salam.

I have a question regarding esaal e swaab,

Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim write that:
A man came to the Prophet Muhammad [May Allah bless Him and grant Him peace] and said 'My mother has suddenly died and she did not leave any will, but I suspect that if she did that then she would have told me to give something to charity. Now if I offer something in charity on her behalf, will she get the reward?'Prophet Muhammad [May Allah bless Him and grant Him peace] said 'Yes'. Then the man said that I make you, the Prophet, as my witness, that I offer my garden full of fruits to charity.
(Bukhari Muslim, Chapter Al-Wasiha)

i know you can give charity,do Hajj and build a well or masjid for the reward for the deceased,but my question is is there any hadith regarding reciting the quran and asking Allah to pass the reward to the deceased will the recited quran benefit the dead person,if the attention was to read for that person.

I also have a huge dilemma on my hands regarding yearly hattam of the deceased

As your all aware i come from a barelvi family including all relatives,so hattam is part of their custom,i dont attend the relatives hattam,but i am really stuck when it comes to my husbands immediate family and my grandparents,as for my husbands,his father,s brothers and sister-in laws and sisters,i dont have no choice but to go with him,i have tried to explain this is not islam its Hindu customs,and its wrong to keep the death date and do hataam on that day,but he gets angry and starts arguments with me,so just to keep peace and keep clear of arguments,i go with him,and i pray Allah for gives me for this sin....any advice what i can do?he doesn't push me to go to the relatives hataam,and i dont go..but when its in our house meaning his families,then i get no choice.

Though not from a Barelwi background we too used to attend khatams which is regarded as a bid'at. The only thing that stopped my family was education....talking about the fact that it was a bid'at and not practiced by our Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam or his Sahaba or those who followed helped a lot. It took some time and i too had to make a stand and refuse to attend. For those family members who would not accept is as a bid'at i simply said that when i die i have instructed my children not to do this, this this and they have no say in it.

Eventually, alhamdulillah all members and many other families too stopped. The advantage i had was that there was a group of us frends who all worked together on these kind of matters (bid'at practices at funerals, nikahs etc.) and so we had support from each other.

You seem to be in a no win situation but Allah will help sister. I think you should work on one or two members of the family first (choose those members who have some clout), get them to understand and then make a stand together.

As for the first post sorry i have no knowledge about specific hadith regarding Qur'an recitation for isaail thawaab

i know what your saying sis,but if only one would think on my level,then it can be possible,but everyone's,mentality is the same,besides if i was guy,then it might have made a differences,but as i am women,so no one is taking notice on what i say,the reply i get is our forefathers did it and so did generations before them.my whole point is our forefathers where illiterate and none the wiser,but my voice is deafness to their ears.

walaykum salaam,

sister-in-islam shukr alhamdolillah i don't have any relatives who are of any deviant sects ..where we come from 99.9% are Deobandi,thats the swat Valley,northern Pakistan..i think instead of being at loggerheads with your husband on issues ..best thing would be for all your household is if you start taleem,thats just reading 10minutes out of "Fazail Amal " each day.. and even letting other household members take turns reading..inshallah they will really understand and the flicker of true Iman will enter into their hearts..this book contains many Hadith..and when Hadith are being read the Angels of Allah also gather around to listen and witness..but make sure there are no pictures of living things in the room..because the angels of mercy wont enter.

thank you for the advice..i have read quotes from hadith and read the quran and told him that no where it says regarding hataam,many proofs iv showed him....
the reply i get these books are written by Wahhabi,they call everyone Wahhabi..i read out books of knowledge on deen,the only reply i get is nothing will be found in them,because the author of these books are Wahhabi. read up sunni books,you will see all the proof,thats the reply i get.

yes..this is typical barelwi..we are obviously not wahbai sect..so they lie too..just like they falsely accuse the great Ulamah..Just make Dua for them and you continue the good works inshallah.

The Sunnat method of Isaal-e-Thawaab, but will briefly summarise it hereunder:

(1). Dua and Astaghfaar may be regularly made for one‟s deceased buzrugs and friends.

(2). As much as is possible, one may recite Durood Shareef, make Tilaawat of Qur`aan Shareef, recite Kalimah and Tasbeeh, etc. and convey the Isaal-e-Thawaab to someone else. If every Muslim daily recites Durood Shareef thrice, Surah Faatihah and Surah Ikhlaas and conveys the reward onto the deceased, then the right which is due upon us for the deceased will, to a certain extent be fulfilled.

(3). Nafl Salaat, roza, Hajj and Qurbaani may also be conveyed as Isaal-e-Thawaab.

(4). Sadaqah and charity may also be conveyed as Isaal-e-Thawaab, but there is no specific time and place for the execution of this. Neither should the preparation of food be specified for this, nor the attendance of Miajee. Whenever it is convenient for one, then occasionally some money, clothes, grain or whatever item is suitable may be given to the poor with the intention of gaining Allaah Ta`ala‟s Pleasure. This then, is the method of Isaal-e-Thawaab which was taught to us by Nabi (sallAllaahu alaihi wasallam) and which was practiced by our seniors and Salf-e-Saaliheen of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat.

May Allah reward all the Muslim deceased with jannatul firdaus.

May Allah give us the ability to practice upon this teaching so that we can continue to pass on rewards as well as teach our children what to do when we pass away.

May Allah make it easy for those who have lost loved ones.

(wrt the Barelwi issue, I find that they won't listen either, so the my solution is to answer them with their own sources. Even thier books don't have evidence and their Ulama say what our Ulama mostly say anyway. Most of these people are being re educated via all these free Barelwi sky tv channels, get them to call up a Barelwi scholar and all will be clear, that's if they have access to the tv or phone number)
