had requested. It was said that he died at the age of one hundred ten.
The source of the opening post is ibn kathir I think.
It could just mean he was wrapped in a shroud, i.e. Kafan, but would be grateful if someone can clarify.
The same way Prophet Adam (as) was buried.
Abdullah Ibn Al Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal narrated that Ubai Ibn Kab said: "When Adam's death was near, he said to his children: "O my children, indeed I feel an appetite for the fruits of Paradise."
So they went away searching for what Adam had requested. They met with the angels, who had with them his shroud and what he was to be embalmed with. They said to them: "O Children of Adam, what are you searching for? What do you want? Where are you going?"
They said: "Our father is sick and has an appetite for the fruits of Paradise."
The angels said to them: "Go back, for your father is going to meet his end soon."
So they returned (with the angels) and when Eve saw them she recognized them. She tried to hide herself behind Adam. He said to her. "Leave me alone. I came before you; do not go between me and the angels of my Lord." So they took his soul, embalmed and wrapped him, dug the grave and laid him in it. They prayed on him and put him in his grave, saying: "O Children of Adam, this is your tradition at the time of death.""
Before his death Adam reassured his children that Allah would not leave man alone on the earth, but would sent His prophets to guide them. The prophets would have different names, traits and miracles, but they would be united in one thing; the call to worship Allah alone. This was Adam's bequest to his children. Adam finished speaking and closed his eyes. Then the angels entered his room and surrounded him. When he recognized the Angel of Death among them, his heart smiled peacefully.
Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned that once the messenger of Allah was a guest of a desert Arab, who proved to be a generous host. When he was about to leave, the messenger of Allah said ; Come and visit me in Al-Madinah. A few days later that Arab came to meet the messenger of Allah . The messenger of Allah asked him do you want anything ? The Arab replied : yes, I want a she camel with a covered litter and a goat which gives milk. Allah's messenger said: 'Alas had you only asked for something like an old woman belonging to Banu Israil had asked for!'
When the companions رضي الله عنه wanted to know about the incident, the messenger of Allah said : When Sayyidna Kalimullah (as) led bani Israil out of Egypt, he forgot the way. He tried a thousand times to find his way, but in vain. He gathered the people and asked them about the reason for this confusion. The scholars from amongst them replied : When Sayyidna Yusuf (as) time had come to close, he had us promise him to take his coffin along with us when we leave Egypt. Sayyidna Musa (as) then asked whether anyone where his grave was situated, none of the people replied in the affirmative, but thus said that there was a very old woman who knew where he was laid to rest. So Sayyidina Musa (as) sent someone to her, asking her to show the grave. The old woman said I will show you, but first I will take what is due to me. Sayyidina Musa (as) said what do you want ? She said I want to be your companion in Paradise. This was quite hard for Sayyidina Musa (as), but at that very instance it was revealed to him that he ought to accept that condition.
The old woman then took them to a lake and told them to draw its water, the colour of which had changed. They drew the water , and when the bed of the lake became visible, she told them dig here. So they began to dig unto the grave became visible. They took the coffin, then when they resumed their journey they found their way without any difficulty.
