Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radiallaahu 'anh) reports that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: 'I did not benefit from wealth as I benefit from the wealth of Abu Bakr.' Whereupon Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) burst into tears and said, 'My person and wealth are entirely at your service, O Messenger of Allaah.' (Ahmad) (Ibid, Page 32)

Umm ul Mu'mineen Hadhrat 'Aa'ishah (radiallaahu 'anhaa) is reported to have said: 'Abu Bakr freed seven people all of whom were tortured in the Cause of Allaah.' (Ibn 'Asaakir) (Ibid, Page 32)

Hadhrat 'Umar ibn al-Khattaab (radiallaahu 'anh) narrates: The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) asked us to give out charity in Allaah's Cause, and I had some wealth. Then I said, 'It's time for me to outdo Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) today.' So I presented half of my total wealth. The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) asked me, 'Have you left anything for your family?' I replied, 'An equal amount of it.'

Then came Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) with all that he had. The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) asked him, 'O Abu Bakr! Have you left anything for your family?' He replied, 'Allaah and His Messenger.' I said, 'Never will I outdo Abu Bakr.' (At-Tirmidhi) (Ibid, Page 32)

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (radiallaahu 'anh) reports the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) to have said: 'Never did anyone do us a favour but it was rewarded; except Abu Bakr. He did us a favour which will be rewarded only by Allaah on the Day of Judgment. And I did not benefit from any wealth as I benefit from the wealth of Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh).' Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh): The Most Knowledgeable And Intelligent Companion

Imaam An-Nawawi (rahmatullaahi 'alaih) states in has Tadheeb: 'Scholars have deduced that Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) is the most knowledgeable of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)'s Companions (radiallaahu 'anhum) on the basis of the authentic Hadeeth reported by Imaam Al-Bukhari رضي الله عنه and Imaam Muslim رضي الله عنه: 'When Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) passed away and Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه became the Khaleef (Caliph), some Arabs reneged (reverted to disbelief). Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه decided to declare war against them.

Hadhrat 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anh) said to him, 'How can you declare war against these people when Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) says: 'I have been ordered (by Allaah) to fight against people until they bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and if they do so their lives and property shall be protected, unless (they do acts that are punishable) in accordance with Islaam, and their reckoning will be with Allaah Almighty.''

Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) said, 'By Allaah! I will fight those who distinguish between Salaah (prayer) and Zakaah (obligatory charity), because Zakaah is the compulsory right to be taken from one's property (according to Allaah's Commands). By Allaah, if they refuse to give me even the cord used for hobbling the feet of a camel, which they used to pay as Zakaah at the time of Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) I would fight them for withholding it.'

Then Hadhrat 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anh) said, 'By Allah it was nothing but Allaah guided Abu Bakr's heart towards the decision.'

Imaam An-Nawawi رضي الله عنه adds: Shaykh Abu Ishaaq رضي الله عنه and others quote this hadeeth in support of their view that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه was the most knowledgeable of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)'s Companions (radiallaahu 'anhum ajma'een). They argue that all of the Sahaabah fell short of judging the situation until Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه stated his opinion which was correct and they acted in accordance with it. (Ibid, Pages 33-34)

Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anhuma) was asked, 'Who amongs the Sahaabah used to give fataawaa during the lifetime of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)?' He said, 'Abu Bakr and 'Umar, and no one else.' (Ibid, Page 34)

On the authority Of Sayyiduna Abu Sa'eed al-Khudriyy (radiallaahu 'anh): The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) addressed the people saying: 'There is a slave whom Allaah, Exalted and Glorious be He, offered the choice between the good afterworld and that which is with Him, and the slave has chosen that which is with Allaah.' Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) wept, and we were astonished at his weeping caused by what the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) mentioned. We learned later on that Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) himself was the person given the choice, and that Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) knew best of all of us.

Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) added: 'The most bountiful of men unto me in his companionship and his sacrifice of his wealth is Abu Bakr. If I were to choose a bosom friend, I would choose Abu Bakr - but companionship and brotherhood in faith bind us until Allaah unites us in His presence. All the gates of the Masjid should be closed except the gate of Abu Bakr." (Ibid, Page 34)

Ibn Katheer (rahmatullaahi 'alaih) maintains: As-Siddeeq (radiallaahu 'anh) knew best of all of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)'s Companions (radiallaahu 'anhum) about the Qur'aan, because the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) ordered him to lead the other Companions in prayer, and he is reported to have said, 'Let the one who recites the Qur'aan best lead the people in Salaah.' Umm al-Mu'mineen Hadhrat 'Aa'isha (radiallaahu 'anha) reports that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "It is not fitting for people among whom is Abu Bakr to be led by anyone other than him." (At-Tirmidhi, Ibid Page 35)

Abu al-Qaasim al-Baghawi رضي الله عنه quotes Maymoon Ibn Mahraan رضي الله عنه to have said: 'When Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) was asked to judge in a certain case, he would resort to the Glorious Qur'aan; if he did not find guidance, he would resort to the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). If he again failed to find a solution, he would go out and ask the Muslimeen, 'I am supposed to judge in so and so, does anyone of you remember the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) to have said anything concerning this case?'

It used to happen that a group of people would come to him, all of whom remembered a judgment of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), in which case Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) would say, 'All praise and thanks are due to Allaah, Who has made among us people who memorise the Sayings of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam).'

If there was one who could recall a judgment of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) in a case in hand, Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) would gather the people and consult them as regards the case, and if they reached a consensus he would act acordingly.

'Umar (radiallaahu 'anh) used to do the same. If he failed to find guidance in the Qur'aan or Sunnah, he would ask if Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) had passed a judgement concerning the case in question, in which case he would resort to the judgement of Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh). But if he failed to find a judgement passed by Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh), he would gather the Muslimeen with a view to reaching unanimity on a certain judgement.' (Ibid, Page 35)

Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) was known as the foremost genealogist of Quraysh and the best of them all at interpreting dreams. He used to interpret dreams during the lifetime of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam).

According to Muhammad Ibn Sireen (rahmatullaahi 'alaih), he was the best at interpreting dreams, after the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). (Ibid, Page 35)
