Ibn Sa'd رضي الله عنه narrates on the authority of Ibn Sireen رضي الله عنه who said: 'Ever since the demise of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) no one has been known to be most conscious in giving judgement about matters that he did not know, except Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, and no body was so conscious of Allah like Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, except Umar رضي الله عنه. When Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه used to have a case that is not referred to in the Qur'an and the Sunnah, he used to say: 'I tried to arrive at the right opinion through my own personal judgement; if it is right, it is Allah's favour, and if it is wrong, it is my fault and I pray to Allah to forgive me.'' Hadhrat Abu Bakr (RA) Never Reveals The Prophet's (SAW) Secrets

Sayyiduna 'Umar ibn al-Khattaab (RA) narrates: 'When Hafsah bint Umar (RA) became a widow after the deah of (her husband) Khunays Ibn Hudhafah as-Sahmyy (RA) who has been one of the Companions of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), and he died at Madeenah, I went to 'Uthmaan ibn 'Affaan (RA) and offered him the hand of Hafsah (RA) (for marriage). He said, 'I will think it over.' I waited for a few days, then he met me and said, 'It seems that it is not possible for me to marry at present.'

Hadhrat 'Umar (RA) added, 'I met Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq (RA) and said to him, 'If you wish, I will give my daighter Hafsah (RA) in marriage to you.' Abu Bakr (RA) kept silent and did not say any word to me in reply. I got more furious with him than with 'Uthmaan (RA). I waited for a few days, and then Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) asked for her hand, and I gave her in marriage to him.

Afterwards, I met Abu Bakr (RA) who said to me, 'Perhaps you got angry with me when you offered Hafsah (RA) in marriage to me, and I did not give you a reply?' I said, 'Yes.' Abu Bakr (RA) said, 'Nothing prevented me to respond to your proposal except that I knew that Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) had mentioned her, and I never wanted to let out the secret of Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). And if Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) had refused her, I would have accepted her.'' (Reported by al-Bukhaari) (Ibid, Page 46)

Hadrat Abu Bakr (RA)'s Tender Heart

On the authority of Ummul Mu'mineen Hadrat 'A'isha (RA), who says: 'I had seen my parents practising Islam since I attained the age of puberty. Not a day passed buy the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) visited us, both in the morning and the evening. My father Abu Bakr (RA) thought of building a masjid in the courtyard of his house, and he did so. He used to pray and recite the Qur'an in it. The polythiest women and their children used to gather around him and look at him astonishingly. Hadrat Abu Bakr (RA) was a softhearted man and could not help weeping while reciting the Qur'an. The chiefs of the Quraysh disbelievers became afraid of that (i.e. that their children and women might be affected by the recitation of the Qur'an).' (Al-Bukhari) (Ibid, Pages 46-47)

Hadrat Anas (RA) reports that after the death of Allaah's Messenger (sallalaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), Abu Bakr (RA) said to Umar (RA), 'Let us visit Umm Ayman (RA) as Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) used to visit her.' When they went to her, she wept. They (Abu and Umar) said to her, 'What makes you weep? What is in store (in the next world) for Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) is better than this (worldly life).'

She said, 'I weep not because I am ignorant of the fact that what is in store for Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) (in the next world) is better than (this worldly life), but I weep because the Divine Revelation has ceased to come from Heaven.' This moved both of them to tears and they began to weep along with her.' (Muslim) (Ibid, page 47)

Regarding The Superiority Of Hadrat Abu Bakr (RA)

The foremost proof of the superiority of Hadrat Abu Bakr (RA) over all of the other Companions (RA) is the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)'s assignment of him to lead the Prayers during his illness. It is for this reason that the great Companions (RA) all said, 'He (the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) was satisfied with him for our religion, are we not satisfied with him for our wordly affairs?' Thus, the agreement of the majority of the Companions (RA) was to appoint him caliph, and the remaining ones also ultimately agreed.

My belief is that the superiority of Hadrat Abu Bakr (RA) is definitive (qat'i) by virtue of the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) appointing him as his representative to lead prayers (imaama), as it is established in the religion that the one most worthy of leading the prayer is the most superior. Other great Companions (RA) were available for the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) to appoint, among them Hadrat Ali (RA), but he (the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) insisted upon Hadrat Abu Bakr (RA).

