At one time during his khilafat
Hadrat Umar RA was seated working on a budget when he
heard a knock. Hadrat Ali RA entered and said that he had
something to discuss. Hadrat Umar RA asked, "Is it personal
or does it have to do with matters of state?" Hadrat Ali RA
answered that it was a personal matter, and so Hadrat Umar
RA closed his books and blew out the lamp, turning his full
attention to his guest.
Hadrat Ali RA asked, "Why have you blown out the
lamp?" Hadrat Umar RA answered, "I cannot justify letting
the oil of the people burn while we have a personal
discussion."

Shaykh Muhammad as-Sindi رحمه الله said,

"No one is going to reject munkar in the way it should be rejected except for the one who knows Allaah سبحانه و تعالى in the proper way, knows His right, and loves Him from the depth of the heart. [He is also only the one] who sees that everything is in Allaah's hand and no one other than Allaah سبحانه و تعالى is of any concern to him. This is the person who, if he sees his Beloved disobeyed or His ruling contradicted, will stand out of jealousy and honour for the sake of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى and to get closer to Him. He will rebuke the evildoer no matter who he may be and he will strive his utmost to remove that evil. The one who truly and sincerely loves Allaah سبحانه و تعالى will not take disobedience to his Beloved lightly and he will not have the patience to witness it. And, furthermore, he will not love those people [who commit such evil]. That stance is not achieved except by those people who love Allaah سبحانه و تعالى and whom He loves and who do not fear, for the sake of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى, the reproach of anyone. Among those people is Sayyiduna 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه

During our time [1], the 'jealousy' or rage for the sake of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى has been lost from the hearts of the servants. The evil has become accepted and what is good has become rejected. The one who cries should cry over that disaster." [2]

Notes:

[1] The Shaykh رحمه الله died in the year 1163 A.H.

Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Yusuf while delivering a speech in Pakistan said that during the Caliphate of Sayyidina Umar رضي الله عنه (18 hijri) there was such a severe drought in the whole of Arab that even food items were not available at any cost. People were dying due to hunger.

Meanwhile Umar رضي الله عنه came to know that in Egypt there is excess produce. Egypt was then under Muslim rule and Sayyidina Amr bin Al-Aas رضي الله عنه was its Governor.

Umar رضي الله عنه wrote him a letter :

There is no food stuff in Hijaz and I have come to know that there you have excess of it. Therefore, send food stuff for the people here.

The Governor wrote back :

Rest assured, I will send such a huge caravan loaded with food stuff that when its first camel will be unloaded in Madinah the last camel will be loaded in Egypt.

The distance between Hijaz and Egypt was of one month which was in those days covered on camels. When the food stuff arrived it was indeed in huge quantity. An announcement was made in Madinah and it's surroundings that whoever wants may eat at the table spread of Umar رضي الله عنه and whoever wants may take his share home. Therefore thousands were fed by Sayyidina Umar رضي الله عنه and many took their share home.

A companion رضي الله عنه who lived in the jungle also came to know about this through some people that there is food stuff in Madinah and it is being distributed. He had a goat. He thought that if he leaves it behind some animal may eat it so it is better that he slaughters it himself and eats it- in this way he will gain strength for the journey.

When he slaughtered the goat not a single drop of blood came out of it. On seeing this the companion رضي الله عنه started crying, thinking that not even myself even the goat has suffered so much. He held his head and fell down crying and then went to sleep.

In his sleep he saw a dream in which he saw the Prophet (saw) who said 'Go to Umar, say to him my salam and say you were a wise man, what happened to your wisdom ?

The companion got up and somehow managed to get to Madinah. Knocked the door of Umar رضي الله عنه and said The messenger of Rasoolalah (saw) seeks permission. Umar رضي الله عنه came out bare footed and asked what was the matter. He narrated the whole story on which Umar رضي الله عنه trembled and said 'I have made some mistake '. He immediately gathered the knowledgeable people of Madinah and said, I have been telling you again and again that you should inform me if I make a mistake but you did not do it. My master Rasoolalah Muhammad (saw) has sent me this message. Tell me what mistake have I committed. The companions said 'we have not observed any mistake'. One companion got up and said ' one thing that I realise is that when there was drought in your land, there was no food stuff and people were dying of hunger, instead of praying to Allah you asked your governor for help who is a human just like you. This is the mistake. Umar رضي الله عنه said indeed this is the mistake and everyone said 'this is the mistake'.

