Temple Mount closed to visitors 2nd time in week after Palestinians, police clash
Published time: November 05, 2014 07:04
Edited time: November 05, 2014 07:39

Israeli police have again closed access to the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem to Palestinian worshipers as clashes continue in the heart of the city. It comes a day after an Israeli minister said the mosque would be replaced with a Jewish temple.

The holy site has been a focus of tension since last week, when Israel closed it to Muslim worshipers.

Al-Aqsa, also known as the Temple Mount, is Islam’s third most-venerated site.

Israeli police closed it for the first time since 1963 in retaliation for the killing of a prominent right-wing Jewish activist, provoking outcry from the Arab population.

Access was renewed a day later, but males under 50 were still banned from entry.

Shin Bet thwarts operation to bomb Al-Aqsa

Friday, 09 January 2015

The Israeli intelligence service Shin Bet have thwarted an operation to blow up the Dome of the Rock Mosque, in the Al-Aqsa compound, by an American Jewish extremist, Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper revealed today.

According to the paper, Adam Everett Livvix, a Christian who is wanted in the United States for questioning on drug-related charges, was charged by the Netanya Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for illegal possession of arms and for outstaying his visa.

Shin Bet arrested the 30-year-old on November 19. He tried to evade capture by jumping out of his seventh floor window and was apprehended on the balcony beneath.

According to the indictment, Livvix had told his acquaintances "about his negative opinions toward the Arab population in Israel and his desire to cause harm to Islamic holy sites in Israel through the use of explosive devices."

Livvix was found in possession of weapons, ammunition and explosives kept in a storage shed next to his flat in Tel Aviv. His accomplice and flatmate, an Israeli soldier who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also arrested.

The soldier is accused of supplying Livvix with the means of combat and explosives stolen from the military base where he served. These included 1.4 kilogrammes of explosive bricks, six stun grenades as well as tear gas canisters and smoke grenades.

He supplied Livvix with an explosive brick and the grenades in exchange for 2,500 shekels ($634). However, he was only paid a down payment of 500 shekels ($127), the indictment states.

During questioning, Livvix admitted to being involved in various fraud schemes, as well as the initial stages of planning terror attacks on Islamic holy sites in Israel.

According to the Shin Bet, Livvix, while living in the occupied West Bank prior to his arrest, was approached about assassinating US President Barack Obama during his visit to Israel, though the suspect refused to take part in the plan.

Livvix is reported to have arrived in Israel on March 7, 2013, as a tourist, and outstaying his visa. (Middle East Monitor)

Netanyahu bars Jewish politicians from al-Aqsa compound

Israeli prime minister has ordered police to prevent ministers and legislators from visiting holy Jerusalem site.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered police to prevent government ministers and Knesset members from entering al-Aqsa Mosque compound, according to Israeli media.

Clashes have rocked the Jerusalem site in recent weeks amid a surge in tensions between Israelis and Palestinians.

The Haaretz newspaper quoted an official as saying that the prime minister gave his directive during a security consultation last week and has not yet formally informed the cabinet ministers of his directive.

Muslim Knesset members will still be allowed to access the mosque.

Some Jewish politicians have visited the site in recent weeks, including Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel, who has come out in support of the right of Jews to pray in the compound.

Jews and non-Muslims can visit the site but are banned from praying there.

The al-Aqsa compound is the third-holiest site in Islam. It is located in East Jerusalem, which Israel annexed in 1967 - in a move never recognised by the international community - as part of its occupation of the West Bank.

US concern

The White House expressed deep concern on Wednesday about the escalating violence in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem and urged Israelis and Palestinians to restore calm.

"The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms violence against Israelis and Palestinian civilians," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said at a news briefing.

"We call upon all parties to take affirmative steps to restore calm and refrain from actions and rhetoric that would further inflame tensions in that region of the world."

Palestinians clashed with Israeli forces across the West Bank on Wednesday, including in Jericho, Bethlehem, Hebron and Ramallah, where students of Birzeit University had called for a "Day of Rage".

Several Palestinians were seriously wounded by Israeli fire, just hours after two stabbing incidents in East Jerusalem and the Israeli city of Kiryat Gan.

The Red Crescent and the Palestinian health ministry say more than 1,600 Palestinians have been injured since October 3 as Israeli forces have used live ammunition and rubber-coated steel bullets to push back protesters.
