Sri Lanka to ban burqa and close 1,000 Islamic schools

Minister cites national security for decision, saying garments are ‘sign of religious extremism’

Sat 13 Mar 2021

Sri Lanka has announced plans to ban the wearing of burqas and said it would close more than 1,000 Islamic schools known as madrassas, citing national security.

The minister of public security, Sarath Weerasekara, said he had signed a paper on Friday seeking the approval of the cabinet of ministers to ban burkas – outer garments that cover the body and face worn by some Muslim women.

“The burqa has a direct impact on national security,” Weerasekara told a ceremony at a Buddhist temple on Saturday. “In our early days, we had a lot of Muslim friends, but Muslim women and girls never wore the burqa,” Weerasekara said, according to video footage sent by his ministry. “It is a sign of religious extremism that came about recently. We will definitely ban it.”

The wearing of burqas was temporarily banned in 2019 after the Easter Sunday bomb attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka that killed more than 260 people. Two local Muslim groups that had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group have been blamed for the attacks at six locations – two Roman Catholic churches, one Protestant church and three top hotels.

Weerasekara also said the government will ban more than 1,000 madrassas, saying they are not registered with the authorities and do not follow the national education policy.

The decision to ban burqas and madrassas is the latest move affecting the Indian Ocean island nation’s minority Muslims.

Muslims make up about 9% of the 22 million people in Sri Lanka, where Buddhists account for more than 70% of the population. Ethnic minority Tamils, who are mainly Hindus, comprise about 15% of the population

Got used to this.

We were silent when muslims like Umer Sharif openly insulted Islam in his Urdu dramas. Burqa, jannat, jahannam, tajweed, moulvis, halal, haram, our culture,.... every drama has something to mock and make fun of Islam. So with what face can we complain. We were silent with our own people.

Sardars have strong political lobbies.
We muslims have leaders like MBS and MBZ who actively support. The oppression of muslims. They supported Indias policy against Muslims have supported Israels policies in Palestine. Openly support Chinas policies in East Turkistan. The U.A.E. even provided loans to the anti-muslim National Front in France.

Would they dare do this if the Muslim rulers threatened economic sanctions and consequences for these actions.?

You are right. Thank you for correcting me.

Things are changing rapidly in India too, and Muslims in some areas are beginning to face similar challenges.

-Ban of the Burqa : 1st sin done by France, aka the imam of kufr in this regard. All other countries had the guts to do it once the "country of liberty (sic)" did it. More countries will follow.
-Banning and closure of madaris/schools : following the steps of the chinese, nobody stepped up for Uyghurs, nobody will stand up for Sri Lankans, just like Pakistanis will stand up for kashmiris but not for uyghurs and then cry.
Everybody only sees its own interests, thus weakening everybody.

Then again the awaited mahdi will emerge once we are humiliated everywhere, everybody shall dream of a submitting to a leader, which cannot happen now because every nation is too arrogant to support a unifying leader.

In the Indian state of Assam more than 700 state-run madrasas will be shut down, affecting 98,000 students, of whom nearly half are girls.

There is a message for muslims where Burqa is allowed.

The Islam haters hate Burqa. They hate the sunnah and shariah of Rasulullah Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, it hurts them when see a muslimah in burqa. What more evidence is required that Burqa is from sunnah and shariah of Rasulullah Sallalahu alayhi wa sallam.

They hate madrasah, implies, madrasahs are guarding the fort of deen.
