Restoring The Bara Tasbih & Paas Anfas Thread from Sunniforum.com

At the outset the following thread was meant to be a discussion on the stages of Paas Anfas and the Bara Tasbeeh of the Chishtiya which progressed to the translation of the book Ibtidayi Adhkar wa Asghal by Hazrat Sufi Iqbal Madani رحمة الله عليه who was also known as the 'Pen' of Hazrat Shaikh ul Hadith Maulana Muhammed Zakariya sahab Kandhelwi رحمة الله عليه & was also amongst his elite khulafa..

Kindly note that إن شاء الله The thread could prove especially beneficial for :

1) English speaking Mashaikh for whom the works of our Deobandi Shuyukh are out of reach..

2) Mureedin who have been already taught the Tasbeeh by thier respected Shuyukh..

3) Those Saalikeen who are on some prescribed Adhkar shall gain by useful hints provided in this book إن شاء الله..

4) Those who want to learn about the Adhkar prescribed by our beloved Hazrat Shaikhul Hadees Maulana Zakariyya sahab kandhelwi رحمة الله عليه

Also know that the Adhkar & Asghal mentioned are only meant for those who have been given Permission (ijazah) (or prescribed) by their respective Shuyookh and are NOT meant as a DIY exercise for anyone.

This is the Book..

Summarization of first few pages..

" Hazrat Murshid Shaikh ul Hadith Damathu barkatahum had on many occasions expressed his desire, with great emphasis that he wishes his friends to be excessively engaged in Zikr, that no moment passes away in ignorance.

The life of Hazrat itself bears living testimony to the above statement. I can recollect many incidents of hazrat's attachment to zikr which are awe inspiring and a lesson to all. which i withold here from writing due to fear of its length.

Just to quote a kashf of a buzurg that seeing the preoccupance of Hazrat shaikh رحمة الله عليه , Rasulullah (saw) remarked that 'I like his habit that he never wastes any time', that being always pre-occupied had become the nature of hazrat."

" Hazrat Madani رحمة الله عليه writes in a letter - This precious life and its moments are priceless jewels , we due to our ignorance are wasting it away.. the result of which being regret could not be anything else."

" Hazrat Madani رحمة الله عليه writes in Letter 93 (Maktoob) that the prime objective of Paas Anfas is that no breath should be bereft of the Zikr of Allah سبحانه وتعالى . neither the one that is inspired nor the one thats expired. that humans breathe 25 thousand breaths per day ( Irshad e Murshid reports 24 thousand ) every breath should be filled with zikr. that the portion of life spent in zikr is the real life and thts the life which bears fruit."

The Lesson Of Paas Anfas

Similar to the way of getting cured from physical illnesses is the desire of every patient but the choice of medicine , directions of use, dosage and timings and the clinical variations of patients differ by and large. Likewise, for purification of the heart and treating spiritual illnesses like idleness so as to evolve the effects of zikr in continuum lies the neccessity for the various Adhkar and Ashghal.

Paas anfas happens to be among one such zikr that should be learn't as prescribed by the shaikh. the selection of zikr should be left solely at the discretion of the Shaikh and the Talib (seeker) should not possess an opinion howsoever learned or intelligent he may be. that self opinions are hindrance in the path of Sulook and that the Barakah and effect of shaikh's prescription is different altogather.

Hazrat Shaikhul Hadees رحمة الله عليه writes in ' Shariat o Tariqat ka talazum ' that there are different ways of Paas Anfaas which are prevalent among the Mashaikh. it should always be done at the directions of the shaikh but the commonality existing amongst all is that with every breath the Zikr of Allah should be done ( be it Nafi Asbaat or Zikr isme zaat).

I shall now write about a very easy and common method which have been divided into three stages or types of Paas Anfas. so that it becomes easy to practise and progress from one stage ot another.

The 1st level or type of Paas Anfas

That the name of Allah should be inspired in and the word ' HU' be exhaled out with some force while breathing without any movement of the tongue. The word Allah should be fixed in mind while breathing in and the word ' HU' formed in thought while breathing out. this may be done somewhat forcefully while practicing initially.. thereafter with normal breaths after learning the method.

