Hadrat Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) said, "Even since the demise of Allaah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم), I have not seen anyone firmer in faith or more generous than 'Umar (رضي الله عنه)." (Ibn Sa'd)
Hadrat Ibn Mas'ood (رضي الله عنه) said, "If 'Umar's knowledge (رضي الله عنه) was placed on one of the scales of the balance, and the knowledge of all the people in the other, his would outweigh theirs. He was believed to possess nine tenths of knowledge." (at-Tabarani and al-Hakim)
Hadrat Hudhayfah (رضي الله عنه) mentions, "Never have I known a man to fear no one in abiding by Allaah's laws except 'Umar (رضي الله عنه)." (Seeratul Khulafaa' ar-Rashideen رضي الله عنهم أجمعين)
Hadrat Ameer Mu'aawiya (رضي الله عنه) states, "Life offered Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) no temptations and he never sought worldly pleasures either, whereas life did offer 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) temptations, yet he never yielded to them. We, on the other hand, have been soaked in worldly temptations." (Reported by az-Zubayr Ibn Bakkaar)
Hadrat Ibn Mas'ood (رضي الله عنه) said, "'Umar Ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) outdid people in four things;
When he thought the captives of the battle of Badr should be killed, then Allaah (سبحانه و تعالى) revealed His words:
"Were it not a previous ordainment from Allah, a severe torment would have touched you for what you took." (8:68)
Concerning the veil, he ordered the Prophet's (صلى الله عليه وسلم) Wives (رضى الله عنهنّ) to stay in their houses. So Ummul Mu'mineen Zaynab رضي الله عنها told him, 'O Ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه), would you force us to obey your orders when Allaah's (سبحانه و تعالى) Revelations comes down in our houses?"
Then Allaah (سبحانه و تعالى) revealed the following verse:
"And when you ask (his wives) for anything you want, ask them from behind a screen, that is purer for your hearts and for their hearts." (33:53)
Thirdly, he did when the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) prayed, "O Allaah (سبحانه و تعالى), strengthen Islam with 'Umar (رضي الله عنه)."
Finally, Umar (رضي الله عنه) outdid people on account of his opinion of Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq (رضي الله عنه), for he was the first to pledge allegiance to him."
Hadrat Mujahid (رحمه الله) reports: "We were told that the shayateen (devils) were shackled during 'Umar's (رضي الله عنه) caliphate. They were not released until he was stabbed (رضي الله عنه)." (Seeratul Khulafaa' ar-Rashideen رضي الله عنهم أجمعين)
Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) is reported to have said: "'Umar (رضي الله عنه) sent out an army, at the helm of which was a man called Saariyah (رضي الله عنه). While 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) was delivering a sermon, he called out three times, 'O Saariyah, seek the protection of the mount!'
When the messenger of the army arrived, 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) asked him about the battle. The messenger answer: 'O Ameerul Mu'mineen, we were about to be defeated. At that point, we heard a voice call out three times, 'O Saariyah, seek the protection of the mount!' So we assumed our positions in front of the mountain and Allaah granted us victory.'
'Umar (رضي الله عنه) was told, 'You really did cry so, though the mountan that Saariyah was stationed by was all the way in Nahawand, in the land of the non-Mislums.'" (al-Bayhaqi and Abu Na'eem)
Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) further reports: "'Umar (رضي الله عنه) was delivering the Jumu'ah Khutbah (Friday Sermon), when he interrupted it saying: 'O Saariyah, seek the protection of the mount. If you are to ask the wolf to be your shepherd, you are at fault.' People looked at each other in astonishment. Hadrat 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) told them: 'Wait till he explains to you.'
When Hadrat 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) finished the sermon, he was asked about his digression. He said, 'It occurred to me that the disbelievers have defeated our army who were then by a mountain. Should they use it to cover their backs, they would fight in only one direction. Otherwise, they would be conquered. That is why I uttered the words you claim to have heard.'
The messenger of the army arrived a month later and mentioned that they had heard Hadrat 'Umar's (رضي الله عنه) voice that day, sought the protection of the mountain and were indeed victorious." [Reported by Ibn Maduwayh]
Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) also mentions: "'Umar (رضي الله عنه) asked a man, 'What is your name?' The man answered, 'Jamrah (glowing embers).'
