Irony of Tearing Pages: “Why Israel?” and MRN’s Advocacy Role

Advocacy for justice and human rights defines the role of a multitude of social movements across the world.StoptheBDS

It has purpose and follows rigorous process in addition to creating networks and sustainable partnerships sharing common goals.

Methods may differ amongst various formations which constitute a vibrant kaleidoscope of organisations, while the theme under which they agitate retains a common bond.

As an advocacy ngo, the Media Review Network or MRN as its known in South Africa and in some regions of the world, shares and embodies these noble interests.

As a forerunner in the arena of contesting Islamophobia, the MRN has made and continues to make a unique contribution.

Side by side with the challenge of unpacking an understanding of contemporary origins of Islamophobia, the MRN has positioned Israel at the core of it.

A key architect of this modern day phenomenon that conflates resistance to its apartheid policies with Islamophobia is Benjamin Netanyahu.

Research undertaken by MRN spanning a decade or more, provides conclusive evidence that Israel’s role as an active initiator and perpetrator of deceptive propaganda has been instrumental in the  unleashing of many brutal campaigns targeting Muslims.

pic 2

Whether its the “War on Terror” by America and NATO allies or the banning of hijabs and minarets in Europe, Israel’s highly resourced Islamophobia industry is its political base.

Challenging and creating public debates on the twin evils of Apartheid Israel and Islamophobia has attracted immense hostility from South Africa’s pro-Israel lobbyists.

From being described as their “nemesis” to regularly being subjected to a chorus of rhetorical slander such as being “antisemites” and “holocaust deniers”, the MRN has remained dedicated to its advocacy and networking goals.

An important component in advancing it’s mission has been commissioning academic studies.

One such significant accomplishment has been the publication of “Apartheid Israel” in partnership with British publisher Zed Books.

Its author is the well known Israeli sociologist and human rights activist Uri Davis.

MRN’s alliance with Davis predates the publication and 9/11. He was invited to South Africa as guest of MRN during the 2001 Racism Conference in Durban and not surprisingly played a central role in developing crucial outcomes that placed international spotlight back on the “Zionism is Racism” debate.pic 4

During the 2002 Sustainable Development Conference held in Johannesburg, Davis yet again played a pivotal role alongside social movements in leading protest marches and articulating aspirations of the world’s marginalised.

A number of crucial Davis-inspired debates entered public space and amongst them two stand out: the deceipt of the Jewish National Fund and the need for strident opposition to the colonial settler regime.

Remarkably yet not without surprise,  persons with struggle pedigrees such as Ronnie Kasrils were immediately attracted to Uri Davis’ profound arguments that being Jewish or Israeli doesn’t bar you from acknowledging and pic 3opposing Israeli Apartheid.

This moment marked an era which commenced the emergence of Jewish voices led by Kasrils, who at the time was a senior Minister in Nelson Mandela’s cabinet, to demand “Not In My Name”.

For the first time in the annals of Jewish support for Israel, South Africa witnessed major cracks in the dominant pro-Israel lobby that hitherto monopolised Jewish voices as representative of unconditional supporters of the zionist project.

More recently, MRN researcher Suraya Dadoo and senior executive member Firoz Osman embarked on an ambitious project which culminated in a highly acclaimed study known as “Why Israel”.

Its a detailed and comprehensive book dealing with MRN’s twin concerns: Islamophobia and Israel.

Judging from the many rave reviews by historians, academics, human rights activists, media, including Palestinian voices, this publication has been a crucial component in mobilising public opinion critical of Israel’s racist ideology.

As Israel keeps pounding Gaza with bombs and missiles extracting huge civilian death tolls, South Africans of all stripes have taken to the streets to protest their outrage against the savagery of Netanyahu’s war crimes.

Indeed in what has been described as the country’s largest mass protest since the dawn of democracy twenty years ago, Cape Town was brought to a standstill as 200000 and more demanded an end to Israel’s bloody massacres.

MRN is a component of the new grassroots formation embracing close to fifty organisations from churches to trade unions and  known as “National Coalition For Palestine”.

The sudden rush to gain insight on Palestine has been characterised by a spike in demand for “Why Israel”.

In addition highy respected Israeli authors and historians have made a huge impact on people’s ability to understand that the canard of “antisemitism” is no more than a decoy used to discourage pro-Palestinian activism.

