Slavery To Freedom

Free a Slave on the Day of the Eclipse

Modern slavery exists today in the form of bonded labour in which poor families are forced into slavery due to debts they have inherited from previous generations.

Millions are estimated to live as bonded labourers in South Asia. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan estimates that there are as many 50,000 bonded families in the province of Sindh alone.

Fettered with debts before they were even born, many of these families, and sadly their progeny, are resigned to a life of graft and subservience.

In 2008, in a unique initiative, Ummah Welfare Trust began the task of paying off the debts of bonded labourers in Sindh and liberating them.

The debts of over a thousand families have since been settled Alhamdulillah. Upon freedom, these families were provided with food, clothing and enrolled on to an Islamic course.

Asma RadhyAllahu 'anha says:
'Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ instructed people to free slaves during the solar eclipse.'
(al Bukhari)

In response to the rare event of a Solar eclipse, Ummah Welfare Trust has opened up this project for donors wishing to practise the Sunnah.

A rare opportunity, you can free one slave for just £100. This amount will settle an individual's debts and afford them the chance to shape their own life inshaAllah.

Follow the Sunnah and free a slave on this day of the eclipse.

IMPORTANT NOTES
i) Approximately 40 families in Sindh (or approximately 240 persons) need support for this project, which has been made available solely for those wishing to follow the Sunnah on the day of an eclipse. The project will close once sufficient donations have been received. Surplus donations will be used to feed, clothe and educate these families.
ii) Ummah Welfare Trust staff will not be able answer phone calls between 9:00am and 10:00am on Friday 20th March due to praying Salaatul Kusoof. Those wishing to make a donation during this time should do so online.

Ummah Welfare Trust (100% Donations policy) has a Slavery to Freedom project which will only be open for a few more hours.

So take this opportunity and donate £100 to act upon this Sunnah.

We might not get the opportunity to act upon this Sunnah again.
