It came out in court during his initial trial in 2016, that he had been working with MI6 for years and the intelligence service for over two decades blocked the police from arresting him. And half the evidence was presented in secret during that trial.
It seems he still believed he had immunity, to carry on with his actions. This present trial is as a result of an American investigation.
