Petition against East Ham school’s hijab ban for under 8s gets 8,000 signatures in two days

There has been a strong backlash against the school’s bold stance on the issue.

In a Sunday Times article this weekend, the school’s headteacher Neena Lall told the newspaper the changes had been made to help integrate children into British society.

“Freedom of expression is a must regardless of age,” it says on the petition’s webpage, which was started by Hafsah Dabiri.

“The hijab represents a choice and to remove it is the very oppression which actors claim to prevent,” it adds.

“It’s not a request or a plea, it’s a demand.”

The school’s policy is against the UN Convention on Human Rights, it adds.

In the interview she said that a few years ago she asked the children to put their hands up if they thought they were British. “Very few” said they did.

Neena Lall, the headteacher of St Stephen Primay school in Newham has just announced that they will be banning the hijab and fasting for their students at school.

They have placed in the uniform policy, restrictions on the age which children can wear the hijab (currently 8 years old) but this sets precedent for further and harsher religious regulation.

They have also called upon the Department of Education to play a larger role in the creation of stricter regulations applicatable to all schools regarding these areas.

Freedom of expression is a must regardless of age.

The UN convention on the Rights of Children:

Article 14

1. States Parties shall respect the right of the child to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.

2. States Parties shall respect the rights and duties of the parents and, when applicable, legal guardians, to provide direction to the child in the exercise of his or her right in a manner consistent with the evolving capacities of the child.

3. Freedom to manifest one's religion or beliefs may be subject only to such limitations as are prescribed by law and are necessary to protect public safety, order, health or morals, or the fundamental rights and freedoms of others.

#LeaveourHijab

It’s not yours to regulate, dictate, discuss or limit.
Religious expression that does not encroach on your freedom and does not require your permission or allowance.

If we allow them to take this step towards regulating the hijab, the cycle will not end and we will regress towards a society which does not allow diversity, inclusion and individuality.

The hijab represents a choice and to remove it is the very oppression which actors claim to prevent.
We cannot and will not stand for this and for that reason to Neena Lall, we say Leave our Hijab!

It’s not a request or a plea, it’s demand.

So that individuality, personal choice, heritage, culture and expression remain free and unregulated within the education system.

Taking this step towards limiting the hijab is the first step towards the regulation of freedom in the UK and we shouldn’t allow it to happen!

Sikh boys are allowed to wear their Turban's due to religious beliefs?

www.st-stephens-primary.org.uk/classes/class-2SH/ A Sikh child can wear his turban but Muslim girls cannot wear the Hijab because Ms Neena Lall states, "The hijab ban is to help integrate Muslim children into modern British society...."

iv noticed its always the munafiq who cause us the most harm. inshAllah this ban wont go through we must all do whatever is neccessary to stop it but it if it does surely this is a sign our days in UK is numbered. once hijab goes it be beards, jubbah, fajr/esha salah, jummah. they are just testing the waters and seeing what they can get away with

InshaAllah not gonna happen :)

Maybe for younger girls (and Sikh boys) there maybe rules where they may say that the child is too young to decide for themslevs and then take it from there, but the other things you mentioned, inshaAllah will not happen. That's one of the good things of this country.

They need us :)

East London primary school backs down over hijab ban

A primary school that controversially banned pupils from wearing hijabs appears to have backed down after the chair of governors announced his resignation following complaints from parents.

explicit language reader discretion is advised

This is how the chair of governors at St Stephens school in Newham referred to the local imam in an email to the headteacher. The same school that recently imposed a hijab ban.

To name call is unnecessary. There are always diplomatic ways to deal with such people. As proved in this matter. Threats and indecent language isn’t always the best way forward.
