Question

Is the following a hadith and can we quote it?

The one who is silent about the truth is a dumb Shaytan

I was given the following reference for it: Al-Mu’jam al-Kabir-Tabarani.

Answer

I have not come across this hadith in the mentioned reference, or any of the authentic hadith books.

This has been cited as the statement of Abu ‘Ali Ad Daqqaq (rahimahullah) -a saint of the past, and should be quoted as such.

Abul Qasim Al Qushayri (rahimahullah) mentions: “I heard Abu ‘Ali Ad Daqqaq (rahimahullah) say, ‘Whoever remains silent from the truth is a dumb devil’,

(Ar Risalah Al Qushayriyyah, pg. 62. Also see Imam Nawawi’s commentary on Sahih Muslim, vol. 1 pg. 209 and Al Adhkar, hadith: 1005)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,

The brother has acknowledged and has since changed his signature.

However, the same example can be used for Fazaail e A'maal. There are plenty of such narrations attributed to the Prophet but we ACCEPT them as Virtuous only and do not use them for Imaan/Fiqh/Aqidah etc.

So we take the caution of NOT attributing it to the Prophet with a possibility that it may!

Quote:
As you know a number of Deobandis today say that some of the Hadith in Fazaail Amal are fabricated and should not be treated as Ahadith. Whereas other scholars claim that there is nothing wrong in taking such statements as Ahadith. Whose view is the layman advised to go with. Some Deobandis today are actually advising people to avoid Fazaail Amaal based on the fact that their research has not been able to determine any reliable chain for some of the Ahadith. Such claims are made despite the fact that every scholar is limited in how many of the thousands of volumes of Ahadith books he is able scour through in order to determine that the Hadith does not exist.

Whose advice should the layman follow? Is he permitted to quote such statements as Hadith?

One such Hadith quoted by our elders is: "The One Who is Silent About the Truth is a Dumb Shaytaan."

I've seen the Hadith quoted from al-Mu'jam al-Kabeer, and Abu Dawud or Tirmidhi but with no exact references.

Now I understand that al-Mu'jam is over 70 volumes in length. If an Aalim is unable to find the Hadith in al-Mu'jam, or any of the thousands of books of Ahadith, should he:

1) Claim that the statement is not a Hadith?

2) Advise people to adopt caution and not to regard this as a Hadith?

3) Say that there's no problem in quoting it as a Hadith since our elders quote it as such?

When there's a difference amongst the Ulama regarding a statement being a Hadith or not, as maybe the case with the Hadith above or a number of Hadith from Fazaail Amal, which position is the layman obliged to adopt? Does have the option to choose from both?

Ajeeb situation!

On one hand people discuss Fatwa vs Taqwa for days on end and even Fatwa dictates to not even accidentally project words into the Mubarak mouth of Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam).

Wallahi! Where does Fatwa vs Taqwa go when standards need to applied?

I am going off the forum for a week or so, this has really despressed me considerably!

Look on the bright side, He (Deoband) has opted for option 2 and since changed his signature. With regards to the post, well he definitely has forgotten to update it. (confirmed)

Obviously this is not good to be silent even that you know the truth.
