Hadhrat Abu Bakr Is Called 'As-Siddeeq' (radiallaahu 'anh)

The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) was uplifted to the Heavens (Isra wal Mi'raj) just after the demise of his uncle, Abu Taalib, and his wife Khadeejah (radiallaahu 'anha). It was a time of sadness and disconsolation for the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), and the situation for Islam appeared to be dark. It was there that he was assured of the destiny of Islaam.

The morning after his ascension, the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) told the Quraysh that he had been carried from Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, and from there he had ascended to the heavens. He narrated to them what he had seen.

When the non-believing Quraysh heard of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)'s ascension to the Heavens, they regarded it as an absurdity, and began to ridicule the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) for his declaration. 'This is unbelievable!' they exclaimed. 'It takes a month for a caravan to go to the Levant (ash-Shaam) and a month to return, how could you do the return journey in one night?'

There were also some muslims who wavered in believing the ascension of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) to the Heavens. Some of them went to Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) and informed him of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)'s journey to Jerusalem and ascension to the Heavens. Some expressed doubt about the veracity of the ascension, but when this question was posed to Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh), he silenced them with his unforgettable words: 'If he (the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)) says so, then he is truthful. There is nothing to be surprised about. I believe him when he says that he received a revelation from Heaven in an hour of the day or night. And that is beyond what you cavail at.'

It was on that occasion that he earned the title as-Siddeeq. May Allaah be pleased with him and rest his soul in peace. (Biographies of the Rightly Guided Caliphs - Radiallaahu 'anhum)

He then went to the Messenger of Allah (salallahu 'alayhi wa sallam), who related the details of the incident to him. Every time the Messenger of Allah (salallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) made a statement, Abu Bakr (radiallahu anh) would say, "You have spoken the truth." When he had finished informing him, Abu Bakr (radiallahu anh) said, "I testify that you are the true Messenger of Allah (salallahu 'alahi wa sallam)," upon which the Messenger of Allah (salallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "And I testify that you are indeed the most truthful (as-siddeeq)." (This is stated in al-Tafseer al-Kabeer)

Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh): The Best Of The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)'s Companions (radiallaahu 'anhum)

Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah have unanimously agreed that the best people after Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) are Hadhrat Abu Bakr, then Hadhrat 'Umar, then Hadhrat 'Uthmaan, then Hadhrat 'Ali, then the rest of the ten Companions whom the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) gave the glad tidings of entering Jannah (Paradise), then the Companions of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) who participated in the battle of Badr, then those who participated in the battle of Uhud, then those who swore allegiance to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), and then the rest of the Companions, May Allaah be well pleased with them all. Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anhuma) is quoted to have said: 'We used to compare Muslims in forms of who was better during the lifetime of Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). We used to regard Abu Bakr as the best. Then Umar, then 'Uthmaan.' (radiallaahu 'anhum) (Al-Bukhari) (Ibid, Page 28)

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiallaahu 'anh) narrates: 'We, the Companions of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), used to say while we were sitting together, 'The best of men in the Nation of Islaam after the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) are Abu Bakr, then 'Umar, then Uthman, then we used to keep silent.' On the authority of Sayyiduna Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abi Taalib (radiallaahu 'anhuma), who said: 'I asked my father (Hadhrat Ali), 'Who are the best people after Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)?' He replied, 'Abu Bakr.' I then asked, 'Who is next?' He said, 'Umar.' I was afraid he would say 'Uthmaan, so I said, 'And then you?' To which he said, 'I am but an ordinary person amongst the Muslims.' (Reported by Al-Bukhaari) (Ibid, Page 29)

Sayyiduna Jaabir (radiallaahu 'anh) reports, that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, 'Never has the sun risen nor set on a person better than Abu Bakr.' (At-Tabaraani and others) (Ibid, Page 29)

Sayyiduna Sa'd Ibn Zuraarah (radiallaahu 'anh) narrates, that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said: 'The Holy Spirit Angel Jibra'eel has informed me that the best man of all of my nation after me will be Abu Bakr.' (At-Tabaraani) (Ibid, Page 29)

