I just wondered what people do when 'Muslims' follow you around and ask for money on the streets. A few days ago I just parked up on the main road and I hadn't even got out of the car and a guy said salam and narrated his story about being homeless and needs a place to stay.

Anyway in the past, unfortunately I would have had a cold heart in these situations and would tell the person, I don't have time, money or get lost. Overtime after learning more about the deen I understand that Muslims are suppose to help others. Also not all people that mention their sad stories are lying, some are true and have had a difficult life.

I decided to start talking about the deen with him and not in a degrading way but asked him do you ever ask Allah? Because you should ask him, pray your salah, read the quran. He mentioned he does not how to read the quran properly, when he was in prison somebody did try helping him. We were walking and talking and he was honest and mentioned he did not do anything but inshaAllah he will. So I said to him read istighfaar, which he did, read durood shareef and made it clear please do not do it for me, do it for Allah and he will help you.

I just wanted to know what other people do or have done. Or is there anything else I should say.

Well I think you tend to know which ones are making a business out of begging and the ones that maybe genuine.

But for the benefit of the doubt if it's someone I know 100% who are begging as a business, with gold rings etc. I don't give. The ones which I doubt but maybe genuine I give, because what's the worse they can do with halal money buy food or clothes.

Mostly I give to people who don't ask for it, because I know it's genuine. Homeless, people going through bins, I think your heart tells you when someones in need.

If you want to give, don't wait to be asked just give what you desire.

I believe if someone asks give even if it's 1 or 50p because you don't know which penny will save you from the hellfire. Just a personal opinion not a ruling.

Their maybe a day you may be in the same position, and people may caste you off as a street begger, we don't know which amal Allah will like and accept from us, so take the opportunity.

I'm aware there are rulings pertaining to giving charity to Muslims and non Muslims, but I'm not clarifying any rulings here, to me a human life is a human life.