One time, Hadrat Abu Bakr (RA) was late coming to the prayer and Hadrat Umar (RA) stepped forward to lead it. The Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, 'Allaah and the believers refuse other than Abu Bakr.' Even Ummul Mu'mineen Hadrat Aisha Siddeeqah bint Siddeeq (RA)'s opinion regarding her father is well known [in that she thought he was too soft-hearted for the post of leading the prayers (imama), but the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) strongly insisted on it (Bukhari, al-Adhan, 884)]

After much discussion and consultation in the shelter of the Sa'ida tribe (saqeefa Bani Sa'ida), both the Muhaajireen and the Ansaar (radiallaahu 'anhum ajma'een) unanimously agreed on Hadrat Abu Bakr (RA) becoming Caliph. The consensus (Ijmaa') of the scholars is definitive proof since the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, 'My Ummah will not gather together on deviance.' (Abu Dawood, Ibn Majah) (al-Fiqh al-Akbar Explained)

Hadrat Abu Bakr (RA)'s Interpretation Of Dreams

Hadrat Abu Bakr (RA) was an acknowledged interpreter of dreams. The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) himself used to consult only him for interpreting his dreams. (Ibid)

Sa'eed Ibn Mansoor رضي الله عنه narrates on the authority of Sa'eed Ibn Al-Musayyib رضي الله عنه who said: 'Ummul Mu'mineen Hadrat 'As'isha Siddeeqah Bint Siddeeq (radiallaahu 'anhumaa) saw in a dream that three moons fell in her house. So she narrated her dream to her father Hadrat Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq (RA) - who was the best interpreter of dreams - he said: 'If you have truly seen that, then three of the best of Allaah's creation will be buried in your house.' When the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) passed away, Hadrat Abu Bakr (RA) said to Ummul Mu'mineen Aisha (RA), 'This is the best of your three moons.'' (Ibid, page 47)

Sa'eed Ibn Mansoor رضي الله عنه also narrates on the authority of 'Umar Ibn Sharahabeel رضي الله عنه
who said: 'The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: 'I saw that I was followed by black sheep then I was followed by white sheep that outnumbered the black ones in a way that you could hardly see the black ones.' Hadrat Abu Bakr (RA) interpreted the dream saying 'O Prophet of Allaah (sallallaau 'alayhi wa sallam), the black sheep stand for the Arabs who will embrace Islam in large numbers, and the white sheep stand for the non-Arabs who will embrace Islam in far larger numbers than the Arabs.' The Prophet (sallalaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, 'That was exactly how the angel interpreted it before dawn.'' (Ibid, page 48)

Ibn Sa'eed رضي الله عنه further narrates on the authority of Ibn Shihaab رضي الله عنه who said: The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) saw a dream and narrated it to Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه. He said: 'I saw in a dream that we were racing and I was ahead of you by steps.' Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه said, 'You will die and rest in peace in Jannah, and I will live two and a half years after your passing away.' (Ibid, Page 48)

On the authority of Abu Qilaabah رضي الله عنه who says: A man said to Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq (RA), 'I saw in a dream that I urinate blood.' Whereupon Abu Bakr (RA) said, 'You are a man who copulates with his wife in the time of her menses, so seek Allaah's Forgiveness and do not do this again.' (Ibid)

Jubayr Ibn Mut'am رضي الله عنه reports: A woman came to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) to ask him about something, but he told her to come some other time. She said, 'O Messenger of Allaah! What if I come but do not find you?' (It seemed as if she meant that he might die.) The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, 'If you do not find me, then go to Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه.' (Reported by Bukhari and Muslim)

Sayyiduna Anas (RA) narrates: Banu al-Mustaliq sent me to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) in order to ask him to who should they pay alms after the Prophet's demise (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). I went to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) to ask him about this, and he said to me, 'To Abu Bakr (RA).' (Reported by al-Haakim)

Ummul Mu'mineen Hadrat 'Aa'isha Siddeeqah (RA) reports that Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said to her during his (last) illness: 'Call your father Abu Bakr (RA), and your brother too, so that I may write a document, lest someone else might be desirous (of succeeding me) and that some claimant might say, 'I have better claim to it,' whereas Allaah and the believers do not substantiate the claim of anyone but that of Abu Bakr (RA).'