In the beginning it should be done for a short while like 15 minutess at a fixed time which can thereafter be gradually increased. in between Adhaan and Salah and whenever possible this can be done. such that it becomes an indulgence at all times and forms a habit while attending to even worldy needs.

The second Level of Paas anfas

The breath that is inspired in with the thought of ism mubarak 'Allah', ' Hu Al Batin' should also be enjoined. similarly with the exhaled breath of Hu, 'Hu Al Zahir ' be fixed in mind. as a result of which a Tasawwur (awareness) is created in the mind of the Talib that in Zahir (Apparent / outward) and Batin (inward) theres only the zaat (essence /being) of Allah.

When mastered upon this, then exercise your thought sometimes like the way Alam e asghar (human body) is manifested with the zuhoor of the isme zaat , similarly all the creations radiate with the brilliance of isme Mubarak ' Hu Al Zahir Hu Al Batin'.

(excerpt from Zia ul Quloob and Maktubat Hazrat Gangohi رحمة الله عليه written to Hazrat Sahranpuri رحمة الله عليه

After getting well versed by practising the above, the need for exclusive Tawajjuh and focus would be less needed henceforth in the the next shugal. now at this time with habitual continuity of zikr the focus should be diverted away from the Ism mubarak to the Zaat e Muqaddasiah. this shall initiate the ' Jaari ' of Zikr e Qalbi and the road to advance in sulook shall open up.

Firstly, it shall come to self realization that while remembering the 'Ism', the focus is automatically shifted to the ' Musamma '. That the ism Mubarak (blessed name) is not separate from zaat e paak (The Pure essence).

That this Mubarak ism is a Tajalli (manifestation) of zaat e pak in the Alam alfaz due to which the manifestation of zaat e paak begins to emanate gradually in the heart.

This zuhoor becomes Noor e ishq.. turning ever attentive towards zaat e muqaddasia, negating one and all that was ghair, freeing oneself from all the rest.

such that this task is achieved by the talib sadiq quite easily, but now with little effort his Tawajjah qalbi would be directed entirely towards zaat e muqaddasa.

This condition is known as wusool, mushahida or Martaba ehsan (The stage of Ihsaan) . the task now lies in strengthening it with regular practice and indulgence.

At this stage, whatever Ahwal (spiritual conditions) or thoughts that may occur should immidiately be brought to the notice of the shaikh. Also care must be taken now not to forsake the sunnah, Aqaid and Amaal of shariah or-else destruction would be imminent. And that except for the pleasure of Allah, no Maqam or Haal be made as the prime motive nor importance be given to these.

The Third Level of Paas Anfas

In which the pleasure of heaven, Hayatan Tayyiba, Mahbubiyyat ammah (universal love) and Sukoon e Qalb (Tranquility of Heart) is derived.

After passing through the second level of this shugal with istiqamah (constancy), the talib automatically enters the third level. it does require the raabta (connection) of Shaikh, but for further progress lessons or specific Adhkar are not required. the talib now enters the vast plains of Maarifah (gnosis).

It now becomes very difficult for the nafs to remain negligent of zikr, and for him zikr e lisani (verbalised Zikr), khafi (silent zikr), Jahri (loud zikr), Qalbi and Muraqabaat (contemplations), settles at one level and in one line. he now surges ahead more with recitation of Qur'an, Masnoon awrad and service of deen than with ashgal. but the ashgal due to which he reached here should not be abandoned.

Now zikr has become a dominant virtue of the salik, Huzoori (awarenes) is acheived, how wonderful it feels that 'Iam before You and You are with Me', becomes the scene. now all his zahiri and batini A'maal (actions) shall be for the sake of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.

With the condition of the heart being constantly in the company of the beloved, rests the pleasure of Jannah in this world. Just like in Jannah (Paradise) where the greatest bounty would be the sight of the Lord, which shall be with the naked eyes.

