According to Wikipedia and the news articles, Khuzaima Qutbuddin is the deceased Burhanuddin's (half) brother. Saifuddin is Burhanuddin's son and Qutbuddin's nephew.

Are they an influential group if they only number a million?

The bohri women wear a different kind of " hijab", Its basically a scarf with a long skirt and is usually made up of coloured fabric.. I have seen fancy ones with laces and all.. and floral too.. I have seen little girls wearing. fancy caps.. they are a little bigger as compared to the normal ones.. (saw them wearing these to madressa) besides that they are a kind of shias..

someone went to their house and there were pictures all ove the house.. and their way of performing Saka is very different and strange too (I can't recall whether this was about bohris or someone else)

Bohrees are Kaafirs because they take Bay't to their Imam (Misaq in their religion) and this means that if you disobey the Imam you become Kaafir.

Imam decides what is prayed in Namaz (they don't have our Namaz) and other acts of worship...

Misaaq:

Every Bohra has to take Misaaq (Bay't) upon reaching puberty. The words differ and they NEVER publicise the exact wordings but in essence these are Ismaili Shias so their religion is based on ABSOLUTE AGREEMENT and SUBMISSION to Imam.

One Misaaq on the web is as follows:

  1. "And if the Imam of the time or his Dai calls upon you to war against the enemy then you should make war. You should help with your life and property. And you should obey the Imam of the time or his Dai sincerely......Say yes.
  2. And whatever the Imam of the time or his Dai orders you to obey you should obey the Dai and you shall not become a sinner (by disobedience); and you shall not become hostile to the Dai. You shall not falsify the Dai.
  3. You shall keep up the command of the Imam and that Imam is Imam Tayeb Abul Qasim Amirul-Mominin. He is your Imam.
  4. And you shall accept the order of the Dai of Imam in all things. And you shall not use that thing which the Dai shall forbid you, and you shall not take steps (towards it). You shall love him whom the Dai loves. You shall be enemy to him with whom the Dai is hostile. You shall war against him whom the Dai makes war. Any person transgressing those engagements to the Dai is outside the pale of religion. Whether he be great or small, whether he is a close relation or a distant one you shall not have any intercourse with him. You shall not correspond with him openly or secretly. You shall not do any act calculated to be friendly to him. And by no manner or means or pretense shall see the enemy of the Dai. The enemy of the Dai is your enemy.....Say yes.
  5. And you shall attend on the summons (of) the Imam or the Dai to make religious war. At that time you shall not shirk or play the coward. You shall with all heart spend your property and your life in the cause of the Dai. You shall report fully to the Dai or to the Deputy of the Dai any person who transgresses the covenant of the Imamuzamam...Say yes.
  6. And you shall not permit yourself to be induced to withhold assistance from the Dai, service and obedience to him, and prevent you from carrying out the order of the Dai. Further you shall not offer any disbeliever to turn you away from taking the oath of the covenant to the Dai. You shall render perfect service with your property and with the offer of your life (to the Dai). The master of your life is the Dai or the Imam of the time.....Say yes.
  7.     ...(This has been omitted from ex. 17)
  8.     ...(This has been omitted from ex. 17)
  9. And you shall be pleased by the order of the Dai of the Imam. The Dai shall raise among you or degrade among you persons as he likes. He shall gift to and shall deprive persons as he pleases. The Dai shall reward persons and shall punish them in his discretion. The Dai shall smile upon or shall break his wrath on whomsoever he thinks fit. You shall be pleased in that which Dai is pleased....Say yes.
  10. The person to whom the oath is due enjoins to this effect that if a person on whom it is made obligatory by me to keep faith to the oath openly or secretly breaks it the defaulter is forsaken by God the Creator of the Earth and heavens, the framer of the limbs of the creatures, the conferer of blessings on him, and the Bestower of health. The breaker of the oath is shut out from the books Tawrat (laws of Moses), Injeel (The Bible), Zaboor (Psalms of David), and the Holy Quran. He is also deprived of the perfect words (Blessings of the Imam)....Say yes.
  11. If a person taking the oath breaks it, all his possessions, i.e. moveables, cash, housing, utensils, jewels, ornaments, carriages, horses, cattle, milking cows, she buffaloes, slaves, males and females and all worldly materials become unlawful for him. All his property is liable to be looted and to be distributed among the poor and the needy. When he takes the oath again and accepts all the terms of that covenant then his things become lawful to him and then only he is entitled to get his things back...say yes.
  12. All the benefits which he had already enjoyed (from his possessions) becomes unlawful i.e. with a prospective effect unless he takes the oath afresh (the past enjoyments) do not become lawful. Say yes. All the slaves males and females of the breaker of the oath become free and the defaulter loses all ownership over them until a fresh oath and he keeps faith with the covenant...say yes.
  13. And if the breaker of the covenant has a wife that wife becomes forbidden to him. The breach of covenant has the effect of three Talaqs (divorce) against the wife i.e. Kataee , Haraj and Sunnat (three forms of divorce). The woman can never marry him again, neither can he take her as a wife.. say yes. If the breaker of the oath performs Hajj thirty times with naked feet even then God shall not forgive him his sin (in breaking the covenant) nor God shall accept his Hajj. But if he takes the oath again by the true Dai's covenant, his master, then and then alone God shall accept his Hajj, his prayers, fasts and other good deeds. ... say yes.
  14. And the breaker of the covenant accursed of God by that curse which was inflicted on Iblis, the Satan the effect of which was that paradise was lost to Satan and hell became his inheritance.
  15. And the breaker of the covenant shall face his God as Kafir and apostate after his death. He is beyond redemption by the power of God. He will be thrown on his own soul and shall curse him and shall extend hell to him which hell is the worst of all places. There is no God but the Merciful and Benevolent. The Defaulter turns away his face from the worship of God and turns it to the worship of idols. All Kafirs worship idols and thus shall become attached to the idol and the grace of God shall destroy the breaker of the oath with rapidity and shall confine him to hell in which there is nothing but torture...say yes.
  16. There is no freedom for your soul but loyalty to the covenant and there is no salvation for you but in fulfilling the terms of the covenant. You have made God your witness and the testimony of God is enough...say yes.
  17. You heard my words and you are pleased with my conditions. The person to whom the covenant is due say that you took upon your neck the obligation to hear the covenant of God and you took the mighty oath and you gave oath of allegiance which is very strong and which for our Lord the Imam Tayeb Abul Qasim Amiril Mominin may the peace of God be on him and his holy ancestors and the generous descendants who are expected till the day of resurrection.
  18. When Imam Tayeb went in seclusion owing to the high handedness of the oppressors, he left in Dawat three ranks behind him, namely, the rank of Dai, the rank of Mazoon and the rank of Mukasir. Owing to the existence of these three ranks the existence of Imam of the time is known to be in existence. The present Dai of the Imam of the time is the grand Maulana the singular Sayedna Zainuddin, may God prolong his life and his Mazoon is Bhai Saheb Shaikh Adam and his Mukasir is Bhai Saheb Hibtula Bhai. Whoever recognizes Zainuddin and these three ranks he recognizes the imam of the time...say yes.
  19. Then be pleased that you have given the oath of allegiance to the Imam and his Dai, God says in the Quran to Prophet: "O Mohammed the people do not give the oath of allegiance to you, rather they give it to God. The hand of God is above the hands of all people&quot. Whoever breaks the covenant his soul will be tormented and whoever fulfills the covenant God will bless him and will highly recompense him.
  20. The person from whom the Misaq is taken says that God may keep firm to the covenant and it may not be that he may treat the covenant as a mere deposit. May God grant you and me, the true believers, to be faithful to the covenant and my God keep you and me steadfast to His obedience and the obedience of God's prophet and the obedience of Wali of God, the present Imam and his Dai and may God make it complete for you and us to remain firm for the mercy of God through the good end. And (all) praise is due to God, the one, the great Avenger; and peace of God be on Mohammed the Selected and on his wasi, Preserver, and on his Progeny, the good, the pure, the righteous. And Salaam!
  21. It is written on the 10th of the month of Rabiul Awal by the slave of Grand Dai Maulana Zainuddin, may God prolong his life, Ahmedji the son of Mulla Nurkhanji in the year 1248 (hijra) in the town of Ajmer, may God the Exalted protect him."

