Although Makruh is the correct opinion, I've had a go at this and call it HARAM. See smoking thread. We went on and on about it.

So brother Muadh what time will your train be? ;)

Alhumdolillah throughout the trip I had my SealSkinz socks on so as soon as I woke up near Fajar, I went to the Toilet (unfit for human consumption) and quickly did Wudhu as best I could and then waited for the train to stop somewhere. The best thing about SealSkinz is that you can travel in comfort (walk and run) for days without your feet getting chaffed or burned due to leather.

Somewhere near Colombo the train stopped so I jumped out of the train, checked Qiblah and prayed 2 Rakaat Sunnah and then jumped back on the train. I then stopped at the next station and prayed 2 Rakaat Fardh. Trusty PRG70T gives you direction and you quickly guestimate Qiblah and pray. I had no baggage and everything was on me so jumping trains and getting back was easy!

I now had no seat in the train and I didn't care and also had no idea how far Colombo was. It turned out that it wasn't too far and shortly after 06:30 arrived at Colombo station. As I have said previously that unlike (Pakistan) Sri Lanka still has a colonial charm to its buildings and stations and Railway station is no different. Sri Lanka is like a Hercule Poirot Novel with the same kind of buildings and happy, polite people everywhere.

I came out of the station and it was in the middle of town with hunderds of young children walking to School everywhere in the morning. I kept walking towards the Khan Tower as I had to get to that part of Pettah Market.

Pettah is a neighbourhood of Colombo with open air markets and Bazaar and one of the prominent areas has the Khan ClockTower which was built by a family of Bombay and it is easily visible and gives a way to orient oneself to the city.

There are loads of Hotels and Resturants around the Tower and again I found one where many Sunnah wearing men were eating so I also ate (Alhumdolillah). English in Colombo isn't a problem and everyone fluently speaks it.

After eating I walked aroud and found the famous Jamia Ul-Alfar Mosque which is just as magnificent today as it was when it was built in 1909.

I went inside the Masjid but was unable to pray due to a logistical issue which is discussed between me and others on SF with "now" Mufti Abu Hajira (HA) and Shaykh (Mufti) Hussain Kadodia (HA) :p

After visiting the Masjid, I didn't have enough time so I got myself a Rickshaw and hurried back to the Airport.

In summary, I didn't get a chance to experience much of Islam in Sri-Lanka as I wanted so the mission wasn't entirely a success!

All praise be to Allah (SWT).

I was on my way to a job when I stopped by London's most famous Masjid, Regents Park (Central London) to offer Salah.

I was in my small company van in the masjids car park ready to leave after Salah.

Then a man started walking towards me so I rolled the window down thinking he needs something.

Anyway, we did salaam to each other and before I could ask any questions, the brother said to me, "You are (and he mentioned my full mame)". I was surprised to say the least. So I asked him how he knew my name. Mr bright guy read my ID badge which I would hang up behind my seat and he saw that.

Anyway he asked me where I was from and what my name meant etc. MashaAllah he seemed like a nice felow.

I finally got to ask him his name and and where he was from. He told me he was from the south, so I assumed south India. He told me he stayed in Scotland them came down to London on business. And he finally introduced himself as Allah Rakha Rahman and he told me what it meant. He also gave a little explanation as to his conversion to Islam. MashaAllah very pleased to hear about it (i can't remember the details, it was aprox 8 years ago) I had to leave and since he was a visitor to our country, I gave him my card with my name and number and told him if he ever needed anything, to give me a call.

Then I went home and mentioned him to the family who showed me a picture of this man and I recognized him immediately.

Turns out he is one of the world's most famous musicians (Music Composer, Astagfirullah) A.R. Rahman. And there I was asking him if he needed anything, to give me a call.

Whatever his profession, he was a very calm, down to earth person not bragging at all about who he was or anything. Just had a simple chat and that's it.

masha'allah.
I never thought about the fiqhi aspect of those water "pools". if I wasn't too grossed out, I'd just use them.
this what they usually look like iirc:

but i'd usually roam around the masjid until I found a lone tap. most masajid had at least one outside somewhere.

You're not supposed to let the water falling from your limbs back into the pool. There are little bowls floating in the pool. You use them or your cupped hands to pour the water over your limbs and make sure that water falls outside. As you can see from the photo, there are thin, deep, spaces right outside the pool. The water falls into there and flows out. Of course, it's not perfect and some water will fall back into there. As well, dirt and insects will land in there too.

What about the aspect of maa mustamal water falling into the pond? That could be a problem for Hanafi's....

By the way, great thread.

السلام عليكم

We have Hawl(pools) in most of the Mosques here in South India, but there ll be taps for wudu too. Usually there are 2 hawls, a smaller hawl to wash the feet just before entering the Mosque.

I usually use the tap to make wudu, its difficult for me to take wudu in the hawl as I splash a lot.

In Bangladesh there are lot of Masajid having pools (with fish and algae, yet clean and hygienic) for making wudhu. Almost in every big Darul Uloom there are both- pools and taps. When I go any of such Masjid, I make wudhu in the pool instead of tap. Because water isn't wasted plus greenish water and swimming of fishes bring a "natural" sensation.

Brother, clean water is supplied whenever water level reaches lower. Before every Salah you'll find pools full to the brim. So water remains always clean.

salaam

this has confused me now.

when i was in jamaat in india/pak, we came across many of these hawz (spelling?) for the first time in our life. i always thought they were legit as everyone was using them to do wudhu.

i got a shock once when a turtle surfaced as i was doing wudhu, took one look at me and went back down!

wa Alaikum Assalam w.w.

Ha ha.. i used to spend a lot of time making wudhu when small.. reason.. watching fishes n turtles :-)

I still do love to watch them.. but the new air conditioned Masajids do not have these Haudhs (ponds) (mostly)..

"i got a shock once when a turtle surfaced as i was doing wudhu, took one look at me and went back down!"

Probably a Barelvi Turtle.. saying.." so u guys reached my pond..be careful.."

Shaikh Muadh, so you didn't really see hadrath Adam alaihiss salaam's footprints? After all the trouble, you should have had just exercised a little more patience and gone for it..this is an anti-climax.

This thread has got me interested, InshaAllah second half of 2014 I'm planning to visit Sri Lanka, anyone game for it, let me know - to visit senior ulamah's and mashaiikh and mount Adam or whatever that's called. It will be a short quick but maximum sojourn, sleeping less, eating less but maximum traveling and your baggage travels with you.