Method-

To sit with the beloved, it is better to always fix a certain time for seclusion. now fix the thought of zaat e pak (The pure essence/being) with huzoori and virtue of samadiyyat. That the zaat (being) towards whom I have turned myself to, is with me, is As Samad (The Eternal).

That I, in every moment, in every deed, in every way 'am dependent on him. such that for my existence and even his remembrance and to ask from him requires his Taufeeq (divine guidance).

Its for you to realise now that with such thoughtful zikr would it not bring about immense love, pleasure and peace at heart. And the pleasure of higher stations of zikr would be achieved. "

The Means of Ma’arifah

Hazrat Sa’adun رحمة الله عليه said to Hazrat Zinnun Misri رحمة الله عليه that I have learnt you wish to listen about the means of ma’arifah..to which he replied that we should benefit from your uloom..

Hazrat Sa’adun رحمة الله عليه then recited two couplets in Arabic which meant that the hearts of Aarifeen are always eager in the remembrance of the lord.. and they lament in eagerness.. such that they reach the higher stations of his proximity.. and they are delved so deeply in love of their lord ( with khuloos/sincerity ) that there does not exist anything that would take them away from His love..

Our duty is spend the nights crying in love of the beloved..
Our sleep is to get annihilated in the thoughts of the dearest.

May Allah سبحانه وتعالى by his 'Fadl' (divine grace) give us the taufeeq to value this simple shugl as a means of attaining his proximity.. such that la’in shakartum la’azeedannakum it shall be increased further..

Essential Clarification

While discussing on the Pas anfas and its its various methods that mashaikh of sulook are acquainted with.. let it be known that it shall be practiced only upon the instructions of the shaikh..
it is universally accepted among all mashaikh that with each breath the Zikr of Allah is done.. and this similarity is attached with Pan anfas when it is done as a shughl..

but the motives and benefits of Pas anfas mentioned afore for eg. Purification of heart and remaining attentive of Allah سبحانه وتعالى if achieved by other ashghal & means.. then there is no need to stress only on Pas Anfas..

Such that with Pas Anfas the maximum zikr one could recite would be about 24,000 times (per day) whereas with other methods like Zikr lisani and Qalbi it would reach in lakhs.. and those fortunate who pursue the above motives have their zikr more than lakhs.. and reach very high in their spiritual progress..

Since such a Sahib e Nisbat person would continue his zikr with Faraidh and sunnnah; carrying out the various injunctions of Shar’iah..

observing the injunctions of Shari’ah with ikhlaas (sincereity) by even indulging in sale or purchase..or even fighting (for the sake of Allah سبحانه وتعالى ) or merely sharing a light moment.., according to their maratib.. would be all considered as Zikr..

And the highest Zikr would be achieved by fulfilling obligations like salah..because injunctions of Shari'ah are the scales of his pleasure.. when every act shall be performed in accordance with the shari’ah.. remaining attentive of the lawgiver’s presence before you.. then each act shall contain the pleasure and remembrance of the Master..

In the Ahkam (injucntions) of Shar’iah the real Master (lawgiver) is definately Allah سبحانه وتعالى .. but the rewards of Amal e Shari’ah (actions in accordance with shar'iah) like Pleasure (ridha) and zikr shall only be reaped when both the zahiri and Batini prerequisites of an act are fulfilled..

Zahiri precondition with Fiqh and Batini prerequisite being Iman (faith) and Ihtisab (contemplation), yaqeen and Ihsaan ( achieving it by either study of Kanz, Qudoori or indulging in Zikr and Ashghal).

Even in the virtues and benefits of salah these prerequisites are duly attached..and in the absence of these.. the status of these amals are incomplete.. ineffective.. causal to distance away from Allah سبحانه وتعالى rather than gaining his proximity.. and is slapped back on his face as mentioned in Qur’an and hadeeth.. these prerequisites are precedent before the A’maal (actions) and forms its spirit..

On the other hand these very prerequisites are also known as A’maal e Batini.. and their virtue and acceptance is attached with A’maal e Zahir (outward actions)..