'Umar (رضي الله عنه) asked, 'Son of whom?'
The man said, 'Son of Shihab (a falling star).'
'Umar (رضي الله عنه) asked, 'Where are you from?'
He replied, 'From al-Hurqah (the burning fire).'
'Umar (رضي الله عنه) asked, 'Where do you live?'
The man replied, 'In al-Harah (the heat).'
'Umar (رضي الله عنه) asked, 'Where is it located?'
The man asnwered, 'In al-Ludhah (the flames).'
'Umar (رضي الله عنه) then told him, 'Rush to your people's rescue for they are on fire.'
The man hurried back only to find his family burned." (Reported by Abul Qasim Ibn Bashraan)
Moreover, it is reported that after the conquest of Egypt, its people went to meet Hadrat 'Amr Ibn al-'Aas (رضي الله عنه) right upon his arrival. They said, "O Ameer! The River Nile will not flow unless we observe a certain custom." Hadrat 'Amr Ibn al-'Aas (رضي الله عنه) asked, "What custom is this?" They answered, "On the 11th night of this current month, we select a virgin still living with her parents, handsomely reward the latter, then dress and adorn the girl as richly as we can and throw her in the Nile." 'Amr (رضي الله عنه) replied, "This certainly does not go in line with Islaam, which wipes out whatever acts of ignorance that existed before its advent."
For a while, the Nile continued to flow neither abundantly nor insufficiently, untill Muslim troops planned to leave. Consequently, Hadrat 'Amr (رضي الله عنه) wrote to Ameerul Mu'mineen Hadrat 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) to inform him of the situation. Hadrat 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) replied that Hadrat 'Amr (رضي الله عنه) said the right thing and that Islaam does wipe out acts of ignorance that existed before its advent.
Hadrat 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) informed Hadrat 'Amr (رضي الله عنه) that he was sending him a card enclosed with his message and that he was to throw it in the Nile.
When Hadrat 'Amr (رضي الله عنه) received the message, he opened the card, which read, "From Allaah's humble servant, 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab, the Ameerul Mu'mineen, to Egypt's River Nile, if you flow on your own, do not continue to flow. Yet, if you flow according to Allaah's Will, I pray to Allaah, the One, the Conqueror, to cause you to flow."
The card was thrown in the Nile a day before observing the Egyptian pagan custom. The next morning people woke up to find how Allaah, Exalted be He, caused it to flow for a distance of 16 cubits overnight. Since then, the people of Egypt have abandoned their hateful custom indefinitely. (Reported by al-Haafidh Ibn Katheer رحمه الله)
Talq Ibn Shuraih (رضي الله عنه) states: When a man spoke to Sayyiduna 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) and lied, 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) would say, "Take this back." The man would lie again and again. 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) would say, "Take this back." The man would then admit, "Everything I told you is the truth, except what you told me to take back." (Ibn 'Asaakir)
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) Gives Sayyiduna 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) The Glad Tidings That He Will Be Admitted To Jannah (Paradise)
Our beloved Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) gave to Sayyiduna 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) the glad news that he wil be among the dwellers of Paradise. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) even saw Hadrat 'Umar's palace in Jannah.
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ood (رضي الله عنه) said, "I heard the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) say: 'A man from among the dwellers of Jannah (Paradise) will now pass along,' Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq (رضي الله عنه) passed by. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) then said: 'Another of the dwellers of Paradise will now pass along,' and Sayyiduna 'Umar al-Farooq (رضي الله عنه) passed by." (at-Tirmidhi and Haakim)
Sayyiduna 'Abdur Rahmaan Ibn 'Auf (رضي الله عنه) states: I heard Allaah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) say: "Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) will be admitted to paradise, so will 'Umar (رضي الله عنه), so will 'Uthmaan (رضي الله عنه), so will 'Ali (رضي الله عنه), so will Talhah (رضي الله عنه), so will az-Zubayr (رضي الله عنه), so will 'Abdur Rahmaan Ibn 'Auf (رضي الله عنه), so will Sa'd Ibn Abi Waqqas (رضي الله عنه), so will Sa'eed Ibn Ibn Zayd (رضي الله عنه), so will Abu 'Ubayd Ibn al-Jarrah (رضي الله عنه)." (at-Tirmidhi)