Hot press of the press!

A person emailed me this morning and pointed to an old article on www.central-mosque.com and stated that this article is incorrect (about Bohras) and he is willing to assist me in writing about this group. He stated that www.central-mosque.com is a treasure of information and it doesn’t befit for us to have false information.

He pointed out to this article that and also suggested that I merely quote Encyclopaedia Britannica as Authentic and not do (individual research). At this point I thought that this person is a “Muslim”. As conversation went on I began to suspect that he is actually a “Bohra”. I removed the old article (2 paragraphs 10 year old anyways) and then sent him a link to the Aga Khan Article and said that sure I am ready to research and write specifically about Bohras.

Read for yourself...

Bohri:

jazakallaho brother Abu Salih - that is much appreciated.
if you would like any assistance with the Dawoodi Bohra article I would be happy to help.
I would recommend the following link for a nice piece on the Bohra by Oxford Islamic World Encyclopeadia

ismaili.net/mirrors/73_bhoras/bohras.html

hafazakallaho

Mustafa

Muadh Khan:

Jazakallahu Khayran

Bohri:

dear brother - the links you have given are to a group who do not consider the main body of dawoodi bohras as being correct in their thoughts. they consider themselves as progressives who are looking to modernize the faith;
in the very first line of the first link you have given above the author writes

"I have no hesitation in admitting that I am not an Islamic scholar"

You are requested to use unbiased, fact based articles if you wish to write anything about the Bohras. That is why I gave you a completely neutral link. Similar material is also found on Encyclopaedia Britannica.
If you wish to add that many - perhaps yourself included - have reservations about the Bohras then that is for you to consider but totally biased articles do your website no favours as a place to find information.

kind regards

Muadh Khan:

There is nothing on the website at all. I am saying that research needs to be done.

