Sunnis usually follow one opinion. Salafis and their splinter groups follow their own way, they have celeberated Eid in different days in the past. But last year incidentally salafis agreed with the sunnis regarding the sighting.

Regarding the moonsighting in Kerala for last year's Eid-ul-Fitr, the moon was also seen in Kinniya, a village near Trincomalee, in Sri Lanka, by roughly two dozen people including the Shafi Alim connected with the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama. The moon was also sighted in Puttalam, a village near Colombo. The ACJU refused to acknowledge these reports.

In UK we had some Darul-uloom students playing around and testified to sighting of the moon in front of Shaykhul-Hadeeth (Maulana) Yusuf Motala Saheb (HA) and Ramadhan was declared. There was paraded as a huge victory for negating calculations as "Ulama" cannot lie! Many of these Ulama have now grown up and one of them freely admits (now) that they were joking around and when they got summoned in front of Shaykhul-Hadeeth (Maulana) Yusuf Motala Saheb (HA) they froze and couldn't speak in front of Hazrat.

It was impossible to sight the moon that day in India or SriLanka that day (moon wasn't there to be sighted)

Btw I forgot to mention. In Kerala Ramadan started from Sunday 29th of June. Also in some districts in Karnataka which is near to Kerala.

Thiruvananthapuram/Mangalore: The devout Muslims in Kerala and part of Karnataka will for the next almost 30 days be indulged in prayers, fasting, charity and religious activity as the holy month of Ramadan began here early Sunday.

The supreme leader of the Indian Union Muslim League Pannakad Hyder Ali Shihab Thangal and other religious leaders addressed the masses about the importance of the month of Ramadan.

Muslims in Kerala constitute roughly 24 percent of the 3.3 crore population of the state.

Along with Kerala, Muslims in part of Karnataka including Bhatkal in Mangalore district and other districts in the western coast will also be fasting from Sunday.

The qazis of Bhatkal announced the onset of Ramadan shortly after Magrib prayers Saturday after reports of crescent moon sightings from Kerala poured in. Taraaweeh prayers were held in all masjids of Bhatkal with religious vigour.

As the new moon was sighted in different parts of the western coast, including Kasaragod, Kannur and Kozhikode (Calicut), the holy month of Ramadan fasting begins on Sunday, June 29, the qazi of DK Al Haj Twaka Ahmed Musliyar, Hassan qazi P M Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal and the Qazis of Chikmagalur and Udupi districts announced Saturday.

In other parts of India including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, the moon sighting committees announced that there were no moon sighting reports with them. Hence, they will be observing Monday, June 30 as the first day of Ramadan.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

It is the month of fasting, in which Muslims don't eat or drink anything from dawn until sunset.

Fasting is meant to teach the person patience and humility. Ramadan is a time to fast for the sake of God, to offer even more prayer than normal and ask forgiveness for the sins of the past and ask for guidance in the future.

Ramadan ends with Eid-ul-Fitr, and normally depending on the calendar it takes either 29 or 30 days.

Ma'din Academy in the Muslim dominated Kerala district of Malappuram, one of the growing educational institutions in the state, with more than 15000 students and 25 educational and charity ventures, welcomed Ramadan with a 25 item action plan to be implemented during the holy month.

The programme includes spiritual gatherings, educational and charity service activities, iftar meetings - breaking Ramadan's fast, online sessions. Besides, importance would be given to religious sessions.

Thats the Kerala Coast, so its possible to have a sighting as even though it was monsoon(rainy season) we didn't have any rain on that day and the skies were clear.
