Asslamo Allaikum Wa Rahmatullahi,

This applied to me FIRST except that I don’t even know anything so at least they have a head start on me.

I am very concerned and alarmed at the condition of the Ummah. I am seeing people who seem to know a lot and are satisfied that they are part of a group (e.g. Deobandees and others) and that they are with the Haqq.

These brothers and sisters know their stuff but their life seems to not reflect aspects of Sunnah and they are lax in controlling their Nafs and practising Islam fully.

We have websites, blogs, talks, youtube, facebok, twitter but Taqwa is missing and Taqwa is the one which drives people to follow Islam.

Is anyone else concerned? Are you witnessing similar things with people with a lot of knowledge but empty lives???

Brother aren't we always going to experience fluctuation in Taqwa, we are not angels, the biggest blessing is not being complacent with ones own condition, and recognizing the feelings of the fluctuations.

The biggest downfall is ignorance and obliviousness. Mubarak to you brother muadh the uneasiness you are feeling is a sign of Taqwa.

Allah give us strength to keep strong against our nafs....we can't always blame Shaytan and circumstances for our behaviour. We have to take responsibility for our actions and strive to correct them, yes easier said then done, but it's not impossible we are not little children that need molley coddling....I give this advice to myself first, and pray I can hold steadfast to it....humble duas requested for this sinful servant of Allah. Allahuallam.

Why not focus on our own actions, only Allah knows who is pious and who is not, names, status, rank in people should be irrelevant, I've learnt more about implementing knowledge gained from respected ulema from the average Joe blog, then from those who I've looked up to as role models.

الحمد لله

In my mind there are techniques of developing Taqwa as follows:

  1. Stay with people of Taqwa: This is indirect
  2. Read and ponder upon the Qur'aan: This is direct

What are some other ways?

Read Ihya UlumDin by Imam Ghazali rahimullah

It has covered a lot of things in detail.

The battle between men and iblees is an ongoing one and will not end till the day we breathe our very last. It's like a war sometimes one side inflicts more damage and sometimes the other, trick is hope/Tawakkul and to keep going by working on ourselves.

The problem starts when we leave ourselves and start looking at others and pointing out their faults and looking for loops, the Internet and other sources has been wonderful in helping to achieve this, that so much that you'll near hear people giving each other the benefit of the doubt.

The Revival of the Religions Sciences (Ihya Ulum al-Din) is widely regarded as one of the great work of Muslim spirituality, and has, for centuries, been the widely read work in the Muslim world.

It is divided into four parts each containing ten chapters.

The first part deals with knowledge and the requirements of faith-ritual purity, prayer, charity, fasting, pilgrimage, recitation of the Qur'an, etc.;

part two concentrates mostly on people and society-the manners relating to eating, marriage, earning a living, friendship, etc.;

parts three and four are dedicated to the inner life of the soul and discuss first the vices that people must overcome in themselves and then the virtues that they must strive to achieve.

A must read

In addition to the above.. it cannot be summarised better than the Qawl of Hazrat Ali رضي الله عنه that it is to pass through a narrow lane walled on the sides by thorns.. that we may walk without getting even our clothes bruised..

It begins with our Niyyat that we shall adopt Taqwa and save ourselves from sins throughout the walk of our lives in the above fashion..

Arif Billah Hazrat Maulana Hakeem Muhammed Akhtar sahab رحمة الله عليه has explained this beautifully in a bayan..the levels of Taqwa..
that of the commoners.. the khawas.. the Akhas ul khawas and that of Siddiqeen.. with dalael..

That commoners stay away from Haram.. the khawas keep away from Mashkook.. the Akhas ul Khawas repent even at the thought of sins.. and the hearts of siddiqeen are such that even thoughts of disobedience do not cross over..

May Allah سبحانه وتعالى give us all the Taqwa of siddiqeen..Ameen.

shall send u the link if i find إن شاء الله

wa Assalam..

How do we specifically develop Taqwa? What is it that we need to do?

To begin with observation of faraidh & sunnah and avoidance of Haram.. in all its shapes.. then go on walking up hill the path of Khawas.. Akhas ul Khawas and Siddiqeen.. it does not happen overnight.. takes a lot of pain & effort.. like a child who learns to walk.. he cannot turn initially.. then crawls..stands.. attempts to walk..stumbles.. falls.. again rises.. walks and runs eventually..

wa Assalam..

Reading the responses and the thread on SF and trying to make sense of all this...

Taqwa will come from acting on Sunnah and avoidance of Haram VERSUS in our times we think that Taqwa will come from knowledge and information and more Dhik'r and so on.

So we have taken a postive (action) and turned into an Academic exercise and where we do act we try to supplement with Nafil Adkhaar etc when the action is actually avoidance of sins.

Is this a good enough summary?