However send me a link of the Misaq from a site of your choice.

Bohri:

ok - thank you for your conisderation of my comments.

here is a brief link regarding the philosophy of the misaaq.

http://www.amatullahaai.com/aahed_n_misak_eng.html

Muadh Khan:

Now suspect that this guy is actually not Muslim but Bohri so throws a testing question...

So which side of the 53rd Imam are you backing?  huzaima Qutbuddin or Mufaddal Saifuddin? Has the Bombay High Court decided yet?

Also can I have the exact words of the Misaq (not the concept) and if you are ok with these words please let me know:

http://dawoodi-bohras.com/index.php?mact=News,cntnt01,print,0&cntnt01articleid=61&cntnt01showtemplate=false&cntnt01returnid=97

Bohri:

the text you have is from a wikipedia entry.
Having given the misaq myself I can say that the wordings are inaccurate to large degrees - several things have been added to exaggerate the sense that it is designed to 'enslave'.
I do not have a text for you - the brief that is given is all that is available.
as to my allegiance - may I ask why you are asking?

And it is not 'imam' - it is 'al-Dai al-Mutlaq'

Muadh Khan:

Pretty certain that this guy is a Bohri so throws another question...

When a Meesaq is taken which words are used according to you. Not the concept but the words themselves.

Bohri:

The misaq is a commitment to the Kalemah, the Prophet, the Imam, the Dai and the Shariah and all of its tenets and obligations.
The person who gives the misaq is accepting obedience to the Prophet, the Imam and the Dai depending on the era in which he is living - today it is the Dai.
He promises to follow the Shariah; salah, sawm, zakah, hajj.

without access to a text I would be irresponsible in suggesting which words are exactly correct or not.

Muadh Khan:

I understand that. My questions are:

  1. Which Dai do you accept to be the Dai of today?
  2. What happens if you chose to disobey his words?
  3. What about Wilayah isn't it a part of Pillars?

No response!

salaam

gujis replace letters with other letters all the time. replacing b with w is one of them. others are interchanging z with j and vice versa. it is usually the older generation or the desi ones who do that.

bohra's are easy to spot.

the women usually wear a heavily patterned or flowery jilbab which reminds me of the bed settee covers my grandma used to use.

and the men usually wear a particular white cap with gold embroidered patterns on it.

the indian frozen food company maysum is owned by bohra, so i would stay away from them as they have no regard for our food being halal or haram as they do not consider us muslim.

yes this is correct and yes brother Muadh, the B is replaced with a W/V (depending on how its pronounced

Courtesy of wikipedia:
Sunni Vohras or Sunni Bohras, (Arabic: سنی بوہرہ‎) are a Sunni Muslim community found in the province of Sindh in Pakistan and the state of Gujarat in India

Q: so are the Bohras same as the Dawoodi Bohras or different?
And
Q: Are the Khojas the same as well?

Quote:
The Khojas (Sindhi: کوجا، خوجا، خواجا) are a group of diverse people who converted to Islam in South Asia. The word Khoja derives from Khwaja, a Persian/Turkic honorific title (Persian: خواجه‎).

In India, most Khojas live in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and the city of Hyderabad. Many Khojas have also migrated and settled over the centuries in East Africa, Europe and North America. The Khoja were by then adherents of Nizari Ismailism. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in the aftermath of the Aga Khan Case a significant minority separated and adopted Twelver Shi'ism or Sunni Islam, while the majority remained Nizari Ismaili.[1]

Khala,

These are all basically Ismaili Shias

www.central-mosque.com/index.php/Beliefs/aga-kahnees.html

  1. Different flavours of Bohras
  2. Different flavors of Khojas
  3. Different flavours of Aga Khanees

Now Bohras are engaged in a multi-Crore Law suit for the 53rd Imam in Mumbai High Court and Dawoodi Bohras are split into:

  1. Bohras who accept Mufaddal Saifuddin
  2. Bohras who accept Khuzaima Qutbuddin

Then one day one Mufaddal Saifuddin will wake up and switch to CornFlakes and the followers will be called Mufaddal Saifuddin Corn Flakes Bohras

Others will say NO and stick to original Rice Krispies which Hazrat (enjoyed for 60 years) and will be called  Mufaddal Saifuddin Rice Krispies Bohras

At the end of the day these are Ismaili Shias and their religion demands COMPLETE SUBMISSION to their Imam so there will always be split after split.

You are asking about "Bohras, Khojas, Aga Khanees" they are all Indian/Pakistani names in the Arab/African lands they be called Hummus Shias or whatever...

In China they may be Chicken Corn Soap Bohars
