Question
What is meant by the Hadith that says there is bad omens in women horses or homes?
Answer
There are numerous narrations of this Hadith which must be considered while discussing this topic. From amongst them are:
1. Those narrations that suggest that bad omens exist:
The Messenger of Allah said (salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), “ A bad omen is found in women, houses, and horses.”
(Sahih Bukhari 2858, Muslim 5765)
2. Those narrations that suggest bad omens don’t exist
The Messenger of Allah said (salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam): “If there were bad omens in anything then [they would be] found in women, houses and horses,”
(Sahih Bukhari 2859, Muslim 5770)
The Messenger of Allah said (salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam): “There is no bad omen”. (Sahih Muslim 5759)
The Messenger of Allah (salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “Bad omens are shirk, Bad omens are shirk, Bad omens are shirk!”
(Abu Dawud 3910, Al-Timidhi 1706)
Interpretations
The scholars generally agree that the superstitious belief of bad omens which the pre-Islamic Arabs use to believe in does not exist and it is not permissible to believe in. Ibn Al-Arabi (rahimuhul Allah) states, “A bad omen (shu’m/tiyarah) refers to the belief that something bad has effected you due to the cause of something related to you through ownership or association and thus considering oneself ill-omened
(Al-Masālik 7/543).
In relation to this it is reported that the Messenger of Allah (salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “Bad omens are shirk, Bad omens are shirk, Bad omens are shirk!”
(Abu Dawud 3910, Al-Timidhi 1706)
The reason it is considered shirk (and thus unlawful to believe) is because it entails that omens have power independent of Allah to change and affect things.
