As-Salaam alaikum,
In the devotional landscape of the Sufis, the Prophet, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, is alive. The pure love and devotion of the Prophet is sacred mystery for the Sufis, and through that love of the one who is loved makes his epiphany or appearances.
How does this mystical process happen? Sheikh Sanusi, a student of Sheikh Ahmad Ibn Idris al-Fasi (1760-1837) gave us some clue :--
"This is founded on an inner submergence accompanied by a visible manifestation when you see the Prophet himself, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam. This is the outcome when you try to follow him in your words and deeds, when you busy your tongue with saying the Tasliya (benediction upon the Prophet) and repeating it at every moment in public and in private until the glorification of the Prophet, namely the Tasliya, overwhelms your heart and permeates your deepest self, so that you quiver when you hear him mentioned, and the vision of him takes hold of your heart and you see his form before your inner eye.
Then God will bestow upon you His Clemency, outwardly and inwardly. Thereafter, you will see a vision of the Prophet in many of your dreams while asleep as a first step, Secondly you will see him unexpectedly while between awake and sleeping state. Finally you will see him awake. "
What steps can a Sufi take to cultivate a deep connection with the Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, according to Sheikh Sanusi? How does this process lead to experiencing visions of the Prophet?
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