Sayyidina Umar رضي الله عنه immediately made dua (supplication ) and begged for forgiveness. As soon as he made this dua it created a panic in the clouds. They were racing with one another and saying ' Go to Madinah, Umar is calling'.

(bism1)
(salaam)

(Adapted from Asbabul Fitnah of Hadhrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi rh.a)

OUR SALAF(Spiritual Forefathers) had such a simple outlook towards life that when Hadhrat Umar Faarooq (Radhiyallahu anhu) set out for Baitul Maqdis simplicity cascaded from every action and condition of his. [Baitul Maqdis was in the clutches of the Roman Christians at the time, just as today it is the control of the Zionists of Israel.]

The Sahaabah (Radhiyallahu anhum) had surrounded the city of Baitul Maqdis. The Christians in the city were prepared to fight to the death to hold onto the city. They said that in their scriptures the description of the Conqueror of Baitul Maqdis was clearly depicted. They were only prepared to open the gates of the city for the person who fits the description. They, therefore, wished to see the Leader of the Muslims - the Khalifah.

The Commander of the Muslim Army, Hadhrat Abu Ubaidah Bin Jarraah (Radhiyallahu anhu) wrote to the Khalifah, Hadhrat Umar (Radhiyallahu anhu) for his graceful presence to break the deadlock. Thus Ameerul Mumineen Umar Bin Khattaab (Radhiyallahu anhu) set out on the long journey from Madinah Munawwarah through the arid desert to Shaam (the Levant).
The first mark of simplicity was that he did not travel with a procession of ministers and bodyguards. There was no stately entourage with him. It was only him, his slave and one camel. And how was the journey undertaken? The two of them took equal turns to sit on the camel. When Umar (Radhiyallahu anhu) would be seated on the camel, his slave would lead the camel by holding onto the rope of the camel. Then Umar (Radhiyallahu anhu) would draw the camel whilst his slave would sit comfortably on the camel.

Can any other nation produce a similar example of such equality and simplicity? Never! The second mark of simplicity was that when they arrived in Shaam at the camp of the Muslims outside Baitul Maqdis, and coincidentally at that time Hadhrat Umar (Radhiyallahu anhu) was pulling the camel whilst his slave was on the camel, the Sahaabah (Radhiyallahu anhum) exhorted Umar (Radhiyallahu anhu) to don a new set of garments and seat himself on an Arabian stallion for his appearance before the Christian leaders and rulers of the city.

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiyallahu anhu) was wearing a garment that was patched at many places and the long journey had borne its impressions on the ragged garment. In spite of this exhortation going against the grain of the Khalifah, he chose to please his advisers and therefore put on a new robe and got onto a majestic stallion. The proud Arab stallion kicked aloft its forelegs and neighed pompously. Immediately the Khalifah subdued the animal and got off the horse saying furiously to his advisers:
"Do you wish to destroy Umar! We are a nation whom Allah has granted honour by virtue of Islam."
Thus saying he removed the new robe and got onto his camel. Let us pause here and remove the cobwebs in our thinking. We are blissfully unaware of the reality of honour and awe. We labour under the misconception that awe and honour come with extravagant garments and flashy vehicles. This is highly erroneous.

True honour is the product of perfection. What kind of honour is there in something fleeting? When one removes the extravagant garment one is stripped of one's so-called honour! As long as one is covered with the fanciful garment one is honoured. The moment one changes the garment one becomes disgraced! Is this called honour? Honour is that which remains with one all the time. That honour stems from perfection. And the honour of a Muslim is inextricably interwoven in the Garment of Islam. Adopt Islam perfectly, then - Insha-Allah - you will be honoured without any paraphernalia..............