Two such remarkable individuals who graced the shores of South Africa have been author of “The General’s Son” Miko Peled and author of “Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine” Ilan Pappe.

Suddenly a renewed energy to embrace Palestine’s freedom struggle by embarking on a full fledged campaign to adopt Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, BDS, as an empowering tool is evident throughout the country.

MRN plays a central role in these endeavours and its strategic assets which include a dynamic young leadership headed by Zaakir Ahmed Mayet and Aayesha Soni, complemented by research structures headed by veteran scholar Ibrahim Vawda, and the powerful wide network of activists positions it strategically.

Recent reports that “Why Israel”, which incidentally is marketed via all leading bookstores, was found mutilated with pages torn in a CNA store at the Sandton branch, is ironically testament of MRN’s effective advocacy and the hatred it arouses amongst intolerant zionist zealots.

Time to speak up against the Muslim betrayers of Gaza

Ebrahim Moosa – Cii News | 28 August 2014/02 Dhul Qa’dah 1435

The Egyptian regime role in the siege of the Palestinians in Gaza is an oft-neglected dimension of the suffering of the Palestinians and urgently needs to be addressed by Muslims, Cii Radio has heard.

Describing the response of solidarity activists as possibly tantamount to a double standard, scholar and author Moulana Sulaymaan Kindi told Ulama In Focus that Gaza was not only hemmed in by Israel but also by a ‘Muslim’ country, Egypt.

“How utterly shameful that a so-called Sunni Muslim country is part of the siege against the Palestinians that food, supplies, medicine is not reaching these people – innocent women and children, civilians – not because of a Zionist siege on Gaza, but because Sisi’s Egyptians have blockaded Gaza,” he said.

Kindi opined that Saudi Arabia bore a direct responsibility for this state of affairs due to its bankrolling of the oppressive Egyptian regime.

“Who put Sisi in power?” he asked. “Who has donated 20 billion US dollars to organise the coup that removed a pious Muslim Mohammed Morsi?”

Kindi drew attention to a series of  “disgusting and nauseating” recent pronouncements relating to Gaza emanating from the Saudi royals.

“King Abdullah made a public statement of August 1 that the massacre in Gaza was caused by Hamas. Non Muslims, Jews have shed tears – even gone in the streets condemning the massacre of the Palestinians – and this man, ruler of the Haramain, can blame Hamas?” he asked in disdain.

He further slated the Saudi monarch for endowing a medal of honour to the Egyptian strongman, even while Gaza was being relentlessly bombed.

“A medal of honour for laying siege to Muslims?”

Kindi said Muslim activists would often cite sentiments from Western politicians of the ilk of Madeline Albright(regarding the genocide in Iraq) as evidence of callousness, but inadvertently turn a blind eye to those Muslims who are part of the nexus.

“Which country allowed the siege of Iraq and allowed half a million Muslim children to starve – the same Saudi family which takes its orders from America.”

He said efforts to isolate and boycott Israeli supporting entities in South Africa and worldwide should be commended, but other parties complicit in the oppression of Palestinians should be punished too.

“Why does nobody mention our Muslim brothers laying siege to Gaza, and the Muslim Saudis sponsoring to the tune of 20 billion US dollars to help massacre the Palestinians. This is a double standard..why do we keep quiet on one wrong, and we go all out on others? This is a wrong that can be rectified.”

Kindi added the Saudi regime only existed because of the goodwill and quiet of Muslim organisations and individuals who take finance and “free Hajj tickets” from the royals.

“A little pressure Insha Allah can go a long way to reforming them or removing them,” he said. “But silence is simply not the answer”

Palestinians banned from riding same buses as Israelis

Palestinians in the West Bank who commute to Israel to work will from Wednesday be banned from riding the same buses as Israelis to return home, a defence ministry official said.

"Under a three-month pilot project, Palestinians who work in Israel will, starting Wednesday, need to return home by the same crossing without taking buses used by (Israeli) residents" of the occupied West Bank, the official told AFP.

Hundreds of Palestinians travel each day to work in Israel from the occupied West Bank, mainly in the construction business, using travel permits each time they cross.

The official, who declined to be named, said Palestinian workers would now need to change buses to avoid riding vehicles carrying Israelis after crossing back into the West Bank.

Israeli public radio said Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon had agreed to the ban, adding that it would allow "better control of the Palestinians and those leaving Israel and reduce security risks".

