al-Ma'roor رحمه الله narrates: "We accompanied 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه on pilgrimage. On the way we encountered a masjid, and the people immediately hurried to it. 'Umar رضي الله عنه asked: 'What masjid is this?' Thay answered: 'The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم prayed in this masjid.' 'Umar رضي الله عنه said, 'This was exactly what caused the destruction of the People of the Book prior to you. They held their Prophets' monuments as sacred places of worship. Whoever has yet to perform prayer may pray, whoever has already done so should leave.'" [Seeratul Khulafaa ar-Rashideen]
It is related that a man came to meet Sayyiduna 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه and said, "O Ameerul Mu'mineen! When we conquered al-Madaa'in, I came across a book wherein I read wondrous words"
Sayyiduna 'Umar رضي الله عنه asked, "Are they from the Qur'an?"
The man replied, "No."
Sayyiduna 'Umar رضي الله عنه thereupon asked for his dirah (stick) to be fetched and he fell to beating the man. He then read out Allaah's سبحانه و تعالى words:
"Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book. Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran in order that you may understand. We relate unto you (Muhammad SAW) the best of stories through Our Revelations unto you, of this Quran. And before this, you were among those who knew nothing about it."[12:1-3]
Then Sayyiduna 'Umar said, "What brought about the downfall of nations prior to you was their turning to the books of their scholars and priests, leaving behind the Torah and the Injeel, till they decayed, and the knowledge they encompassed was gone." (Reported by Ibn al-Jawzi)
It is reported that 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه said: "Allaah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم commanded us to give out charity (sadaqah) and I was in possession of some wealth then. I thought: 'Today I will outdo Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه.'
So I brought half of my wealth. Allaah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم asked me, "What have you left for your family?" I answered, "Just as much (as I have given out)." Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه brought all the wealth he possessed. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم asked him, "What have you left for your family?" He replied, "Allaah and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم." I thought, 'There is no way I can outdo him in anything.' [Seeratul Khulafaa ar-Rashideen]
al-A'mash رحمه الله states: I was once at 'Umar's. He brought twenty two thousand dirhams, and did not leave until he had given them all away. Whenever he liked any of the things he owned, he gave them away. Sayyiduna 'Umar رضي الله عنه frequently gave away sugar. When he was asked why he did so, he answered: "Because I love it, and Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says,
"By no means shall you attain Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, etc., it means here Allah's Reward, i.e. Paradise), unless you spend (in Allah's Cause) of that which you love; and whatever of good you spend, Allah knows it well."(3:92)
Mujahid رحمه الله states: "'Umar Ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه once to wrote to Abu Musa al-Ash'ari رضي الله عنه asking him to buy him a bondwoman from the captives of the Galoula' battle. Abu Musa رضي الله عنه did so. Then 'Umar رضي الله عنه called her and set her free, and recited the verse:

Aslam رحمه الله narrated: "Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما asked me about some matters concerning 'Umar رضي الله عنه. He said, 'Since Allah's Messenger died, I have never seen anybody more serious, hard working and generous than 'Umar رضي الله عنه (till the end of his life)." (Bukhari)
In al-Fat-h, al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani رحمه الله explains: "No one was firmer in handling matters, or more generous in giving away money, than 'Umar رضي الله عنه. This applies to a specific period of time, namely, the time of his caliphate, so as exclude the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq رضي الله عنه from that."
Ameerul Mu'mineen Hadrat 'Umar رضي الله عنه narrates:
"I asked the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم for permission to perform 'Umrah and he gave me permission saying, 'Dear brother, include us in your supplications and do not forget us.' This expression ('dear brother') that he said, I would not be willing to exchange it for the world." (Abu Dawud; at-Tirmidhi)
Ukhayy is the diminutive form of akh. It means little brother and is used to express love. That is why Sayyidna 'Umar رضي الله عنه considered this expression from the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم mouth more valuable than the whole world. (The Accepted Whispers)
Hadrat 'Umar رضي الله عنه Reproaches Someone Who Insulted Hadrat 'Ali رضي الله عنه
Hadhrat Urwa رضي الله عنه narrates that someone once insulted Hadhrat Ali رضي الله عنه in the presence of Hadhrat 'Umar رضي الله عنه. Hadhrat Umar رضي الله عنه said, "Do you know the occupant of this grave? He is Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم , the son of 'Abdullah, who was the son of 'Abdul Muttalib. 'Ali is the son of Abu Taalib who was also the son of 'Abdul Muttalib. You should therefore only speak good of 'Ali because if you hurt 'Ali, you will be hurting the one in this grave صلى الله عليه وسلم ."
