Asslamo Allaikum,

Statement about Niqab:

In a recent article entitled "POR QUE NO BURQA?" Shaykh Hamza Yusuf makes a very disturbing statement about Niqab when he says:

While I am personally opposed to the face veil, it is a legitimate, if minority opinion, in the Islamic legal tradition for a woman to wear one.

This is a very strange statement considering the opinion of Hanafi, Shaf'ae, Maliki & Hanbali Madhab on the issue.

The famous commentator Imam Qurtubi (RA) was a Maliki and his commentary of the Qur'aan contains injunctions in line with his Madhab (i.e. the Maliki Madhab) and Shaykh (RA) write in commentary of verse 31 (Surah Al-Noor, Chapter 24).

quran.al-islam.com/Tafseer/DispTafsser.asp?nType=1&bm=&nS...

Shaykh (Maulana) Abdus-Shakur Brooks Maliki has also written a very good piece on Niqab from the Maliki Madhab:

www.abdusshakurbrooks.com/letter-concerning-the-niqab-in-...

Problems:

Shyakh Hamza Yusuf makes two very serious statements:

a) He is personally "opposed" to Niqab. How can someone be opposed to a Sunnah? Its one thing saying that he doesn't believe that its obligatory for a women to cover her face but to say "opposed"???

b) Legitimate, minority opinion? How can a minority opinion become legitimate? And where does he get the idea that wearing a Niqab is a minority opinion.

c) His opinion contradicts the Fiqh of his own Madhab so where is he getting these ideas from???

Statement about Non-Muslims:

Br Ali is a student of Shaykh (Mufti) Yusuf Mullan and he is currently studying in Al-Azhar, he writes on Sunniforum:

A friend of mine who is a Maulana was at an event where Hamza Yusuf was speaking. In Hamza Yusuf's speech, he spoke about how his non-Muslim mother is such a kindhearted person and she does many acts of charity, so how can she possibly be considered a kafir. After the speech, my friend confronted him about this, and Hamza Yusuf took him to the side, away from the rest of the gathering, and discretely told him that it is useful to be ambiguous. Additionally, if you read Muhammad Shareef's open letter to Hamza Yusuf confronting him about his controversial statements after 9-11, he responded to him that deception is permissible in a time of war. In light of the above (ambiguity is useful/war is deception), I take everything that he says with a grain of salt, neither declaring him a heretic for some of his ambiguous statements, nor following his every word blindly and dismissing those who bring legitimate criticism as bigots or extremists.

Problems:

How can someone take the words of a Scholar "seriously" when he clearly says that he practises deception?

This is very disturbing as many youth listen to his lectures..This just gives many Muslims the excuse to opt out of practicing upon the commands of Allah ta'ala...

Anyone who thinks purdah is not is not an Islamic obligation goes out the door with me ..his mother might be kindhearted but in order for her charity to be accepted by Allah she has to have Iman.

Nothing justifies his statement no matter which minute you hear it from in my opinion.

Bismillah.

Shaykh Hamza Yusuf is yesterday news. Not many people follow him now a days. His ambiguos statements and minority opinions on many issues in guidance from his teacher Mufti Abdullah Bin Bayaah. Has lost him whatever credibility he had.

Along with his and his Teachers close association with the U.A.E.
Yvonne Ridley wrote an article recently slamming him.

On the flipside there has been a social media campaign against him by the modern social activist Progressive Islam Cult. For his refusing to budge on LBTQ issues on the like.

Whatsmore there seems to be a wholesale rejection of traditional scholarship...and political and media activist and there totally corrupt opinions as being taken as the Islamic standard. Ilhan Omar, Linda Sarsour et al.

Then you have the quietism and totally ambiguos stances on some issues... By some more prominent shuyookh of today, that represent a far greater threat and confusion then Shaykh Hamza Yusuf.

Everyone should read the short articles and posts on the written by Daniel Haqiqatjou on the Muslim Skeptic...
muslimskeptic.com/2019/10/15/omar-suleiman-lgbt-rights-ya...

What is happening right now in American Islam...Represents a far greater danger then anything Shaykh Hamza Yusuf has said and done.

Edit: The above article I linked to is fairly long but is a must read.

Listening to his statements in their entirety, he was making very valid points. Now, if perhaps his choice of words or expressions at one or two instances was, subjectively, problematic, then that is unfortunate. He is a valuable asset to the Ummah.

In Islam, if a Muslim says something that sounds problematic, aren't we supposed to get clarification from the speaker? Also, shouldn't we come up with excuses and say that perhaps we misunderstood what he was trying to say?

Please maintain respect for each other and Ulamaa (if topic is about a scholar) by avoiding accusations and slanderous comments. Also remember that in order for criticism to be constructive, it must be channeled in the right direction. If there is any doubt in a matter, it is better to ask, clarify or to remain silent rather than to speak ill of another person.

If questioned he will deny thats what he meant and claim he has been misunderstood. A few months or a year or so later he will repeat something similar or more controversial. So on and so forth. This has become a regular pattern for him.

In a nutshell I am part of the Shaykh Hamza Yusuf generation of the 1990's. Those who followed and listened to his lectures morning noon and night.

The Shaykh Hamza Yusuf of that time was stringent and strict on every issue. Taught young muslims not to have an inferiority complex. Be proud to be muslim and follow Islam and its pristine and pure form without compromise.
He was charismatic and defiant raged against America and Europe and their foreign policies, against Secularism and Zionism. Raged against the corrupt muslim rulers and regimes. Against Usury and the corrupt financial systems and much more.

Then September 11 happened. And we ended up with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf 2.0. Who seemed to take an about turn on every issue. Its not just the above remarks he has made even more controversial and confusing statements in the last 20 years no one takes him seriously. There are probably other threads concerning them.

In a nutshell he is someone who is best avoided. He is now the Maulana Wahidudin Khan of America.