Sayyiduna 'Amr Ibn Al-'Aas (radiallaahu 'anh) is reported to have said: 'I asked the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), 'Who is the dearest person to you amongst all of manking?' He replied, 'Aa'isha.' I then asked, 'Who amongst men?' He asnwered, 'Her father (Abu Bakr).' I asked further, 'And who is next?' He said, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab.' The narrator said, 'The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) then enumerated some other men.' (Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim) (Ibid, Pages 29-30)

Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh): The Bravest Companion

Sayyiduna Ali (radiallaahu 'anh) is reported to have once asked the people, 'Tell me who is the bravest man?' 'You,' the people replied. He then asked them, 'Never did I fight anyone except that I put him to route; but tell me who is the bravest man.' The people said, 'We do not know, tell us who is he?' 'Abu Bakr,' replied Hadhrat Ali (radiallaahu 'anh). 'In the battle of Badr, we built a shelter for the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and then asked who is willing to stay with the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) so that none of the polytheists may dare to attack him. None of us had the courage to accept this, save for Abu Bakr who came forward sword in hand, unsheathing it over the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)'s head; and none of the polytheists was able to harm the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). So he is the bravest man.'

Sayyiduna 'Ali (radiallaahu 'anh) added: 'I saw the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) surrounded by the Quraysh, threatened by some and gripped violently by the garment by others; they said: 'Are you the one who calls for the unity of gods?!' Hadhrat 'Ali (radiallaahu 'anh) said: 'By Allaah, none could intervene to save the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) bu Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh); he fought, threatened and pushed them aside, while saying, 'Woe unto you! Would you kill a man because he says, 'My Lord is Allaah?'' Then he (Hadhrat Abu Bakr radiallaahu 'anh) raised his mantle over the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and wept until his beard was wet. Then Sayyiduna Ali (radiallaahu 'anh) said, 'Why do you not answer me? By Allaah, a single hour spent by Abu Bakr is better than a thousand hours spent by the believer of Pharoah's people: that was a man who kept hsi faith secret, while this is a man who made his faith public." (Reported by Al-Bazzaar) (Ibid, Page 30)

Narrating another story of Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh)'s bravery, 'Urwah Ibn Az-Zubayr (radiallaahu 'anh) says: I asked 'Abdullaah Ibn 'Amr Ibn Al-'Aas (radiallaahu 'anh), 'Tell me about the worst thing the disbelievers did to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam).' He said, 'While the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) was praying in the Hijr (roofless ceiling) of the Ka'bah, 'Uqbah Ibn Abi Mu'ayt put his garment around the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)'s neck and throttled him violently. Abu Bakr, may Allaah be pleased with him, came and caught him by his shoulder and pushed him away from the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and said, 'Would you kill a man for saying, 'Allaah is my Lord'?' (al-Bukhaari) (Ibid, Page 30)

Ummul Mu'mineen Hadhrat 'Aa'isha (radiallaahu 'anha) is reported to have said: 'When the number of Muslims reacher thirty nine, Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) asked the permission of Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) to preach Islaam publicly. On his persistent request the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) gave his consent, and all of them went to the Masjid (the Ka'bah) to preach. People dispersed in the corners of the Masjid, each preaching his folk. Then Abu Bakr (radiallaahu'anh) gave a khutbah (sermon); thus he was the first even khateeb (orator) to call to Allaah ('azza wa jal), and His Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). When the Kuffaar (disbelievers) heard him, they fell upon the Muslimeen from all sides. Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) was kicked, thrashed with shoes, trampled under feet and handles most roughly and savagely.' (Reported by Ibn 'Asaakir) (Ibid, Page 31)

Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh): The Most Generous Companion

Allaah, the Almighty, says:

And Al-Muttaqoon (the pious and righteous) will be far removed from it (Hell Fire). He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification." (92:17-18)

Ibn al-Jawzi (rahmatullaahi 'alaih) states: This verse was revealed in reference to Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) (Ibid, Page 32)
