As-Salaam alaikum,
It has been related by at-Tirmidhi from a Prophetic tradition transmitted by Abu Amama, may Allah be pleased with him, wherein the Prophet, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, said :
"My Lord showed me that He could transform for me the entire riverbed of Makkah into gold. I said : 'No O Lord, rather I prefer to be full one day and hungry the next. So that when I am hungry I will beseech You, and when I am full, I will thank You".
The reason for his lack of sedation most of the time with food and drink was because of the few things he possessed voluntarily, in that they were available, but he preferred others over himself and expended them on others in order to achieve the pleasure of his Lord.
