Among the greatest reasons for the high status of the Sahaabah رضي الله عنهم is that to which Allaah سبحانه و تعالى bore witness of their purity of heart and sincere faith. That, by Allaah, is a mighty testimony from the Lord of mankind, which no human being can attain after the cessation of the Revelation.

Allaah سبحانه و تعالى says:

"Indeed, Allaah was pleased with the believers when they gave the Bay'ah (pledge) to you (O Muhammad) under the tree, He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down As‑Sakeenah (calmness and tranquillity) upon them, and He rewarded them with a near victory"

Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Tafseer al-Qur'aan al-'Azeem (4/243):

"He knew what was in their hearts" i.e., of sincerity and loyalty, and the willingness to hear and obey.

We love the Companions رضي الله عنهم of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم but we do not go to excess in our love for any one individual among them; nor do we disown any one of them. We hate anyone who hates them or does not speak well of them and we only speak well of them. Love of them is a part of Islam, part of belief and part of excellent behavior, while hatred of them is unbelief, hypocrisy and rebellion.

We confirm that, after the death of Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, the Caliphate went first to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, thus proving his excellence and superiority over the rest of the Muslims; then to `Umar ibn al-Khattab; then to `Uthman; and then to `Ali ibn Abi Talib; may Allah be well pleased with all of them. These are the Rightly-Guided Caliphs and upright leaders.

We bear witness that the ten who were named by the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and who were promised the Garden by him, will be in the Garden, as the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, whose word is truth, bore witness that they would be. The ten are: Abu Bakr, `Umar, `Uthman, `Ali, Talha, Zubayr, Sa`d, Sa`id, `Abd al-Rahman ibn `Awf, and Abu `Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah whose title was the Trustee of this Community, may Allah be pleased with all of them.

Anyone who speaks well of the Companions رضي الله عنهم of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his wives and offspring رضي الله عنهم, who are all pure and untainted by any impurity, is free from the accusation of hypocrisy.

Al-Khateeb al-Baghdaadi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Kifaayah (49):

Even if there was nothing narrated from Allaah سبحانه و تعالى or His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم about them (the Companions رضي الله عنهم), the things that they did such a migrating (hijrah), engaging in jihad, supporting (the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and Islam), expending their lives and their wealth, killing their fathers and sons (in jihad), sincerely following the deen, believing strongly and with certainty, is definitive proof of their good character and sincerity, and shows that they are superior to all those sincere people of good character who come after them, for all time. This is the view of all the scholars, and of the fuqaha' whose opinion counts.

Sayyiduna 'Abdullaah Ibn Mas'ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:

Allaah سبحانه و تعالى looked into the hearts of His slaves, and He saw that the heart of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was the best of people's hearts, so He chose him for Himself and sent him with His message.

Then He looked into the hearts of His slaves after the heart of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and He found that the hearts of his companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) were the best of people's hearts, so He made them the supporters of His Prophet, who fought for His religion. So whatever the Muslims think is good, is good before Allaah, and whatever they think is bad, is bad before Allaah.

Sayyiduna 'Abdullah Ibn Busr رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Glad tidings for the person who saw me and believed in me. Glad tidings for the person who saw the person who saw me. Glad tidings for the person who saw the person who saw the person who saw me and believed in me. Glad tidings for them and a wonderful abode for them."

[Narrated by at-Tabarani with a good chain of narrators, and by al-Hakim as stated in al-Jami' as-Sagheer of as-Suyooti with the commentary at-Tayseer of al-Munawi, vol 2, p 119]

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

The most merciful to my community is Abu Bakr

The strongest in the deen of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى is 'Umar رضي الله عنه

The most truly modest is 'Uthman

The one with the most knowledge of judgement is 'Ali

The one with the most knowledge of the shares of inheritance is Zayd

The one with the most recitation of the Book of Allaah سبحانه و تعالى is 'Ubayy Ibn Ka'b رضي الله عنه

The one with the most knowledge of the lawful and unlawful is Mu'adh Ibn Jabal

The trustworthy representative of this community is Abu 'Ubayda Ibn al-Jarrah

Abu Hurayra رضي الله عنه is a vessel of knowledge,

And Salman رضي الله عنه is a sea of knowledge which is not perceived,

Vegetation has not shaded nor has the earth supported anyone with a more truthful tongue than Abu Dharr

Who could be more astray than those who have rancour in their hearts against the people who are the cream of the Muslim community and the most honoured of Allaah's friends after the Prophets?

They are, in a sense, worse than the Jews and Christians, for if the Jews are asked who the best of their community were, their answer is the companions of Musa (عليه السلام). Similarly, if the Christians are asked about the best of their community, they say they were the companions of 'Isa (عليه السلام).

But when these Rawafid are questioned as to who are the worst of their community, they say the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) of Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم). They make exception only for a few. But if you compare them, you will find that many of those whom they malign are many times better than those they do not.

