4 Saudi Arabian Astronomer: The Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr is likely to fall on Tuesday (July 29), marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. According to Ali Al-Shukri, it will be difficult to see the crescent on Sunday because the moonlight will be dim and the moon will set around 11 minutes after the sunset.

Shawwal 1435 Calculations for Saudi Arabia:

Dr Ali Mohammad Al-Shukri (Physics Department) King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and member of Saudi's official Eastern Provence Hilal Sighting Committee states that there is no possibility of moon sighting from any Islamic countries on Sunday the 27th of July 2014. His tabled for Makkah and message is reproduced below:

Shawwal 1435 Calculations for South Africa:

SA Astronomical Observatory Predictions : The new crescent Moon can generally be seen only if it sets at least 46 minutes after the Sun has set. Astronomers at SA Astronomical Observatory have how ever sighted the Moon earlier – setting at least 33 min after sunset – from Signal Hill in Cape Town, but only if the age of the Moon is at least 24hr old at sunset. May be visible with optical aid from the southern Atlantic and the southernmost tip of Africa.

Shaykh (Mufti) Sultan Alam (HA) (Head Astronomy department, Jamitaur-Rasheed, Karachi) states that if the horizons are clear then there is clear chance of moon being sighted in Southern Pakistan and slim chance of sighting in Northern Pakistan on the 29th of Ramadhan equivalent to Monday the 28th of July 2014.

Shawwal 1435 Calculations for the world:

1 The Astronomical New Moon is on Saturday July 26, 2014 at 22:42 UT. There is no possibility of moonsighting on that day.

Heres what South Africa's Br Abdur Razzak Ebrahim posted on the ICOUK and ICOP forums. He's the brother who usually sends the reports to www.Moonsighting.com and www.icoproject.org....(since the past many years):

POSSIBILITY OF SIGHTING THE SHAWAAL HILAAL IN CAPE TOWN POST-SUNSET ON 27/07/2014

According to records compiled over the past 45 years a young waxing crescent has to satisfy certain parameter values (location of Cape Town) in order to be sighted by the naked-eye.

On the evening of 27/07/2014 the values in 3 sectors fail to meet the required minimum:-

Elongation, crescent width, and percentage illumination coupled with the magnitude.

To the best of my knowledge and experience �" the Hilaal cannot be seen on 27/07/2014.

* one of the orgs is lead by Molana Ebrahim Bham and most of us know the kind of words Mufti Desai has used when describing Molana.

Aaww. No brother. Just saying just because Mufti Desai has a view , that may not necessarily mean it's the view of the actual responsible hilal announcing org/s in S.Africa ....though most likely none of the orgs do accept such sightings. Is there any place where their sighting criterias can be looked at?

After asking multiple people I am none the wiser of the collective position of South Africans on Optical Aid, my best guess is that they don't allow it but I am not certain.

emailed UUCSA last night and their reply, recieved this morning is below (it is as per bhai AbuM reply from Mufti Desai:

Assalamualaikum

Dear Brother

Kindly note that the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) limits the
sighting of the moon to the naked eye. It does not accept sighting made via
optical aids. We are not aware of any other organization in South Africa
that approves of using optical aids.

The month of shawal is HIGHLY expected to commence on Tuesday 29 July 2014. The Crescent moon is NOT Visible for the horizons of UK, Morrocco or even Saudi Arabia. According to expert reports from South Africa the crescent moon will NOT be seen on Sunday 27 July 2014 anywhere in South Africa. Therefore, under all circumstances it is HIGHLY expected that EID UL FITR is on Tuesday 29 July 2014.