For example if someone sits indulged in the kaifiyat (condition) of Ihsaan and Huzoori, and does not stands up to offer salah.. or does not observe faraidh (obligatory acts) in his dealings.. then such ihsaani kaifiyat are not reliable..

Of course when he combines this kaifiyat with Fiqhi understanding and observes the obligations of Shari’ah.. then such a salah would be a thousand times more effective and worthy than one prayed without Huzoori (attentiveness)..

It is generally here that we see Ulema of Zahir and sufis falling into error. Some people feel that the islah (rectification) of Zahiri A’maal (apparent deeds) is a means for islah of Batin (rectification of innerself).

Whereas the noble ahadith has given preference to the islah of Qalb..iza saluhat saluhal jasadu kulluh (Hadith) and the other few struck with vanity; neglect taqwa in Ibadaat and Ma’amalat after islah of batin..

Such that in Hadith of ihsan it is mentioned an ta’budallah..meaning that worship when performed with this kayfiyat is known as Ihsan..that when Taqwa and Tawadhu is absent in Ibadat and Ma’amalat then it is not the kayfiyat of ihsan.. but only of subjective awareness..

So far Nisbat and Ta’alluq Ma’Allah has not been achieved because Yad Dasht (awareness) and Nisbat are both interlinked… even though Nisbat.., Islah e Akhlaq and Islah e Ma’amalat are separate entities.. but the evolution of these qualities after attaining Nisbat is so inevitable.. just like it is deemed necessary by all that a strong Iman should be covered with Islam..

Such that when Yad Dasht (awareness) shall be combined with an attachment of love.. then his every act shall be taken measured before the scales of the beloved omnipresent Lord.. and he shall be aware of Shar’ii injunctions.. and this is called as Ihsan..

Due to this, his every action becomes Ibadah and a means of achieving Ridha (pleasure) and Zikr..

The motive of this clarification was to highlight that by reading about the benefits and virtues of Pas anfas one should not assume that all of these are only contained in the Shugl of Pas Anfas.. and the Mashaikh of tareeqat where this Shughl is not practiced should not be taken as empty of these barakat...

For example the people of Nasqshbandiya do not have Shugl Pas Anfas per se but have Wuquf e Zamani (Reprising one's thoughts and actions) and Hosh Dar Dam (awareness of breath)..

The Zikr Bara Tasbeeh of Hazrat e Chishtiya

Once some one requested Hazrat Hafiz Dhamin Shaheeed sahab رحمة الله عليه ..saying ‘ Hazrat teach us the Bara Tasbeeh..’ Hazrat got upset hearing this and said…’All through life this is my only achievement..and you want me to give it to you.. the way I have toiled to get it.. you too should strive.. I shall teach at my own will.. and you wish to earn it without paying a dime..’

Hazrat Khwaja Azizul Hasan sahab Majzoob رحمة الله عليه says that..

My chattels are earned save not of gratis.. with courage and ardor did I bleed..
And why should I give it away freely.. my merchandise is not at all gratuitous..

(Ma’arif al Akabir)

Hazrat Murshidi ( Hazrat Shaikhul Hadees sahab رحمة الله عليه ) Damatbarakatuhu does not initiate anyone with this Zikr.. but gives out the printed copies of a beginners routine consisting of 16 points with advice to act on.

Only after a minimum of 6 months owing to the continuum in zeal..,contact with the Shaikh,..interest.., mental capacity,..flexibility of time.., eagerness to advance… and a stable mind that he would be instructed.

Whereas with Hazrat Hakeem ul Ummat Thanwi رحمة الله عليه it was even more strict to teach it to a commoner..

Since these Adhkar are meant for Tazkiya and is similar to a purgative which when stopped in between is known to cause more harm… such that to abandon it after initiation or remaining inconsistent.. or after gaining Ahwal being disconnected with the shaikh.. lack of close contact.. and failure of compliance..are all known to cause deeni drawbacks..

