As-Salaam alaikum,
When Sayyadina Ahmad Rufa'i, may Allah be Merciful to him, would see an elderly person, he would tell his people the following narration:
The Prophet, Sallallahu alaihi Wasallam, said :-
"The one who honours an elderly Muslim, Allah will appoint someone that will honour him when he becomes old." (Sunan Tirmidhi).
Thus whoever respects an elderly Muslim only because he is old (thinking) his worships are greater than mine and he was a Muslim before me, then he will witness in the world that the people will respect him when he grows old.
Allama shaami RA says that "Whoever is of the opinion that it is not necessary to follow the elders, he is a zindeeq (disbeliever).
It is stated by shah waliullah RA, "You must read books which the elders have trusted, you can't decide which book to study"
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
