Hadrat Anas Ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) narrates: "The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: 'I walked into Paradise and saw a gold palace. I asked, who does it belong to? The replied, to a man from Quraysh. I thought that it was me. I asked, who is he? They replied, 'Umar (رضي الله عنه).'" (Reported by at-Tirmidhi, Ahmad, and Ibn Hibban)
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (رضي الله ) narrates: "While we were in the company of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), he said, 'While I was asleep, I saw myself in Paradise and there I beheld a woman performing ablution beside a palace, I asked, "To whom does this palace belong?" They said, "To 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab (رضي الله عنه)." Then I remembered 'Umar's ghayrah (i.e. jealousy over women), and so I hurried away from that palace.' (When Sayyiduna 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) heard this from the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)), he wept and said, "Do you think it is likely that I would have feeling of ghayrah because of you, O Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم)?"'" (Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
'Abdullah Ibn Hisham (رضي الله عنه) narrates: "We were with the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), while he was walking with 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab (رضي الله عنه) arm in arm. 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) said to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم): 'O Allaah's Messenger, you are dearer to me than everyone and everything except myself.'
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) answered: 'No, by Him is Whose Hands my life is, I should be dearer to you than yourself.'
Hadrat 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) then said: 'I swear by Allaah, you are dearer to me than myself now.'
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) thereupon said: 'Now, 'Umar.'" (al-Bukhari and Ahmad)
Among Sayyiduna 'Umar's (رضي الله عنه) invaluable words were the following: "Whenever one's sense of shame diminishes, one's piety does to. And whenever one's piety diminishes, one's heart becomes dead." [Seeratul Khulafaa' ar-Rashideen رضي الله عنهم]
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) reports Allaah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) as saying: "While I was asleep I saw people being presented to me (in a dream) and they wore shirts, some of which were merely covering their chests, and some were a bit longer. 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) was presented before me and his shirt was so long that it was dragging on the floor." The noble Sahaabah (رضي الله عنهم أجمعين) asked, "How do you interpret it, oh Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم)?" He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, "It is a symbol of faith." (al-Bukhari, Muslim, at-Tirmidhi)
The Vast Knowledge Of Sayyiduna 'Umar (رضي الله عنه)
The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is reported to have said: "While I was asleep, I saw (in a dream) a cup containing milk being presented to me. I took some sips until I perceived freshness being reflected through my nails. Then I handed the milk to 'Umar (رضي الله عنه). They said: 'Oh Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم), how do you interpret it?' He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: 'This implies knowledge'." (al-Bukhari, Muslim, and at-Tirmidhi)
In his Fathul Bari, al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar (رحمه الله) explains that 'knowledge' here refers to the ability to rule people according to the Qur'an and Sunnah. Sayyiduna 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) exclusively enjoyed this kind of knowledge which was manifested in his long caliphate which lasted a period of ten years, in contrast to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq (رضي الله عنه), who ruled for only two years.
Also, throughout Sayyiduna 'Umar's (رضي الله عنه) reign, the entire nation was under his authority. Conversely, during Sayyiduna 'Uthmaan's (رضي الله عنه) rule, people divided over many issues and opinions varied, which resulted in widespread sedition.
That is why Sayyiduna 'Umar's (رضي الله عنه) knowledge was matchless in the Islamic history.
Sayyiduna 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab (رضي الله عنه) narrates: "A Jew one day said to me, 'O Ameerul Mu'mineen! There is a verse in your Holy Book which is read by all of you (Muslims), and had it been revealed to us, we would have taken that day (on which it was revealed) as a day of celebration.'"
Sayyiduna 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) asked, 'Which verse is that?'
The Jew replied:"This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen Islaam as your religion."(5:3)
Sayyiduna 'Umar (رضي الله عنه) replied, "No doubt, we know when and where this verse was revealed unto the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم). It was on Friday, the day the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) was standing on 'Arafah (i.e. the day of Hajj)." (al-Bukhari and Muslim)
In his al-Fath, al-Hafidh رحمه الله explains: "Sayyiduna 'Umar رضي الله عنه meant that being in a position of authority might prevent one from learning more about Islam, as a chief might be too proud to join circles of students. That is why why Malik رحمه الله spoke of the disadvantages of being appointed as a judge saying: 'Whenever a judge is deposed, he never goes back to the circle where he used to learn.'"
Qubaysah Ibn Jabir states: "I swear by Allaah, never have I known anyone more merciful to his subjects than Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq (رضي الله عنه), nor anyone who read Allaah's Book more, who knew more about Islam, who abided more strictly to Allaah's limites and who was more feared by men that 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه), nor have I ever known anyone who was shyer than 'Uthmaan Ibn 'Affaan (رضي الله عنه)." (Ibn al-Atheer)
'Abdur Rahmaan Ibn 'Abdul Qari رضي الله عنه narrates: "I headed with 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه to the masjid one night during Ramadaan. We found a disunited group of people; one man praying on his own, and a group of men praying behind an Imam.
'Umar رضي الله عنه said: 'I believe if we unite this group behind a single Imam, it will be better.' He then made up his mind and united them behind 'Ubayy Ibn Ka'b رضي الله عنه.
When we headed there another night, we found the Muslimeen led by a single Imam in prayer. 'Umar رضي الله عنه said: 'What a good innovation this is! Yet, the part of the night they sleep is better than that in which they pray.' [al-Bukhari]
Sayyiduna 'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood رضي الله عنه said, "I believe all the people were grieved when 'Umar رضي الله عنه was stabbed, except the people of malevolence. 'Umar رضي الله عنه was more Allaah conscious than any of us, read the Qur'an more than any of us and was more versed in Islaam than any of us." [Seeratul Khulafaa ar-Rashideen رضي الله عنهم]
It is reported that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Wherever Shaytaan encountered 'Umar since the latter embraced Islaam, he fell on his face." [Seeratul Khulafaa ar-Rashideen رضي الله عنهم]
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