The Saheehayn contain a hadeeth reported by Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri رضي الله عنه that something happened between Khalid Ibn al-Waleed رضي الله عنه and 'Abdur Rahman Ibn 'Awf رضي الله عنه, whereupon the former said some words to the latter. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم took exception to it and said, "Do not abuse any of my Companions. Were any one of you to spend heaps of gold equivalent to Mount Uhud, you would not attain even the virtue of a mudd or half thereof of one of them." [al-Bukhari, Fada'il as-Sahaaba, 3673; Muslim, Fada'il as-Sahaaba, 2541; Abu Dawood, as-Sunna, 4658; at-Tirmidhi, al-Manaqib, 3860; Ahmad, 3:11, 54]

By his Companions رضي الله عنهم the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم meant 'Abdur Rahman رضي الله عنه and others like him who had embraced Islaam in the early years before Makkah was captured and who had fought for Islaam. They were the people who swore their fealty to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم under the tree. They were better and more honoured than those who entered into the faith afterwards, that it, after the Treaty of Hudaybiyya, which the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم concluded with the Makkans. Khalid Ibn al-Waleed رضي الله عنه embraced Islaam along with others in this later period. To be sure, they were better than those who embraced Islaam after Makkah was conquered and those are known as tulaqa, that it, those who were forgiven and set free. This group included Abu Sufyan and his sons, Yazeed and Mu'awiyah

The burden of this hadeeth is that those who joined the Prophet's صلى الله عليه وسلم company later should not speak ill of those who had joined his company earlier since they had honour no other Companions رضي الله عنهم had and could not have, even if they spent fold equal to Mount Uhud. If this is about those who embraced Islaam after the Treaty of Hudaybiyya and before the Conquest of Makkah, what of those who never joined the Prophet's company? May Allaah سبحانه و تعالى be pleased with all of the Companions!!

The Saheehayn record from Jabir Ibn 'Abdullaah رضي الله عنه that at the Battle of the Ditch the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم gave a call and az-Zubayr رضي الله عنه responded. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم called a second time, and az-Zubayr رضي الله عنه responded again, whereupon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Every Prophet has a helper (hawari); my helper is az-Zubayr."

Hudhayfah Ibn al-Yaman رضي الله عنه reported that the people of Najran came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and said, "Messenger of Allaah, send us a trustworthy person." He صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Certainly I will send you a trustworthy person." Then everyone raised his head and looked to him. He صلى الله عليه وسلم selected Abu 'Ubaydah رضي الله عنه and sent him.

At the battle of Uhud, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم encouraged Sayyiduna Sa'd رضي الله عنه to shoot his arrows with these words, "Shoot, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you."

The reference to the sacrifice of both the parents by the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was a rare honour granted to Sa'd رضي الله عنه. [Sharh al-Aqeedah at-Tahawiyya]

[Aqeedah Tahawiyyah]

Sa'eed Ibn Zayd رضي الله عنه testified that the Prophet said, "Ten people will go to paradise. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم will go to Paradise; Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; 'Umar رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; 'Uthmaan رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; 'Ali رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; Talhah رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; az-Zubayr رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; Sa'd Ibn Malik رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; and 'Abdur Rahman Ibn 'Awf رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise." Sa'eed رضي الله عنه said should people ask him he would name the tenth. They asked and he answered, "Sa'eed Ibn Zayd رضي الله عنه," and added, "The participation of any of these men once in a campaign with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم which raised duse to his face is better than a whole lifetime of your work, even if you lived as long as Prophet Nooh عليه السلام."

[This hadeeth has been recorded by Abu Dawood, Ibn Majah, and at-Tirmidhi who has rated it as saheeh. Abu Dawood, as-Sunnah, 4649, 4650; at-Tirmidhi, al-Manaqib, 3748, 3757; Ibn Majah, al-Muqaddamah, 134; Ahmad, 1:1; al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak, 4:440. It is authentic]

at-Tirmidhi has also recorded the hadeeth reported by 'Abdur Rahman Ibn 'Awf that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; 'Umar رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; 'Ali رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; 'Uthmaan رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; Talhah رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; az-Zubayr Ibn al-'Awwam رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; 'Abdur Rahman Ibn 'Awf رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; Sa'eed Ibn Zayd Ibn Nawfal رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise; and Abu Ubaydah Ibn al-Jarrah رضي الله عنه will go to Paradise."

[at-Tirmidhi, al-Manaqib, 3748; Ahmad, 1:193; al-Baghawi, Sharh as-Sunnah, 3925. The hadeeth is saheeh. This hadeeth has also been recorded by Imam Ahmad رحمه الله in his Musnad. The hadeeth which Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Khaythamah رحمه الله has recorded has the name of 'Uthmaan رضي الله عنه before the name of 'Ali رضي الله عنه]