(The details of its demerits can be read in Risala Mohabbat; P:107)

بسم الله الرحمن اللرحيم

So it is strictly Not recommended to begin without the permission & advice of one’s shaikh and also learn the method as instructed by him. The benefits of remembrance of Allah سبحانه وتعالى and the virtues of Afdhal us zikr Nafi asbaat (La ilahai Ilallah) can be read from Fadhail e Zikr written by my Murshid so as to evoke eagerness..

The method and pattern that would be mentioned here is intended for Tazkiya and seeking of Nisbat.. aside from, the means to achieve the goal is not compelling to be rewarded.. but since its being a tool to achieve the goal.. it shall also carry rewards..since to achieve Nisbat it is essential to observe the method.. order.. and requisites..

The exposition of Achievement of goal by Method and order

(excerpt from Risalah Shariat wa Tariqat ka Talazum)

It begins with Two Tasbeehat (meaning 200times) of la ilaha illallah..then four Tasbeehat of Illallah (400times)..followed by six tasbeehat (600 times) of Allahu Allah.. and at the end the solitary name of Isme zaat Allah Allah..(100 times)

The goal of this zikr is Fana e Ilmi ghairullah and to gradually progress in Tawajjuh ilallah.. since there is aggravated Mash’hood (either in the forms of dreams/visions/ etc).. such that with La ilaha illallah all these are negated..followed by affirmation..

Therafter when this level of negation has progressed up.. to establish the proof of his pure Zaat in the mind.. repetition of illallah is given.. even proof was fused as a medicine.. and now the gaze is lifted even higher above.. to fix the mind at Tasawwur of Zaat.. so the repetition of ism jalalahu is thrust..

The accomplishment of which leads to renouncing the detestable from the heart and a special longing for that which is so cherished.. Ingraining it deeply..

Thereby fulfilling the rights of the complete zikr and achieving its goal…and one day.. the real zikr ie, eternal Tawajjuh ilallah shall be achieved.

(Shariat wa Tareeqat ka Talazum)

The exegesis on evolution of love by Zikr.. its effects and benefits have been dealt with a detailed explanation in Risalah Mohabbat in which the answers to many objections shall be obtained.

Method

This Zikr of Bara Tasbeeh according to our Mashaikh is to be initiated all at once. but, if the Saalik is weak then he may begin with Two Tasbeeh. .then after each 40 days he can build it up gradually.

Even for this bondsman my affectionate Shaikh had begun with a single Tasbeeh then later on after a brief period was told to complete the entire Tasbeeh..

After Tahajjud or post Fajr at any fixed time of solitude and repose… it is advisable to sit facing the Qibla with ablution and recite durood and istighfar.. and with outmost humility recite the following dua..

Allahumma Tah’hir Qalbi an ghairika wa nawwir qalbi bi nuri ma’rifatika

And fix the thought that for all the time I would spend in zikr.. Allah kareem shall also remember me with his special mercy.. such that fadhkuruni adhkuru kum is his covenant..

With this.. recollection.. enthusiasm and tranquility shall be attained in zikr.. thereafter one should recite Durood shareef 11 times.. and Suarh ikhlas 11 times and send isaal e sawab to the Mashaikh of the silsila..and for a moment or two envision that Faizan e ilahi is being transferred from the heart of my shaikh towards mine..and my heart is in communion and before him….

بسم الله الرحمن اللرحيم

Then sit with legs crossed in front… back straight.. and with deep obeisance and solace begin the Zikr.
( Obeisance means that apart from Radha e Haq (Pleasure of Allah)there is no other motive)

Bending the head towards the heart and pulling out La forcefully from within thereby moving on to right shoulder with ilaha ..then bending head backwards envision that I have removed every Ghair Allah from my heart and thrown it far back… leave the breath with the Dharb of Ilallah hitting the heart.. and perceive that the love of Allah and his Nur is being transfused in my heart..

This way recite 200 of Nafi Asbaat and in between keep reciting Muhammed ur Rasulullah (saw) after 10-11 times.
Thereafter momentarily keep on closing eyes and feel that Faizan e ilahi is flowing into my heart from the Arsh

If the Zakir is strong then in a moderate voice but with an intensely powerful thrust dharb shall be done….and if he is weak then light dharb is advised.