Israeli settlers in the West Bank have called for years for Palestinians to be banned from public transport there, arguing their presence poses a security risk.

We should try and improve our moral and spiritual condition.
We have to start implementing the Shariah on our own selves and our immediate family, no state is needed for that.
Ramadan is coming we have to inculcate Taqwa in our selves and help our family towards it.
100 years can pass and billions in aid can be given (note i'm not saying don't give aid) but the main problem is our moral and spiritual condition.
Do at least 1000x Istighfar daily with the thought that my sins are the reason for the suffering for the Ummah.

Israel is not the real enemy. We are the enemy of our selves.

A YAHUDI’S NASEEHAT

(An EXTRACT from a discourse by Hadhrat Qaari Muhammad Tayyib, the former Principal of Daarul Uloom Deoband)

“I remember a very interesting incident. Maulana Salim Sahib (Rahimahullah) was living in Makkah Mukarramah. During the Zionist Revolution the Jews had taken control of some areas of Egypt and of Masjid al Aqsa as well. He narrated an incident of a person that came from Egypt when Gaza was taken over by the Jews.

The Muslims fled from there to Egypt to save their lives and honour. A poor old scholar also left with his wife. They had no conveyance, so they travelled on foot, struggling for 30 to 40 kilometres to Al Arīsh. From there, the border of Egypt was closed. The Jews then captured him.

From the opposite side, a Jeep of one of the Jewish commanders was coming. The scholar was holding the hands of his children. The commander had took pity on him due to his old age.

He stopped his Jeep and asked, “Who are you?” He said his name. “Where do you want to go?” He replied, “Cairo.” “Why?” “There is unrest here.” The commander said, “Have you no transport?” The old scholar replied, “No, I do not have transport. There was a revolution and the Jews took control.” The Jewish commander said, “I pity your old age. Sit in my car; I shall take you to the border. Where will you take your wife and weak children? It is forty miles from here.”

At first, the old scholar was apprehensive, fearing that this person had ill designs for him and his family. The commander then assured him of safety. “Please be convinced, I shall take you there.” He took the family to an Egyptian camp which the Jews had taken control of.

The commander took him to a tent, left him there saying, “Rest for a while. Rest, I shall bring food. You eat, and then I shall take you.”

He made the old man sit on a sofa, while the commander sat on the ground. The commander said, “You should be aware of Umar (radhiyallahu anhu)?” The old man said, “What! He is a Sahabi and a great Khalifah of Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam).” The commander said, “Can you mention some of his qualities?” The old man replied, “Yes.” He then began to mention the virtues, status, and perfection of Sayyidunā Umar (radhiyallahu anhu).

After attentively listening, the Jewish commander said, “Are these the qualities of Umar (radhiyallahu anhu)?” He said, “Yes.” The commander said, “When these qualities were in the Muslims, then we, the Jews, were in subjugation at their feet. What is your condition today? The room that I have seated you in, it is the room of an Egyptian Lieutenant. Yesterday, twenty five soldiers were under him. This is his tent. Bottles of liquor are lined in it. There are couches here. Lawful women (wives) and unlawful women (prostitutes) were with him. Yet he came to fight the Jews. So why should the Jews not overpower and defeat him? When the qualities of Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) were present, the Jews were beneath your feet. Why are you grieving?”

The scholar was now silent. What answer should he give? It is reality. The commander said: “I only wanted to show you this (i.e.. the immoral condition of the Muslim army). Now come, I shall take you.” He took the scholar in his Jeep and left him at the border of Cairo. The scholar thanked him. The commander said, “We do not oppose your religion, we oppose you people. You do not follow your religion or our religion. You indulge in liquor, immorality and amusement, so why should we not fight you? Why should we not assert control over you?”

Probably you do not know that our enemies live next to you.
Doron Biran (Boaran) - a former fighter of the special force Israel army, which is directly subordinate to the General Staff of the Israeli army.
He destroyed many of our brothers. During one of the actions in 1992, he tortured a child to make his father talk!
The child has lost both eyes. He demobilized from the army, changed his last name from Boaron to Biran and fled to Europe to avoid responsibility for this crime. He also slightly changed the public version of his biography: he presents himself so that he served in the Israeli army from 1984 to 1988, although in fact from 1984 to 1992.
His address: Chalet Valentine B411, Route De Verbier, Verbier 1936
