i saw a few mins of a doc on bbc4 other day about art in islam. they said historically islam has always had depictions of humans but only in recent years it seems to have become a taboo.
i accept hadith, sahaba, salaf and majority of the ulema of islam from day 1 have all prohibited it but there are many art works from the early muslims and some are inappropriate. they showed palaces of old khalifahs/govoners with naked women and stuff painted on ceilings.
did any scholars of the past allow pictures? you get so called portraites of people like rumi رضي الله عنه and other saints. are they legit?
also there are old depicitins of majlis's and people perform hajj/tawaf dated 100s of yrs ago.
who made them and how where they allowed/justified?
i agree 100% thats what i feel too but its just when you see so called pictures of famous sunni scholars/saints. how did they come about? did they give permission? where they real portraits? or were they drawn many years later and how people think they looked
