Bear in mind that there are masaajid where women can and do get married without a wali. Even with efforts to put an end to such things, it may be that people who don't understand the difference, are really desperate, and/or corrupt will go to those places where even Muslim women are allowed to marry non-Muslim men and who knows what other types of marriages are 'blessed' in such places. We need to be better educated about all matters deen but with such a smorgasbord of options available to us (revert and born alike), I can imagine a number of us (naively, in ignorance) look for things that we perceive make practicing the deen easier.
