al-Imaam ash-Shaafi’ee - rahimahullaah used to recite these verses of poetry      - :وكان الإمام الشافعي رحمه اللَه ينشد

“O my soul! It is not, except a few days of patience;

As if the extent were but a few dreams.

O my soul! Pass quickly on through this world;

And leave it, for indeed life lies ahead of it.”

We find fault with the world, while the faults lie in our own selves.
The world is not at fault; except that we are full of flaws.
We make fun of the world for no reason,
But if others spoke about us, we were no better than be mocked at.
A wolf does not eat the flesh of another of its kind,
But we eat the flesh of one anther knowingly

              “Behold! Indeed everything other than Allaah is only falsehood

And every pleasure no matter what, is bound to cease…”

                                                                                                                                            [Labid]

Knowledge is what benefits

Ash-Shaafi’ee (rahimahullaah) said:

“Knowledge is that which benefits not that which is memorised”

Ash-Shaafi’ee (rahimahullaah) said:

“Whoever claims to have gathered in his heart the love of this world and the love of its Creator (Allaah), has indeed lied.”

Oppressor of his own self

Ash-Shaafi’ee (rahimahullaah) said:

“The one who oppresses himself the most is:

The one who humbles himself for one who does not honour him
And strives in the friendship of one who does not benefit him
And accepts praise from one who does not know him”

The Arts of knowledge

Whoever learns Qur’aan, then his value becomes great
Whoever speaks in Fiqh (learns it), his capacity grows
Whoever writes ahadeeth, his evidence strengthens
Whoever examines into language, his nature softens
Whoever contemplates the reckoning, his opinion becomes sound
And whoever does not protect himself, his knowledge does not benefit him

Whoever slanders to you about others, will slander about you
And whoever reports to you, will soon report about you

Do not sit long with a sad friend. When you go to a garden, do you look at the weeds? Spend more time with the roses and jasmines. (taken into context)

To completely trust in God is to be like a child who knows deeply that even if he does not call for the mother, the mother is totally aware of his condition and is looking after him.

Let the Days

Let the days do as they please
And be optimistic when destiny decrees
Do not despair due to the events of nights past
For the events of this world were not meant to last

And be a man who, in the face of fear is strong
With loyalty and forbearance adorned
And if your mistakes are many amongst the folk
And you wish to have for those mistakes a cloak

Then conceal them with generosity as hence
Every fault is covered as –is said- by benevolence
And do not show weakness to an enemy
For dispersion of foes is a calamity

Generosity cannot be hoped from the miserly
For no water exists in the Fire for the thirsty
And your rizq will not decrease though late it may arrive
And it will not increase though one may slave and strive

No sadness lasts forever, nor any felicity
Nor any state of poverty or one of luxury
If you are the owner of a heart that is content
Then you and the owner of the world are equivalent

And for him upon whose horizon death descends,
No earth can offer him protection, nor any sky defend
The earth of Allah is certainly vast and infinite
But if decree descends, then all the sky constricts

Let the days betray every once in a while
For there is no medicine that will protect from death

Poem by Imam Shafi (rahmatullahi alayhi)
