Muslim patients risk receiving pig or other animal bone in dental implants without knowing, report warns

Muslim dental patients in Britain could be receiving bone grafts derived from pigs, cows or other animals without being clearly told what is being put into their bodies, a new report has warned.

The Bone Truths report says animal-derived bone is the most commonly used type of dental bone graft in the UK and globally, but many patients are not adequately informed about the origin of the material or the alternatives available to them.

Bone grafts are commonly required before dental implants when a patient does not have enough healthy jawbone to support the implant. The graft rebuilds or strengthens the jaw so that an artificial tooth can be securely fitted.

But what many patients may not realise is that the material used to rebuild their jaw can come from several sources — including their own bone, a deceased human donor, synthetic material or animals.

Animal-derived grafts, known as xenografts, usually come from cows but can also be derived from pigs or horses, according to the report. Independent dental practitioners also publicly describe cow-bone xenografts and human-donor allografts as materials used in implant grafting.

google translation of urdu fatwah:

The dry bones of slaughtered or non-slaughtered animals (even those whose meat is not consumed) are ritually pure. If bone powder is used in the manufacture of vessels, it is permissible to purchase and use such vessels; this is because, according to the rulings of jurists, animal bones are pure and deriving benefit from them is permissible, even if they originate from an animal that died a natural death (without ritual slaughter).

However, both humans and swine are exceptions to this ruling—humans due to the honor and dignity accorded to them, and swine because they are inherently impure (*najis al-ayn*). It is not permissible to derive any benefit from any part of the pig, including its bones. Therefore, if pig bone powder is used in the manufacture of utensils—and this fact is established through investigation rather than mere suspicion—then purchasing and using such utensils is not permissible.

The concern is the use of pig!

There is an alternative if one is not sure which animal it has been derived from

An alloplast bone graft in UK dentistry is a completely synthetic, laboratory-created bone substitute—typically made from calcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite, or bioactive glass—used to rebuild or reinforce jawbone density before dental implant placement.

How Alloplasts
WorkComposition: 100% man-made with zero human (allograft) or animal (xenograft) origin.Mechanism: Acts as a biocompatible scaffold or framework that encourages your body's natural bone cells (osteoblasts) to grow and fill the void.

Application:
Frequently used for minor socket preservation, ridge augmentations, or small-to-medium bone defects.Advantages & ConsiderationsEthical/Dietary Compatibility: Ideal for patients who decline human or animal tissues due to personal, ethical, or religious reasons.

Zero Disease Transmission
Risk: Completely eliminates any risk of pathogen transfer from donors or animals.Integration

What Is Bone Grafting? Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that adds volume and density to your jaw to repair areas where bone loss has occurred.

This article makes no sense!

There are no organic compounds in abutment, implant type or crown 99.99999% of the times. It is possible maybe in some rare case.

I will write about this later if someone has any questions, otherwise trust me.

I think this article may be talking about bone graft which doesn't apply to most ordinary people

Very important topic. I don't know about UK but here in Pakistan no one bothers telling patients from where the bone graft or the membrane is sourced from. And patients generally lack awareness so they don't ask either. I think these things should be kept transparent and informed consent should be taken before attempting any procedures.

This is impossible and the headline and first paragraph contradict each other.

The article above is sensational British Tabloid journalism and it is about bone graft and not implants, although many implants may require a bone graft.

This article is creating sensationalism as Dentists do offer choice of bone graft material to the patient and when a patient is offered Xenografts (Animal-Derived) bone graft which is the cheapest then it should be dead obvious to a Patient that the material is likely to be suspect (in the West), its common sense.

Majority of Muslims know while shopping that if a food item has animal ingredients you don't buy it.

So if a Dentist is telling you that your bone graft is Xenografts (Animal-Derived) bone graft manufactured in Switzerland by Geistlich Pharma and you are happy to put it in your mouth then you need to believe in the Tooth Fairy!

Back to the topic...The Dentist does tell you the type and that's enough

I don't know who this "Dr Mohsin Ali" is but he also doesn't mention membrane which may be a bigger issue because a patient can opt for a Alloplasts (Synthetic/Laboratory-Made) graft but Dentist may use a Resorbable Collagen Membrane (RCM).

All in all, typical British sensationalism with half cooked information leaving people to go Fatwa hunting instead of calmly reading and realizing that its a badly written article!

As far as Pakistan is concerned then the Fatwa for Xenografts (Animal-Derived) bone graft OR Resorbable Collagen Membrane (RCM) manufactured in Pakistan or Turkiye or any other Muslim country may be Halal by default.

You're right that the bigger issue is membrane. And unfortunately this stuff is not manufactured in Pakistan, I don't know why and it's a big disappointment that we have to import each and everything for basic procedures as well.

As dentists we also use synthetic bone in our practice to avoid such issues and bovine membranes regarding which we should research if the animal was slaughtered according to Islamic principles or not but no one wants to bother about it.

is it permissible to transplant the bone of a forbidden animal into a human bone?

Answer: In the name of the One who inspires good deeds

There is a possibility of transplanting the bone of a forbidden or dead animal, except for pigs, into a human bone. This is because the parts in which life does not exist, such as bones, nails, and hair, are not impure, but are considered pure. Whereas the bone of a pig is impure, so it is not permissible to transplant it. However, if there is no halal alternative and there is a strong fear of the patient losing his life or any organ, and there is no other treatment, then there is a possibility of transplanting the bone of a pig.

Note: It is better to use the bones of halal animals than those of haram animals.

You are clearly a Dentist and know what you are talking out, ماشاء الله

This is standard Hanafi position, please insert a link for source.

The bone isn't really the bigger issue in these scenarios.

5pillars had its place when social media wasn't big but now its just become a click bait. It's co-founder, dilly hussain is now a Executive editor at One Nation Media in south africa. The other co-founder, roshan salih used to work for the iranian presstv so its influence has rubbed off on him.

Back to the dental bone graft, vegetarianism and veganism lobby is influential so I doubt dentists are getting away without informing their patients about animal derivatives in their products.