Then he shall do the dharb of illallah back to back 400 times on the heart….then for a moment or two imagine the incoming of faiz.. ( by visualizing the incoming of Faiz to heart.. it shall certainly flow in. Perception of Faiz ie, its effect and Noor is not mandatory)

Then recite Allahu Allah such that the first word to be pronounced Allahu joined with second as Allah.. after closing eyes and bringing head to right shoulder both the Dharbs of Allahu Allah shall be hit on the heart repeatedly for 600 times.
And somewhere in the middle Allahu Haziri, Allahu Naziri and Allahu Ma’ee can also be recited.

Thereafter only the dharb of Allah shall be recited for a hundred times...

This zikr is to be taught by the Shaikh practically in his presence. Initially, the shaikh demonstrates it and then asks the saalik to repeat such that errors if any are resolved. When after a due course of time.. if there is an enthusiasm to advance in zikr and in presence of a stable mind.. then with the permission of the Shaikh the last Tasbeeh of isme Zaat Allah could be increased to 1000, 3000 and 6000 times as and how the shaikh advices.

A Brief manual of Zikr Nafi asbaat

There also exists a brief manual of Nafi asbaat in the routine of my murshid damathubarakatuhum with the method described above consisting of 3 tasbeehat (300 times) of Nafi asbaat then 5 Tasbeehat (500 times) of isme Zaat Allah .. then on the advice of the Murshid it is then gradually increased.

Few notes regarding Nafi asbaat

1.It was earlier mentioned that after reciting 10 times to also read Muhammed ur Rasulullah (saw) .. if the count of 10 is done easily then fine.. else it could be repeated after any number of times. Similarly, it is better to learn the complete details with prerequisites and movements at an early stage itself and keep in practice. But there is no need to be always overcautious of these criterion. Such that it does not hamper the concentration towards the goal.. affecting ones absorption and awareness.

Also that an old zakir while pronouncing the Makharij or complying with the movements and method of Zikr makes some minor aberrations then it is better not to rebuke him.

2.Fix a time for zikr when one is not too hungry or on a heavy stomach. Neither should one feel too sleepy. Whereas there is no need to be concerned about wasawis since the cure to these is to ignore them and continue with Zikr. In this condition pleasure will be less which is not the motive but the reward shall be great:

Guft Qutub Shaikh Gangohi Rasheed ,.. Zikr Raya bi ba har halat Mufeed

( says Qutub e Rabbani Hazrat Maulana Rasheed Ahmed Gangohi sahab رحمة الله عليه that even if done inattentively zikr is always beneficial)

(Arif Billah Hazrat Maulana Hakeem Muhammed Akhtar sahab رحمة الله عليه)

3. When the time for Zikr approaches it is better to await and prepare oneself with zeal and enthusiasm.. if it doesn’t occur naturally then one may even do it formally. When possible perform ghusl and apply perfume.

if at this time the hidden enemy (shaytan) reminds of some important work then with rage throw it afar.. but in case there really happens to be a short errand necessary to be attended upon ..then it is better to be relived of it quickly so that its thought shall not recur to disturb while in Zikr.

4. For those trapped in lustful love.. Hazrat Shaikh رحمة الله عليه would advice the ‘Hu” of Six Tasbeehat of Allahu Allah to be read as MajhoolHo’ of urdu. if there is no waswasa then it is to be read as ‘Hu’ that is commonly read.

5. At our Hazrat.. illness and journey falls under an excuse to either reduce or withhold the Zikr or compromise with the prerequisites. While in illness even if the tongue doesn’t move.. it is relatively easy to fix one's thought towards Allah سبحانه وتعالى which in reality is the actual Zikr..

And worldly preoccupation is not an excuse such that one can never be freed from it. While engaged in business don’t they find time to eat food.. they could even drop a meal and find time..
The way food nourishes the body.. similarly Zikr provides sustenance to the soul…

Tera hi dil na chahe to baaten hazaar hain..

If your heart doesn’t desire ..then a thousand excuses could be spread..
