For starters...

The practical concrete steps will come later but first the mind-set needs to change! Some random thoughts (facts):

For a large number of Muslims the shenanigans within the British society Trojan horse, UKIP, BNP, Terrorism, (Education) reform etc. are relevant and impact their lives. At the very least in areas where there is a significant Muslim population grass root political participation is necessary e.g. I don’t necessarily agree with the views of Mufti Shah Sadruddin (*) but I agree with his participation and the principle behind it.

The behind the scene (encouragement) of politicians like Jack Straw by high level Deobandi Ulama & Mashaykh and then public (apathy to politics) is a disastrous strategy. Similarly behind the scene backing of Channel Islam (and funding it) while public aversion to TV is also not working.

Then we need to pick our allies for our strategy within this country. We can’t make Taqleed and Tassawuff our overarching criteria and let everything (including whom we support and withouhold support from) be governed by that principle.

Let there be a Shura and deliberate the issues of Muslims in this country. At the moment; (Deobandi) Muslims live an isolationist lifestyle which I don’t believe to be conducive to or helpful in the long term to the Muslims of this country.

Shaykh (Dr) Haith Haddaad (HA), is he perfect and successful? No but certainly trying to do his best in difficult circumstances.

With 750+ Mosques and 8+ fulltime Darul-ulooms what is the impact of Deobandees in providing guidance to British Muslims?

I have to agree with London786 the responsibility is an individual one for each and every muslim.
Heard alot of Pro-activism talk back in the 1990's years later here is the situation MCB had some impact for a while were swept aside by a media onslaught. The Scholars and individuals who were pro-active and encouraging others to be more pro-active have either been swept aside by the media onslaught or compromised their stance like Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, and Suhaib Webb and worse still others like Usamahg Hassan, Majid Nawaz have gone full circle and are now working against Islam.

I think we will have to be satisfied with individual efforts of ulemah in their respective fields.

Muadh what you are saying makes perfect sense in an ideal world. The problem is we don't live in an ideal world. Let us say we make shaykh haitham al haddad our leader in affairs. I am a big fan of the shaykh but do you think the Muslims will agree on him? Then the issue with shaykh haitham is that his English is not that great. His debate with Tariq ramadan showed this. The other thing is with the media he has no chance. He will automatically be labelled all sorts and maybe even banned from speaking as has happened. The same with mufti sadrudeen. He has all the above with some added baggage as well. I agree that politicial participation is neccesary and something should be done. At the same time I feel maybe it's too messy for religious people and therefore we should back candidates who have some leaning to Islam though neccesarily not Islamic. Once again these are controversial opinions which require careful thought. The best thing seems to be (once again controversial) is that the Muslims should all join political parties and become members and lobby from the inside. That way you can do a lot especially locally. Yes, there will be a huge media onslaught like in Tower Hamlets but for now this seems to be the way foreword. i.e. each and every single Muslim should join a political party and then work from there. Am I ready to do it??? Nope as I hate all political parties. This is where our problem comes. With regards to jack straw it is comical how he was voted in by the Blackburn Muslims. At the same time some argue that we can't change foreign policy and therefore should work locally and if Straw was allowing Islam and mosques to flourish locally then we should carry on voting for him. The argument is a weak one but politics is an issue where agreement is almost impossible.

Bismillah.

More political participation....! Most of what you have stated was discussed and put into action back in the 1990's. Infact during the 1990's and after more then a decade of Conservative party rule, there was a massive campaign to encourage muslims to join the Labour party. The Labour Party was at the time regarded as an immigrant friendly party. And we had our very first elected Muslim member of Parliament, in Muhammad Sarwar in the 1997 elections. When we have had quite a few muslim members of parliament since none of them have done anything for the Muslim community. Subsequently there was a campaign to encourage muslims to join other political parties nothing was accomplished.

The Islamic Party of Britain was established in 1989 by converts David Musa Pidock and Sahib Mustaqim Bleher and it is still active and in that they have a website. Despite contesting seats in various elections they have failed to win any seats.

In local elections The Justice For Kashmir Party, won quite a few seats in Birmingham city council in the 1990's and was for a time I believe the third largest party in the Birmingham council. The objective was to highlight the issue of Kashmir and call for the implementation of UN resolutions concerning the right of Kashmiris, to self determination. They were able to accomplish zilch.

Fact is for the last 30 years or so Government policies have been dictated by the Tabloid press. If any leader of a political party tries to bring pro-muslim or muslim friendly policies the Press will launch a campaign and cause a public backlash.

I fail to see how rehashing and re-trying stuff that already resulted in zero accomplishment a generation ago
(during a time which was less hostile to muslims then it is today) is the way forward.

Sounds like tourism and a holiday package to me.

From traveling on camels and studying in moonlight and candle light it's evolved to this. And we wonder why is Islamic knowledgeand Deen is so weak and disappearing from the world. Why petty feuds and differences is so rampant and why it's an injustice to call these studies "seeking 'ilm"

i think these type of courses, offered by al-qalam, bayyinah, al maghrib, al kauthar are catered to more affleunt muslims, probably from educated middle class families, the jamati islami type or the ones totally disinclined to deen.

apparently, specificially aiming your efforts at the affluent in society is sunnah as leaders of quraysh were given special dawah?...not to mention, it's a lot more profitable. i kno most of the guys from my uni going to Al-M or Al-K were very rich international students.

also, some of the instructors probably come from such families so it's easier for them to relate to and connect with such students. us paindoos are harder to handle, so we are restricted to tabligi jamat and segregated annual conferences... :(

The first issue is elevating Jumu'ah Khutbah which is an act of worship to a level where it has been turned into a PR machine.

The PR machine then needs to be tuned and then fine tuned.

Opportunity for Brother and Sisters to check out prospective marriage partners, under the guise of a Public speaking course?

Lets face it if it was a brothers only course the maximum you could charge for a 3 day, course is about $60,
at $20 a day, but knowing there is going to be sisters from affluent backgrounds who are studying degrees in Bio medical science, Engineering, and Design and Architerature etc at the course,.. suddenly the value of the course goes right up.

I was actually listening to a course on CD, and in there, the Mufti (very well known in the UK) said that there was a brother who proposed to a sister in the class via the Shaykh and he commended it. Not sure what to say really, because I couldn't tell if they were segregated or not, but I know exactly what you mean.
