It is stated in al-Fiqh al-Akbar: 'The most noble person after the Prophets (upon them be blessings and peace) is Abu Bakr, the Most Truthful (as-Siddeeq)...'

Abu Bakr's (رضي الله عنه) name before Islam was 'Abd al-Ka'ba; the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) changed his name to 'Abdullah after Islam. His full lineage is: Abu Bakr son of Abu Quhafa 'Uthman, son of 'Amir, son of Ka'b, son of Sa'd, son of Taym, son of Murra, son of Ka'b, son of Lu'ay, son of Ghalib, son of Fihr al-Qurashi al-Taymi.

He was called the Most Truthful One (as-Siddeeq) due to his profound honesty, his devotion to the truth, the strength of his belief, and his being devinely guided (tawfiq). He is the best of all of the friends (awliya) of Allah from among the earlier ones and the later ones.

The Messenger of Allah (salallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "The sun has neither risen nor set on anyone after the Prophets and Messengers superior to Abu Bakr." [1]

It is narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) related the incident of the Ascension (mi'raj) [to the people of Makkah], they rejected him and went to Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه saying, "Your friend is saying such and such." Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) replied that if the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) had said it, he was telling the truth. He then went to the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم), who related the details of the incident to him. Every time the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) made a statement, Abu Bakr (radiallahu anh) would say, "You have spoken the truth." When he had finished informing him, Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) said, "I testify that you are the true Messenger of Allah (salallahu 'alahi wa sallam)," upon which the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, "And I testify that you are indeed the most truthful (as-siddiq)." This is stated in al-Tafsir al-Kabir.

According to a narration, Rasulullaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "Everyone I called to Islaam expressed some hesitation and doubts except Abu Bakr. When I mentioned Islaam to him, he neither hesitated nor expressed any doubts (but accepted immediately)."

Hadhrat Aa'isha (radiallaahu 'anha) narrates that her father Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) was a close friend of Rasulullaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) even during the Period of Ignorance. One day, Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) left home to meet Rasulullaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). When he met Rasulullaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), he said, "O Abul Qaasim! Why is it that you are no longer present in the gatherings of your people? Why do they accuse you of speaking ill of their forefathers?" Rasulullaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "I am the Rasul of Allaah and am calling you towards Allaah." As soon as Rasulullaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) had completed, Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) accepted Islaam.

When Rasulullaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) had left Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh), there was none between the mountains of Makkah happier than Rasulullaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) because Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) had accepted Islaam.

Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) then met Hadhrat Uthmaan bin Affaan (radiallaahu 'anh), a dhrat Talha bin Ubaydill (radiallaahu 'anh), Hadhrat Zubayr bin Awwaam(radiallaahu 'anh) and Hadhrat Sa'd bin Abi Waqqaas (radiallaahu 'anh), all of whom accepted Islaam.

The following day, Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) met Hadhrat Uthmaan bin Madh'oon (radiallaahu 'anh), Hadhrat Abu Ubaydah bin Jarraah (radiallaahu 'anh), Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan bin Awf (radiallaahu 'anh), Hadhrat Abu Salma bin Abdil Asad (radiallaahu 'anh) and Hadhrat Arqam bin Abil Arqam (radiallaahu 'anh), all of whom also readily accepted Islaam.

Narrated Amr bin Al-Aas (radiallahu anhu): The Prophet of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) deputed me to lead the army of Dat as-Salasil. I came to him and said: "Who is the dearest person to you amongst all of mankind?" He said: "A'isha." I asked "Who amongst men?" He said: "Her father (i.e. Abu Bakr)..." [Bukhari and Muslim]

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (radiallaahu 'anh), is reported to have said, "I heard the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), saying, "Whoever spends a pair of something in Allaah's cause will be called from all the gates of Jannah (Paradise).' O Allaah's Slave! This is good. 'He who is amongst those who pray, will be called from the gate of prayer (in Paradise); he who is from the people who perform Jihaad (in the Cause of Allaah 'azza wa jal) will be called from the gate of Jihaad; he who is from those who give in charity will be called from the gate of charity; and he who is from amongst those who observe fast will be called from the gate of ar-Rayyaan.'

Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh), 'He who will be called from all those gates is in no need of anything; will anyone be called from all of those gates, O Messenger of Allaah?' The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) replied, 'Yes, and I hope you will be among them, Abu Bakr.'

Abu Sa'eed al-Khudriyy (radiallaahu 'anh) reports, that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: 'The most bountiful of men unto me in his companionship and sacrifice of his wealth is Abu Bakr. If I were to take an intimate friend other than my Lord, I would take Abu Bakr. But what binds us is brotherhood of Islaam and its love.' (Bukhari and Muslim)

Hadhrat Abu Ad-Dardaa' (radiallaahu 'anh) narrates: I was sitting with the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), when Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) came, greeted us, and then said: 'There was a dispute between me and 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anh), and I made him angry. Then I felt remorse, followed him, and asked him to forgive me, but he refused, so I come to you, (O Messenger of Allah - sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam).' The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said thrice, 'May Allaah forgive you, Abu Bakr.'

In the meantime Hadhrat 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anh) repented and felt sorry for what he had done. He went to Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh)'s house, but he did not find him at home. Then he came to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) (and related the story to him). The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)'s displeasure could be read from his face. Seeing this, Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) felt sorry for Hadhrat 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anh), and knelt in front of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), saying twice, 'O Allaah's Messenger! By Allaah, I was more at fault (than 'Umar).'

Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, 'O people, when I said I have been sent as a Messenger of Allaah to you all, you said 'You are telling a lie,' while Abu Bakr said 'You have spoken the truth,' and he gave me solace with his person and property. Will you leave my companion alone once and for all? Will you leave my companion alone once and for all?!' After this, Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) was never harmed again.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiallaahu 'anh) narrates: Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) once said: 'Who amongst you is fasting today?' Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) said, 'I am.' Then the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) asked again, 'Who amongst you has been in a funeral procession?' Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) said, 'I have.' The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) asked further, 'Who amongst you has visited a sick person today?' Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh) said, 'I have.'

Thereupon Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "Whoever combines in himself (all these virtues) will enter Jannah (Paradise)." (Muslim)

Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anhuma) quotes the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) to have said to Hadhrat Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh): "You are my companion at the *al-Hawd (Fount) and my companion in the cave." (at-Tirmidhi)

*This is the fount mentioned in surah al-Kawthar. On Judgement Day, righteous Muslims will be allowed to drink from this fount, after which they will not grow thirsty ever again.

Sayyiduna 'Abdullaah Ibn Ahmad (radiallaahu 'anh) reports with a good chain of narrators, that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaih wa sallam) said, "Abu Bakr is my intimate friend and my affable companion in the cave."

Anas Ibn Malik (radiallaahu 'anh) narrates, The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) ascended the Mountain of Uhud accompanied by Abu Bakr (radiallaahu 'anh), Umar (radiallahu 'anh), and Uthman (radiallaahu 'anh). The mountain shook beneath them. The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) hit it with his foot and said, "O Uhud! Be firm, for on you there is none but a Prophet, a Siddeeq (Abu Bakr), and a Martyr (i.e. and two Martyrs)." (Bukhari, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi)
