SubhanAllah, I just realized one thing and never thought about it before and probably just speculating.

Hazrat Maryam عليه السلام was in severe pain and then she is told "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream".

Surah Maryam, Verse 23:

And the throes (of childbirth) compelled her to betake herself to the trunk of a palm tree. She said: Oh, would that I had died before this, and had been a thing quite forgotten!

Surah Maryam, Verse 24:
فَنَادَاهَا مِن تَحْتِهَا أَلَّا تَحْزَنِي قَدْ جَعَلَ رَبُّكِ تَحْتَكِ سَرِيًّا

Then (the child) called out to her from beneath her: Grieve not, surely your Lord has made a stream to flow beneath you;
(English - Shakir)

via iQuran

Is this indicating towards the use of birthing pool to ease the pain? Since many pregnant women sit in a pool to ease the pain, a natural pain killer? However, I do appreciate that she is being told to eat and drink in the later verses. Obviously, she wouldn't be drinking from the same water if she was easing her pain in it, or would she?

Quote:
Can a muslim women have a water birth?

Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

According to our understanding, the purpose of the water birth is to achieve maximum comfort and to minimize the pains of childbirth; therefore, there seems to be nothing contrary to the dictates of the Sharī‘ah by delivering a baby in this manner. However, we would advise the father and mother to discuss the matter with medical professionals, preferably Muslim doctors, to ensure that the procedure is safe for mother and child. The surveys that we have reviewed have shown that the possibility of harm is negligible. However, the opinion of medical professionals should still be sought as a matter of precaution. It should also be noted that the water birth method is definitely more preferable than a caesarian section, which affects the health of the mother and generally limits her ability of delivering more than three to four children.

And Allah knows best

Although permitted, is this verse an indication towards it?

Okay, So I think I've answered my own question, SubhanAllah.

Not sure of the authenticity of this post, but it has been suggested already - Not a Jewel of the Quran that I've found after all :)

Quote:
Allah Creates a Stream

Allah told Maryam that He had placed a stream by her feet to eat, drink, and delight her eyes.

Water, like dates, eases labor pains and regulates muscle tension. In fact, some modern birth clinics have pools in which the delivery takes place.

Water, which is necessary for life and one's physical well-being, plays an important role in regulating the body's temperature, transporting nutritional elements and oxygen, and removing waste matter from the body's cells. It also ensures the healthy movement of joints, skin moisture and elasticity, the digestive system, and protects tissues and organs. Water is becoming more widely used in therapy by the day. Contact with water stimulates the immune system, increases anti-stress hormone production, reduces pain, and stimulates blood circulation and metabolism.

Water is important during pregnancy for several reasons. At that time, water intake is especially necessary because the volume of blood increases and because of the developing baby's needs. Women who choose to breast-feed need plenty of water to produce the necessary amount of milk. Considering that 87 percent of this milk is water, we can see how important this production is.

Water also maintains the electrolyte balances in the blood of the mother and the child. Hormones released during pregnancy alter the way various body fluids are used. Toward the end of the woman's pregnancy, blood volume increases 150 percent, and the loss of water through breathing is much greater. The amnion fluid, in which the baby grows, is renewed every three hours. However, it can decrease, as in the case of dehydration caused by insufficient water intake.

Dehydration during pregnancy also can cause premature labor. Some hormones released in such situations imitate the hormones that trigger labor pains. Cases in which premature birth is a significant risk are treated by giving fluids through the veins, a procedure that highlights the importance of water intake. Such premature tensions are often cured by this fluid therapy.

Water also forms the human body's transport system. Via the bloodstream, it carries food and oxygen to the embryo and helps prevent some common infections that can cause miscarriage or premature labor and birth. Sufficient water intake reduces the risks of such infections. Doctors inform their patients that their water requirement increases by 50 percent during pregnancy. If the water intake is insufficient, the body reduces the quantity of some fluids, which, in turn, causes various complaints.

Modern science shows once more the wisdom in Allah's creation of the stream for Maryam and His advice to eat dates and drink water. All of this is evidence of Allah's infinite knowledge.

Okay, so another thought just came to mind.

Allah also mentioned that it was a "Flowing Stream" indicating that the water was pure and not like a pool where the water would become naajis (impure). So it could be used as a soothing tool as well as for drinking.

Secrets of Surah Maryam.

When a Mother is giving birth it can be the most painful period in her life, its not easy....Now when Maryam PBUH was (pregnant with Jesus PBUH) was going through such pain, Allah in the Quran takes her near a stream of water, You have to listen carefully to the science of this verses,
Allah takes her near a stream of water where next to it is a Palm tree, Allah instructs her to shake the palm tree and keep pulling down from trunks of the palm tree, so the dates can fall down for her,
Some people may ask why is Allah telling us about the palm tree, the stream of water and the dates? Why did Allah not just simply tell us that she gave birth to Jesus (pbuh) and that's it, why all these details??
Now here is the miracle, Firstly Allah tells her to shake the palm tree and keep pulling, some hospitals until very recently when a Mother is about to give birth, there is something they will tell her to hold on to and they tell her to keep pulling it back so it eases labour pain and muscle tension.
Then Allah tells her to cool herself with water, there are modern hospitals today that tell pregnant women to sit in cool water as it will help them give birth,
Then Allah tells her in the Quran that when she has relaxed in the water it will make her birth pain easier but he also tells her to straight away to eat the dates that fall....
Now one may ask why did Allah instruct her to eat the dates?? This is because dates contain within them easily absorb-able sugars which help the heat and the movement and these sugars are of the fructose type which help raise the blood pressure....
So the methods Hospitals are using today to ease birth pains, Allah has hinted in the Quran 1400 years back....Subhanallah
